After the great success of the bios for Bortolotto and Matthews, I'd like to open the floor on different days (until I go back to work) for everyone's memory to work on certain players to give some colour to their very limited bios in the BZM.

Lets start with STEVE DA RUI, SCOTT HOWELL and SIMON VERBEEK

Steve Da Rui kept Ablett to 4 goals one day at PP in 1990

I loved the way Steve DaRui went about his footy.
Tough, mean and he absolutely loved cleaning blokes up.
From memory he took Tony Francis out one day with a fair bump. Knocked him senseless.

What we could do with a player like him now.
He worked at NQX with Jason Dunstall and a couple of other footballers for a little while after Carlton delisted him.

Simon is a born and bred St Arnaud boy who was drafted by the Tigers (we were in the zone) and played a few games with them before getting his career on track and playing with the mighty blues.

He's a top guy and after he was de-listed I met him in the crowd on the terraces a few times just enjoying the Blues going around.

I haven't seen him for years now - I think the family moved to Bendigo after the death of his father.

I remember interviewing him for a piece on St Arnaud footy players in the AFL in about 1990.

I might be able to dig that out from the archives.

Steve Da Rui took out Greg Healy with a massive hip and shoulder in 1989.

Scott Howell is a fantastic trivia question... he's a member of the only Grandfather/Father/son trio to have played in a premiership.

Simon Verbeek played for Oakleigh before being picked up by Carlton. He lined up at CHF with the mighty Rino Pretto at full forward.

Simon Verbeek (article published North Central News 23 January 1991)

"Strong marking and kicking Carlton half forward Simon Verbeek feels in good physical shape for an arduous pre-season training schedule with new coach, David Parkin, since completing a strict training routine of his own beginning whilst strains of ‘Good ol Collingwood forever’ could be still heard reverberating in the streets around Victoria Park.

Simon, 23, in the final year of a two year contract with the Blues, has been concentrating on running work not only to maintain his endurance but with a particular emphasis on starting sprints to boost his acknowledged slow take-offs.

After seeing Carlton through three coaches in only two seasons, Simon believes that his combined physical and mental preparation will see him through the forthcoming season without suffering the concentration lapse that last year saw him playing a few games in the reserves.

Carlton’s Foster’s Cup team play Fitzroy in Tasmania in early February and Simon is looking forward to berth in his first night series as prelude to a successful AFL season."

Was it Tony Francis or Tony Shaw? I seem to remember thinking he'd cleaned up 3 opposing captains, Shaw, Healy and the other was Michael Tuck.

Steve Da Rui did indeed clean up Greg Healy, important to note that it was Healy's 150th game at the time - tough luck 'sugar'. He also used to have a great rivalry with D Milane, used to at each other like a couple of pit bulls.
Simon Verbeek had great poise, similar player to Matt Clape from memory - more of a supporting type role. Still involved with Oakleigh Chargers I believe? Thought he might have recommended Thornton to Carlton but don't quote me on that.
All I can remember about Howell was that his nickname was Chooka and he was crap - number 40 I think?

I was an impressionable 15 yr old sitting at the Hawthorn rooms race that day at pp. They dragged Healy off on a stretcher and walked him straight in front of me - I can confirm he was completely in lala land.

Scott Howell's Dad was Nicknamed "CHOOKA".....in fact Scott Howell's nickname around the Club was "Scott Towel".....I'll look up more when I get home about him....I'm pretty sure he played Full Back in at least part of the '81 Flag win.

That's right. Peter Moore was playing full forward as he had a suspect hammy and Scotty's job was to run Moore up the ground to fully test his hamstring. From memory he did a good job on the day.

I remember a game against collingwood in 1991 at VFL Park. DaRui wasn't getting in Milane path that day. Then again how could you blame him

Steve DaRui worked for one of TNT's transport companys, attended a conference with him.

Scott Howell wore guernsey No.40....D.O.B. 10-05-1958.

196cm and 85.5kg; first joined Carlton in 1976; first Senior game 1980.

Played 39 games and kicked 12 goals; playing generally in the ruck.

Club nickname...."Scott Towel"; Occupation (in 1981) Bank Officer.

Previous Club: East Sandringham.....Marital Status (in 1981) Single.

Played a great negating role in the '81 Flag side playing at Fullback on Peter Moore who played at Full Forward that day.

He contained Moore to just 5 kicks and 1 goal from 4 marks..(Howell took 3 marks himself)

His Father and Grandfather both played in Premierships as well; and were both nicknamed "CHOOKA"; although Jack (Senior) played for South in their 1918 Flag win; and Jack (Junior) with Carlton in our 1947 Flag win.

Scott could never cement a spot in the side.

He was generally only bought into the side to fulfil a role.

In those days Essendon* had the wood on us and it was felt that their 'plethora' of talls (Simon Madden, Merrett, Crow, Van Der Haar et al) would always stretch our defensive options, we used to always bring Howell in to try and match up on these talls.

It rarely worked.
