Co-captains is a good idea for a couple of seasons. By then, we'll know which one of Murphy, Simpson, Walker, Kennedy, or the guy from Adelaide deserves the captain's mantle full-time.

It is pretty clear the three names mentioned at the moment - Fevola, Stevens, and Whitnall - leave a little to be desired. Let these guys play hot potato with it for a couple of seasons, and then we can give it to the youngster who demands it the most.

Fevola will not be a captain of the CFC in 2007. Nor should he be.

Whitnall's weakness as a captain is his off-field media persona, and that's not Stevens' strength either. So not sure that Whitnall and Stevens as co-captains works (and FWIS, while I prefer 1 captain, I'm not completely against the idea of co-captains over the next year or two, till the next generation are ready).

For me, it will be (and should be) Whitnall on his own.

I think Whitnall as captain with Lappin as vice captain.

No way Stevens should be mentioned as any sort of captaincy, vice or deputy. Its obvious to me that the bloke doesnt want to be at Carlton. He tries very hard but his on field body language at times leaves a lot to be desired. Fevola used to get bagged for his body language on-field, no one says anything about Stevens... he is a serial offender. He is a good player, but in my opinion he is no captain, nor should Fev be he is too inconsistent

Fev stayed off the grog and got a Coleman medal. Fev got back on the grog and got himself in trouble.

Stevens 'gets the best tagger every week' and is coming back from injury and a season of relatively poor form.

Do any of these guys demand that we make them captain through their performances both on and off the track? At this level, a captain should be so good that he demands the job. It is then an honour for the Club to bestow him with the outright captaincy. I don't want to have to worry about which Lance is going to show up this pre-season, or which Brendan is going to show up, or what mind-set Stevens is in at the moment. They all have limitations, and to present one or the other with the outright leadership simply denigrates this once great club and a squadron of leaders such as Big Nick, Fitzpatrick, Maclure, Kernahan, McKay, and Jezza - blokes who you know that it really meant something to them to be the outright captain, and blokes who had demanded their selection.

So I say that we hang tight for two years. Shuffle it between these guys. Hopefully they take a shared role as an honour, and keep themselves smart both on and off the ground. But in the end, they should only be keeping the seat warm - because in two years' time we should be in a position to annoint one of the next generation.

Agree, that's why splitting it in thirds is the best result and so not putting all our egss in one basket.

I think Lappin once said that coming back at his playing weight was something he should be expected to do, not something he needs to be congratulated for- especially if he wants to be captain.

why should we be having to worry about Lance's weight every summer? He's a professional after all. Who else are we worried about when they come back from holidays? Eddie maybe, and weren't there issues with Setevens last year too?

But are we worried about Bannister, Bryan, Wiggins, Teague, or McLaren? These are the usual whipping boys around here... and we never have to worry that they'll come back to training in anything other than tip-top shape. Yet here we are talking about the axe in 2007 for these blokes and the captaincy for the other one. Just sums up the depths which we've reached...

Giving it to any of Whitnall, Stevens or Fevola simply creates a headache a couple of years down the track when we want to take it away from them and give it to one of the young guys.

I'd give it to Wiggo. He's probably the best example you could hope for in everything other than straight out talent and that sort of example is something that's been sadly lacking at Carlton for a long time.

Give me a captain lacking in talent who gives his all week in week out over a super talented cheque collector who looks like he can't be [REDACTED] every time he runs out any day.
