Wasn't a loss but the draw against Essendon* in '93. Kernahan brought the house down in the last 1/4 to get us level. Then he kicked that OOB.

I was completely shattered, and those f*cking Essendon* c*nts did a lap of honour, 'cos they managed to draw with THE MIGHTY CARLTON. And yeah CK, those Essendon* scumbags invented the bullshit kick around for the last minute. And mindlessly appealing for deliberate OOB.

Pricks.

the ones against Essendon* hurt a lot.

I am sure there was one against Essendon* about 93/94 (other than the one that we drew with Essendon* in first round of 93) where they got very helpful umpiring decisions and just won.

Melbourne have nearly always been painful to play against in finals. someone already mentioned that 88 game. there were some close losses to the hawks 86 /87 too.

Can't remember the year but the game was Carlton v West Coast with scores level with less than a minute to go. The ball was close to the boundary deep into the Eagles forward line and umpire Goldspink paid delibirate out of bounds against Hickmont. The Optus Oval crowd went ape droppings at the decision and the Eagles player slotted a point through just before the siren went.

I'm almost certain it was paid out on the full. Fullmont & I were sitting right in front of it & saw Hicky toe poke it over. What spins me out is how the umpire saw when Hicky pretty much had his back to the ump!

I saw it again on Fox a few days ago, I dunno if your memory is that clear of it, surely. I think Goldspink actually paid a throw, which was almost excusable as it was very close to a throw but was punched however, irrefutably

There was one where a deliberate was paid against 'Beaser' Aitken in the final minutes - early 90's. Resulted in a goal that cost us the game. Can't remember the opposition exactly....

vs Essendon* a few years back. SOS took a courageous mark on the last line of defence, when kicking back in from defence the ball shaved the back of the post and was picked up by an Essendon* player . I think we lost by a point that day...

*edit - to explain better*

That reminds me of the game against the scum when we were down and SOS had to play on quickly into a 100 mile an hour hurricane only to kick straight to Lucas.Who put it back over his head for the win!

Only slightly worse than Carlton getting pinged against Essendon* for not moving the ball on.Yet Barnes was allowed to put the ball on the ground in time on and lean on the fence to have a stretch!

About Round 20 against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium in 2000. Peter Burgoyne won the game for Port with just about the last kick of the game.
It wasn't the most heartbreaking of defeats however as we already had second position on the ladder sewn up.

What really hurt was the qualifying final loss to Melbourne a few weeks later when we dominated the first three quarters of the game but Melbourne came home with a wet sail. We should have been at least 8 goals up at 3/4 time in that match but poor goalkicking kept Melbourne in the game. "If only Kouta wasn't injured" I kept telling myself.

We won the final the next week against Brisbane however Silvagni badly injured his hamstring. As a result we had to play Essenscum in the prelim without Kouta and SOS.

You are probably right fev, I do have a shocking memory. We were sitting right in front of said incident I remember that much. In fact, we had this idiot sitting in front of us who said at the beginning of the game 'I hope you guys lose by a point'. We left very quietly that's for sure.

2003 Round 13 Vs Melb.
Watched the game last night on Fox Footy.

This was Angwin's 1st match and the day after Vin died.
Huge talks about Angwin and how he is going to be a great 10 year player and so on. Also alot of talk about J.Waite and how much guts it takes to be out on the ground.

We were up by 32pts just befor 3/4 time and lost by 7.

Just a painfull game to watch for so many reasons.

The year 1976 was definitely the flag that got away - we had a sensational year except for 2 heartbreaking losses against North Melbourne  . We did lose other games of course but these ones were exceptionally gut wrenching (and yes Maxyblue I dont admit that I cried after the PF loss :(

At that time we were known as "The Professionals" (a name coined by Lou Richards if I am not mistaken) for the clinical way we used to play and destroy the opposition.

Don't know whether you could put it down to our Coach Ian Thorogood who didn't "have" the players, but on paper the team ranks right up there.

Sure, go for it. I'm used to the Buzz using my ideas anyway

The Geelong v Carlton game was in June 2002, at CS/TD., Round 11. I think you should get the Club to ask Wiggins if he still thinks he touched it too.

Whenever talk turns to that game I cannot help thinking about Stephen Orally's lovely direct tapout to the running Port player to set up that goal

Another shocker I remember was Rd 1, 1990. We played the Swans at Optus & the blueblooded backslappers in the crowd were very happy with our 45 point half time lead. Then some short, fat, slow, annoying little shit called Greg Williams broke our hearts in the 2nd half

Absolutely...A stand-out for me.

I knew the goal umpire well, and a more di-hard Collingwood man you would not see.

Fans behind the goal are always a good guide and that day it was clear to all but the Goal umpire what was the result!
