Lappin's house of Blues plays joyful tune

Quote:
It was the first time in his career Lappin had led the team, and he was intent on bringing some joy back to the embattled Blues.

"We are not as talented as other teams across the park," Lappin said.

I hope that we start to remove this from the team psyche. Ok, it's probably true at the moment, but as we move forward over the next couple of years there is a danger it could be an excuse and hinder performance.

It's time for the club to start talking up the future, so negative thoughts don't become ingrained.

I honestly feel that we are as talented as a lot of teams on the park.

We are not as proven as some, but there certainly have been signs.

People keep throwing that phrase around as if we're pushing up duds who have shown absolutely nothing. That's just crap.

You can't put 'potential' into consideration when you are evaluating the 'talent' of our list because you never know how things will turn out.

We have a tendency to look at our players through rose coloured glasses. Some people still think Thornton is a minor champion

I certainly don't want us to 'over-achieve' this year. I don't think there would be much to look forward to if we were to keep bouncing from about 9th - 14th on the ladder for the next 25 years.

All I'm saying is that while we have the worst list in the competition, the gap between us and who is next is extremely exaggerated by the media. Also, our best 22 isn't uncompetitive at all. We're back to a little above 2002, injuries will destroy any promise out of the year, not that I expect us to make finals.

Carlton's experience proved the difference with Jarrad Waite, Brendan Fevola, Marc Murphy and Nick Stevens controlling the flow of play through the centre.

Are these journalists all there? When talking about our experience should they be using as an example a guy who hasn't played a senior game yet?

well done lapps ..

all you can do is beat the opposition .. and we did that . .

if we believe the media and last weeks loss was really so devasting and meant so much, then this win is just as important and we should give credit to the team ..

its going to be an interesting season .. could the lead up be any opposite to last year !

and kouta's knee is fanstastic by the way :-D
(tho it must feel left out without all the usual attention)

.. go blues ..

A lot of the time, deluding oneself into thinking that they are as good as the opposition can work miracles. Thinking this way as well as holding one's own against a "better" opponent can lead to great team confidence and then possibly onto arrogance, which when dealt with in the correct manner is invaluable!...

I mean to admit before a contest that one's team isn't as talented as the opposition's is simply allowing your oppenent to be "one up" on you before the whistle is even blown. (Unless of course you are Keven Sheedy playing mind games with the opposition...)

Have you ever heard Lleyton Hewitt admit to being inferior or less talented than his opponent. Hewitt certainly isn't the most skillful player out there, but he believes that he has every chance of beating any player on any given day by battling hard and wearing out his opponent.

Basically, you are what you think, and if the Carlton team were to remain focused in believing in themselves in that they will win games of footy, then achieving that will not be out of the question.

IMHO we are not ready to make the 8! Yes we have a young list with potential but most players i dont think are ready to match it with the Hirds and Buckleys.

Our kids arent physically not strong enough to be competitive .
Core strength takes a few years ... and we are loading the park with inexperienced kids and people expect them to make the eight???

Get real!!!!

Making the eight is not a priority this year.

Getting more games and experience into the kids is what its all about.
As time goes they will get bigger. stronger and understand their place on the ground and their duties...

On a side note:

'Lappin's House of Blues Plays Joyful Tune' just has to be the strangest headline I think I've ever read.

Yep, they've got to come out with some good ones before...

"Bronzed Aussies"
"Gold gold gold"
"It's GOLD"

etc...

A huge percentage of Australia's population...

That many people can't be wrong. :o

We don't have what it takes to challenge for the finals for at least another couple of years.

No people were responding to the thread as though someone has predicted finals - who did? No one - we're not that blind :P

And I agree, if we made it (IF) we would just make up the numbers. Eli final and out.

In principle - i agree where you are coming from...

but what if?

what if our middle tier players stepped up ..

what if no opposition player could contain Jarrad Waite and he plays like that hawthorn game more regularly?

what if we have limited injuries?

what if walker plays on the wing and burns the ground behind him?
ala a new gary crane.

Anything is possible in this game.

at the beginning of the 2002 season - about 10 of the top media commentators were tipping THE SWANS for the WOODEN SPOON!!!!

No one really knows what will happen. We are all monday experts...
but i live in hope. I know it is unlikely to occur - but one has to have hope.
