Have we interviewed all available assistants?

If this happens, then great. But I hope no dodgy back room deal has been done to make him coach. Not yet anyway. :P

yeah your right, why would we want one of the best defenders to play the game as an assistant coach, it would get in the way with tanking.

Positive PR!

But he cant play full back anymore... and why would he be that good that opur defence will pick up???

He wants the job if he is coach inside 2 years...

He has less coaching experience than Mitchell.. even if he is a bigger name..

Sticks is involved with the club and he was a legend CHF too.. so what???

I hope he is a MUCH better assistant coach than he is specialist commentator.

Dining out on your 3/4 time speech during the 1999 Preliminary Final is no basis or Curriculum Vitae for an assistant coaching position.

Well, I'd rather SOS helping out than Tony Elshaugh.

That's my concern too. Sure, SOS could bring some great aspects to the club in an assistant's role. But let's hope at this stage it's nothing more than an assistant's role. No promises. No guarantees. Just do the job SOS and let your work do the rest.

I am not sure whether it is a good appointment or not but I have heard nothing but extremely good reports about SOS's coaching and impact on the bulldogs list, in particular the defensive group. Let's not get caught up in factional preferences when judging whether SOS has any value as an assistant coach...

As an assistant that is fine but with no guarantees as a future head coach yet

A good track record with Sydney and the Bulldogs suggests he's a good get.... come on Synners, smile and be happy about the club for a change!

I do think it's good news, however, you would hope that the club would be getting other things in order first..... like re-signing all our uncontracted youngsters.

Anyway, hopefully having SOS on board will help us to re-sign Thornton.

I hope it's true. After hearing Collingwood, Sydney and Western Bulldogs footballers speak first hand in glowing terms of SOS's expert coaching - it would be a great boon for the club.

Problem is...I haven't heard anything yet - so where has it come from - amazingly - if it occurs today as azzablue predicts, then the club might well have silenced its sneeky leaker!

Would be great to see young Jack at pre-season training. SOS could kick a ball 40 metres at age 12...no pressure Jack

A positive move at last. CFC icon, a great defender and should help to repair the gap of discontent if its as bad as some say.
Also why not give him an apprentaship with one of the best coaches in the business, smart move.
Ciao

Most TC posters have grievances with the board, mc and the coach. I'm not sure that whatever they do right would be praised by the same posters with grievances.

Any decisions made by any of the above, must be seen in a positive and negative light; put the grievances aside.

It seems to me that any decision made by the above is construed as inneffective, inept and suspicious...or it couldn't work because they're behind it (or they don't want it to work because it would work for them).

In politics always be weary of the sides people take and how their views may be biased and lacking balance; there's always an agenda.

Minus politicking, what are the positives and negatives in signing SOS to Carlton as an assistant (forgetting who is behind the signing)?

Negative: the only negative I'm reading is based on his lack of experience in the assistant's role, and basing his ability on what they see and hear as a TV commentator. The other inference (I've yet to hear with my own ears) is that his signing is conditional that he is coach after Pagan's 2 years is up (and that Lions manager Allan must be recruited).

If SOS signs and Allan is not part of the package, then this condition is probably bullshit and rumour, and as a result, I wouldn't be far off IMO suggesting that the other condition is bullshit too, until I hear it from a credible source.

Positives: Would be most welcome by our young defenders. May influence Thornton's decision to stay. Brings experience and new ideas to the mc panel. Will be adding value to our team instead of the Swans or Doggies (both valued his input). New face to associate with our revival. Media happy to talk to him more than they would with Pagan. Media friendly. Admired. Legend. Good PR. There may be no Bond or McKenna available to us (ie SOS may just be the best available or willing).

We have heaps of kids in need of development and I think SOS can add value there. We are not at a stage where we are competing for a flag, so there's no threat to that chance, and he may/will get into the ear of Pagan to change his game plan, and game day tactics (SOS has been herad to be critical of Pagan on Ten's coverage).

My verdict: the positives outweigh the negatives. There's no threat that he will cost us a flag and he will add value in the kids' development.

The point is to try and keep things in perspective by weighing up the positives and negatives. Keep a level head and keep emotion out of this (if possible). If you only see one side of the ledger then it's not balanced.
