what like the 7000 people who didn't sign up this year?

did you even read my post? go on, have a go, see if you can figure it out.

this might be a good place to start

we could organise with the AFL for a melbourne away game to be considered a home game for members much like the hawks had against us in round 4. so melborune based members dont loose out in any way, as instead of having to play freo at subi or port at ammi we just play them once and it's at in canberra with an extra half mill going in the coffers.

Melbourne members wouldn't lose out anyway, as we'd end up doing one less "away" interstate trip, so Melbourne members would end up being able to see the same amount of matches.

Raise this issue, and you'll always get the whingers coming out in far louder voice than supporters.

Now THAT's thinking!

And JohnM, while you raise some great points, Sydney is a closed shop, due to AFL idiocy when it comes to promoting the game up here.

Canberra is an established AFL town, so there would be an existing level of solid AFL, non-Swans support for matches.

Thirdly, if our club were ever to do this, why on earth would it choose Canberra? No offence to the good TCers who live there, but it's hardly one of Australia's growth hubs. Surely you'd choose either Queensland or Sydney - vibrant markets with genuine sponsorship opportunities, and more importantly, vital markets for the AFL to conquer.

Finally, if we moved any home games from Melbourne then that'd pretty much be the final nail in the coffin (for me at least) of the Carlton Football Club having a sense of place.

It may surprise many people to know this, but the Carlton Football Club has spent its whole life in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton. This matters a lot to a lot of supporters, and if we start prostituting ourselves to make a quick buck, then we'll be derided just like the poor old Kangaroos - who tried to turn their back on the North Melbourne Football Club and at last count are failing miserably: no new supporters/members, but plenty of disenfranchised existing members.

canberra as KK allready alluded to is already established as an AFL town, and you wouldn't have the swans or lions to compete with. although i think the gold coast would make an excelent area but i think is more suited to a 3-5 game a year commitment much like the hawks in launceston. serioulsy only selling 1 game wouldn't be that big a deal, as long as it doesn't increase the number of interstate games and melborune based members get one home games compensation (just like the hawks currently do).

effectivley instead of having to play freo twice (once at subi and once at the 7/8 empty MCG) you would play them once at interstate venue (such as canberra) and get into a melborune based away game free like richmond v carlton for example.

seriously, how is this a bad situation for anyone excpet maybe some perth based fans who will only see us play once over there instead of twice.

it's no different that playing a game in darwin like we did last season, expect this time we get the rewards as we are the home team. it's time to be proactive for a change or we will miss the boat again.

You're not going to see me shed any tears over this.

Sydney fans haven't had Carlton play up here since 2003.

Twice a year in Perth, every year. You guys have it good.

Canberra is growing - and rapidly.

It has always been a 'transition' town. Usually, the average Joe will spend two-three years in the public service up here, then move on. Wouldn't it then seem possible to bring new supporters into the mix?

How long has there been a bloody supporters club up here?

Good post. Spot on.

No Carlton home games outside Melbourne - EVER!!!!!

It's the first step to being 'relocateable'.

400 grand would be nice but this footy club can;t just bend over and do anything for a buck - even in our situation.

Sometimes you have to stick to your principles and be true to the history of this club. Every team that has sold home games gets derided for it.

NO WAY

Great idea having two Carlton games in NSW. Lets see...why don't we have one in Sydney and the other in Sydney. That's fair!!

Crusader,

Bluey95 has been the president of the Canberra Carlton Supporters club for around about four years that I know of. I have been a part of this group for that time, so to answer your question, the supporters club has existed for at least four years.

Its a good club to be a part of. We get together to watch games which fox show live at the Easlake Footy Club on a regular basis, and the facilities there are great, especially the extra large screen!!

If your interested, PM me and I can give you more information :)

the topic has nothing to do with relocation and if 1 game interstate against port or freo is going to giv us $500k. then thats one-fourteenth of our debt rubbed off. if we relocated than i wouldnt barrack for us anymore either but when there are gutless people who do not sign up then it costs the club and this would be a good way to stop us from having to relocate because we'll be more financially stable

As long as members get entry to an away game as compensation as Hawthorn & St Kilda members do I can't see why it shouldn't be looked at.

Having lived nearly all over Australia I can tell you Carlton is one of the most, if not the most heavily supported club outside of its home base. Given the current financial situation surely the club should look at taking advantage of this.

Another option perhaps a little from left field, is to play 1 or 2 games in Hobart. Hobart people are furious that the State government only will support AFL in Launceston for its own political agenda. Carlton has a very strong following in the area and there is allready a venue that at the very least is equivalant to Auroa stadium, and the siren works.

Just an to add to my previous post:

Although the Tas State government won't support AFL in Hobart I'm sure a deal could be done with local business, council & the AFL making moving any game worthwhile. An example of the support Carlton has in Hobart is the local Grand Final in 1999. During the last quater for no apparant reason a roar went up all around the ground. It just so happened that everybody was listening to a certain AFL game on the radio. I don't think I need to elaborate on the rest.

Why the hell not?!

It's a damn-sight closer to Melbourne, making it easier for us lot to see more games .. but you watch the AFL schedule all their games for fkkn Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth .. (go for it Aggro!)

And we wouldn't have to change the logo: Canberra Football Club still works
