We win?

now i know everyone thinks we are up for the flogging of a life time, at thats does seem highly probable. But the way this season has been going their have been more upsets than sure things.

Who expected the pies to beat them when they were at their lowest ebb for the season.

Momentum can be a very fickle thing, it was only two weeks latter that the pies smashed the Cats, and you wouldnt have dared pick that three week earlier.

Maybe the week off will slow some of the Eagles momentium, maybe they will under estimate us and we will come out firing.
They guys have had a week off to rest up and get over some niggles that have been plaguing a few of our cornerstones. We have nothing to loose with all the pressure and expectations of the opposition.

We did beat the very same team less than 4 months ago, sure it was in melbourne, but we did resist their bold chanellenge.

Last season we kicked on after the break once finals were out of the question, the guys played uninhibited by expectation, the same expectation that was bought upon at the start of this season, due to our convincing win over this weeks enemy.

Does anyone remember this little result?
Saturday 25 July 1998
Carlton Blues (29.11 185)
Western Bulldogs (15.15 105)
Optus Oval at 2:10 PM (AEST)

it wouldn't be hard to confuse which team was 16th and which team was 1st on the ladder before that game was played.

it can happen and it just might tomorrow, you never know.

Give em hell blues!

I knew we we in all sorts of trouble when Ron had about 12 kicks in the first qtr! Luckily in true Ron fashion, he sprayed most of them. Also the day of the 40 minute quarter (2nd). IIRC you guys had 18 on the board by half time. Incidentally, that was one of the coldest days I've ever had at the footy. There was still some fog around when the game started. Was about 8 degrees celcius from memory.

Winning is a long shot, but I would not be at all surprised if Carlton get within 4 goals of WC. They are cherry ripe for a let down and your ins are a lot stronger than your outs.

Sorry gezman, but I have to pull you up on that 1998 game. Leading into that match the dogs were 1st and we were sitting 14th. Close enough to last but not quite.
Sedat, it was a very cold day and that 2nd quarter that didn't want to end. Carlton kicked 9.2 to 6.3 in that quarter and it was simply breathtaking!

I was hanging off a balustrade at the Heatley Stand end, behind the left point post and will never forget the almighty roar when Bradley let fly with a massive 55m goal in the final seconds of that quarter and I had birds eye view of it right of the boot. I was cheering as soon as it had left Braddles boot!! Great memories.

If only that could happen this week... no, weagles by 138 pts!!!!

I do remember that, I only caught the end of the radio call, post match, and the first words I heard were "an absolute floggin at Optus Oval today, almost 80pts" ... and I thought oh crap, we were hammered!

But I was wrong!

Great post gez. 8)

GO BLUES!!!

We probably won't win but what I want to see is Carlton play with desperation, determination and toughness and well you just never know. When a slaughter is widely predicted it rarely materialises and if we play hard with intensity and commitment we might just do OK.

It was so cold that day I thought I was at Waverley.

Dare I say it - Lance had a good game that day.

As for the game at hand unfortunately its going to be one of those games where you are happy to escape with a fifty point loss and no injuries.

come on people - the attitude is bullshit.

with confidence the battle is already won.

that is what we are supporters, the players, the match committee and everyone else associated with out club need to understand.

lets get on-board - get exicted so that coming home in the last quarter with 5 mins to go we are 4 goals up we can all say - i picked this and go out and get absoultly lambasted after the game.

Wasn't that the game where Lance kicked 9-10 goals? I sure remember being there if that was the match. It was the only game I saw all year being in Sydney and what a great time I had. I remember standing in the outer with another drunk blues supporter (who I had never met before). We were laughing and yelling and carrying on while surrounded by a sea of (silent) bulldog supporters who had been expecting a hiding, and they got one.

How sweet it was....

I'll never forget that game. A mate who worked for Ansett invited me into the box for the presidents lunch, which I naturally jumped at. I watched Jack smoke his way through the pre-match, then sat directly behind David Smorgon 2nd row from the glass. Boy was he shitty with me and my knees hitting his seat 29 times :P

Yeah it was one of my favourite games too, and I was sitting amongst a heap of Bulldogs supporters and their faces were priceless

Personally, I had much better Optus Oval memories from these games:

Round 2 1998: Dogs - 140, Blues - 84

Round 19 2000: Dogs - 75, Blues - 72 (snapping the 13 game winning streak)

haha - 27 frees to 9. That's the biggest disgrepancy I've seen in a match apart from that State of origin game at Football Park in 1997. I think the Vics got 5 frees for the game and SA got nearly 30. Still the mighty Vics got up.

Sedat, I thought you might have rather enjoyed the Blues fine one goal effort against the doggies in 91 (I think). Actually good for me to remember that too as it reminds me how terrible we were then and how it didn't take that long to recover. Maybe we won't be terrible for as long as I thought.

PS. Sedat, how come the doggies appear to have such silky skills now when last year they looked as bad as us. Who is the skills coach down there?

In a word, Rohde. Leon Cameron is our skills coach, so he has certainly raised the bar in that regard.

Remember that game in '91 well. Super McPherson was filthy for giving away that free to Arceri in the last minute.

There were also 2 really good contests at Optus Oval between the Blues and Dogs in 1999. We lost both by less than a kick, but they were both very good, honest tussles. The worst game between our sides was in 2003. You guys beat us by 7 points but it was a very shabby advertisment for football that day.
