I am trying to remember when it was and what happened but wasn't there a 40 minute quarter at PP or OO at the time... I was there but need my memory jogged for details... Sure half you blokes were there...

He did that almost every week too which is what pissed me off. We were one man down every 2nd game because of his dodgy knee.

Yeah. He frustrated me more than any other Carlton player before or since.

Not too mention that he'd manage to make it on for the last 15 minutes of the game once we were down by 17 goals or so to kick two or three goals in dead time, thus making what would appear to be a valuable contribution.

BEST AND FAIREST MY ARSE!

Another one - final qtr v Ess, Rd 7 1995

Diesel & Sticks didn't play & we had the job ahead of us in a tight match. Adrian Gleeson stepped up with 2 marvellous final term goals to give us a 7 point win

Even though we lost the next 2 that day was a very important victory!

IIRC I was at the Essendon* game in 1975. I was laying on the coaches box roof, the old corrugated iron dug out on the boundary line.
Des Tuddenham was going off, I got a lesson in colourful language that day.
I remember the blew though, the place was electric.
I'm sure the St.Kilda game Jarusa refered to, we won by just over 100 points. It was pissing down rain for much of the game, making the score all the more impressive. We were sitting city side wing on the fence.
Hindsight says we should have had more success in the mid seventies. There were some great players wearing Navy Blue at the time.
Regards Pedro.

In terms of scores alone:

Best First Quarter
12.5, Round 9, 1982 vs South Melbourne, Princes Park

Best Second Quarter
14.1, Round 14, 1975 vs Essendon*, Windy Hill

Best Third Quarter
12.2, Round 3, 1986 vs St Kilda, Moorabin

Best Fourth Quarter
12.6, Round 2, 1969 vs Hawthorn, Princes Park
12.6, Round 19, 1976 vs St Kilda, Princes Park

I was at three of those matches, maybe four (can't remember if I was at the 86 game against StK). I wasn't at Windy Hill (*sniff*).

The Swans quarter was amazing. The game was just about over 20 minutes into that first quarter. I've often told people that it seemed like we won the 82 flag by only playing a quarter of the season - one brilliant quarter a game that blew the opposition away, including twice against Hawthorn in the finals.

One of my favourite 'quarters' from the 82 season was against Geelong, rnd 7 or 8 at PP. (It was a quarter in that it ran from about the 20 minute mark of the 3rd qtr through to about the same point of the 4th qtr.) All day Gee were a goal or two behind us, with Carlton looking like it was travelling just in 3rd gear. In the 3rd qtr Gee hit the front, at about the 20 minute mark. That prompted us to go into top gear, and we ending up winning by ten goals. I think we kicked the last ten goals of the match.

In the last 6 or 7 rounds of 1983 it seemed we staged a massive 3rd term fightback every week to charge toward the finals - one game against Haw when Johnno took over stands out…perhaps some of the older posters can help me out here for more info.

That third quarter is my single favourite quarter of football, with Wayne Johnston turning the game in just fifteen minutes.

We had to play great football week-in, week-out if we were to make the finals. This was due to a mid-season slump where we lost 5 out of six (or 6 out of seven), including a 100+ point loss to North, and had some other big losses.

The game against Haw was in the third last round of the season and if we lost we probably would've dropped out of the five. In the first half Hawthorn were killing us, and we were far from the side that had won three of the previous four premierships. Leigh Matthews was killing us and we hardly has a winner on the ground, though their kicking for goal was letting them down.

At the start of the third qtr Johnston went into the center and took over. He must've touched the ball 20 times for the quarter, and laid some great tackles, etc. He was everywhere. A five goal deficit at half-time had turned into a three goal lead at 3/4time. And this against the side that five games later were to hold up the premierhip cup.

Last quarter vs West Coast in Perth in 97. It should just be renamed the Silvagni quarter'. He ended up with 7 goals for the match & almost knocked himself out diving for a mark in the last quarter. I was there for that game & almost got belted after the game by some crazy Wet Toast (if I may borrow that phrase Bec) supporter. Great game & long, long night followed.

1st.Qtr. '72 GF; when everyone expected Richmond to win even 'tho we'd finished half a game clear on top of the ladder that year.

It was John Nicholl's first GF as Captain Coach, and he knew we had to come up with something special to beat them.

We had already drawn with Richmond in the Second Semi and lost the replay; but we beat St.Kilda in the Prelim. earning us the GF berth.

At the start of play we had made 8 major tactical changes to our side which bamboozled Richmond; not the least being Percy Jones as First Ruck and Nicholls stationed in the forward pocket.

We led by 3 goals at qtr. time and were never headed in the highest scoring GF of all time....Carlton 28.9 to Richmond 22.18.

I remember we happened to sit with Des Tuddenham on the day, and he said it was the greatest game he had ever seen.

It was that first qtr. that set it up; although we kicked 10 in the Second and 7 in the Third.

Gotta mention the star goal kickers! Jezza 7..Nicholls 6..Walls..6.... :-D

Pretty much any 3rd quarter in the period from 1979 to 1983, in particular at home Princes Park. We would allow the opposition to get a bit of a sniff, and at half time we would annoy the crap out of any opposition supporters in the vicinity by sitting back and "lighting a few cigars" and predicting a 10 goal third quarter - never wrong very often. (sigh).
