I think Bannister is the player Electric Blue referred to as being told he's not getting a game this year at all
If Bannister has been told (or looks like) he won't play senior footy, can't we work a deal with him, he retire, we pay him out , he go and play somewhere else (WAFL, SANFL etc) and we promote a rookie (ie Flint , Jackson etc).
Surely his payment isn't huge.
Barnsey, this is not possible.
To persuade the AFL to allow a rookie elevation, you have to demonstrate exceptional circumstances that justify this. And the bloke you need to convince is Adrian Anderson. Good luck trying to convince Anderson to let Carlton promote a rookie to replace a player who "retires" early in the season
The Capuano rule was brought in to stop a club delisting a player during a season. The AFLPA is very hot on that topic. Any deal of the "was he pushed or did he jump" variety would have the AFLPA all over it.
If a player does retire, you can't promote anyone to fill his position. You just play with one less on the senior list. Best example of this is Allan Jakovich who did retire but could not be replaced. Even Capuano was not replaced by a promoted rookie (although that is how it appeared, but Murray was promoted to fill a LTI spot that was already open). So too Ratten. Remember Croad stayed on our list in his 2nd year even though he didn't train for much of it.
As PJ says, we can nominate 1 rookie for senior selection at the moment without elevating him to the senior list. But I doubt if they are ready to nominate Flint over Smith or Jackson to fill that spot. And once you have nominated a player, you can't change the nomination to someone else.
