If you've ever been to the Melb Sports Medicine centre on Collins St you'll find that most of the Sports Medicine doctors in there are either current or former AFL team doctors. There are loads of AFL team photos/signed thank you jumpers, premiership photos etc from grateful players.
Personally I see Doc Larkins of TV fame there whenever I'm injured. They have some support there like podiatrists and physios but for imaging etc they send you off to the imaging centre in Prahran. Depending on your injury they also might send you off to any one of a number of surgeons around the place. I sat next to Glen Bowyer in the waiting room there a couple of seasons ago. How is this any different to the kind of pooled centre proposed? Johnny public like me pays for the rest of the doctor's BMW lease payments when there aren't enough AFL injuries to keep it on the road.
Obviously the Medicos already pool their resources together and the players just turn up at the clinics that they work at. If our guy was away then maybe we should consider either having a backup doctor or having our current guy nominate a stand in before he jumps on the plane. Any good Sports medical doctor would know of a couple of different imaging centres to get an MRI done at, surely.
Sounds to me like a c*ck up rather than a lack of facilities. Worst case couldnt somebody ring the doc's mobile and ask him who Waite should be seeing??? Whatever injury Waite had would be no different to that of scores of other weekend warriors across the burbs every weekend!!! Some guy somewhere else would have done a medial playing Basketball/soccer/rugby etc and would be out there looking for an MRI.
