Bullshit !!....we are a NOT a worse basket case than Fitzroy....SSSSHHHHH !!!....and I know you're taking the piss.
But just in case someone believes you, here's my two bobs worth...
Fitzroy were completely broke, and broken. Their president had to throw the money in to keep it going, were under merger threat 4 times over a 15 year period, attracting home crowds as low as 5000 to a game, and eventually they were gone...until the Brisbane Bears changed their name to the Brisbane Lions......T and I could go on....but they were gone.... don't get me wrong I trained with the lions and admired most of their players, even barracked for them against Essendon* in the finals.
We're still here, and we aint going anywhere. Trust me. It's on the field we need to improve and that will happen....even trash talking journos say it will take about 5 years for Carlton to experience onfield success again. So be it.
Then there's other clubs such as Melbourne Hawthorn and the Doggies who are in miles more poo than us in a lot of ways....merger threats, financial, membership, potential, history, supporter base, brand....
The current situation is the worst situation for Carlton since I barracked for them in 1968. There may have been difficult times prior I am not aware of, but the difficulties Carlton faced in the olden days, well Carlton overcame them.
Carlton will rise, just you better believe it. This club achieved record memberships since 2002 when we hit rock bottom...says a lot of the fabric this club is made of.
$7M debt...piss weak number in corporate terms, but that is a number we will trade through overtime. I'll let the financial people look after the finances, and if they don't we will kick them in the pants via TC; a very powerful tool, and incentive enough for them to perform.
On a final note, with reference to the basket case comments...If it Fitz Roy, that doesn't mean it Fitz Carlton. Don't believe the hype.
THE EMPIRE WILL STRIKE BACK!! and SSSHH and I will be drinking schooners shoulder to shoulder singing that great song...la ta ta ta taaaa
Bondi - You seem to have all the facts except for the TRUTH.
Fitzroy were disolved in a bygone era.
7Mill in Debt with a ground earning almost $0 is as you say
completely broke.
The REAL issue is that we missed several years of Drafting highlyand 8 years of drafting properly
The kids we have are no where near the grade and in days gone by players such as Davies Sporn Wiggins and Bannister wouldn't have been kept on lists they would have fallen into obscurity.
The kids we should get, we will share with everyone else as the free pick for finishing last is taken away.
Currently we are here and whilst I agree that we are here to stay, I am not sure that we will not be involved in the relocation / merge talk as all that has happened over the years with this is the AFL have looked at the bottom end of the ladder.
Over 5 years how many times are we going to finish above 12th?
Last year, 06, 07 ,08, 09.
Realists will see little improvement on field this year to last.
Should we show improvement will it be like the 04 - 05 season where we finished well at the end of the season having been below average all year. Win the practise shite and then fall away quickly.
So you might not see us in your rose coloured glasses as worse than Fitzroy but I ask you -
The AFL changed the rules to get teams up off the bottom and then changed the rules back to ensure that those at the bottom didn't try to stay there - short term.
There is no long term fix in place.
You talk about the doggies / Melb supporter base - Carlton Supporters are a fickle lot and are already finding other things to do for the next 4 years.
Who knows if they will return or if they'll have anything to return to. You like many others possibly laughed at St Kilda and their supporters.... Who's laughing now?
