From WC there entire defence is out of contract at the end of the year

Taken from the WA newspaper

West Coast have put the crucial re-signings of several uncontracted stars on hold after turning their focus to an all-out assault on the 2005 AFL premiership.

The Eagles' entire defence - including this week's 200-game hero Daniel Chick - come out of contract at the end of the season. But chief executive Trevor Nisbett said yesterday the club did not want to interrupt the team's stunning form with off-field negotiations.

West Coast have won a club record 13 of 14 matches so far this season, with their defence compiling a miserly record second only to Adelaide.

Chick, Darren Glass, Adam Hunter, David Wirrpunda, Drew Banfield, Brett Jones and Mark Nicoski are all chasing new deals with the Eagles, but Nisbett said the club would not risk flirting with their form.

"We've left a lot of our arrangements to the end of the season," Nisbett said.

James Bartel
Joel Corey
Steve Johnson
Paul Chapman

all from the Cats.

Chapman is by far the best player from that lot, but doubt if he is going to leave...

Very good defence but no monster KPP in that defence are there???

Just goes to illustrate.. if you have a defence that is competitive but a dominant midfield.. even a shithouse forward line functions ...

Just throwing up some uncontracted players around. From the talk on the forum you would think everybody is signed up.
The truth is a hell of a lot of players are not signed up beyond this year. Clubs are not going to advertise it.

I would take Johnson, Hunter, Wirripunda, Chapman, Bartel and Corey.

Bartel would suit our needs more than most of those names.

Willo is a WA boy.
It's either re-sign with the Hawks or head home.
Most likely the former.

Brad, im not expecting miracles.
Whoever we bring in wont turn the club around overnight.
We will still most likely finish bottom two next year.
Selwood would be odds on to come to us next year along with Hanson.
We lack experience in the senior stakes.
We lack polish...
bbut as we bring players in and others mature it will all click.

Next year we might still get belted.... but we will mature.
The year after we might start making real inroads ( not getting belted and being competitive winning games.. and those 60 point thrashings become 20 points ... percentage higher and win more games (not ugly wins)
The year after Walker/Betts 21.. Waite 24 .. Fisher and T Bird 23... etc..plus a few other young guns and help from uncontracted players... Fevola taking a more responsible possie at the club with maturity etc.. and we start knocking teams off...
The year after that were in with the important teams... and our players taking the steps ...were competing for a flag.. we mightnt get there but the window of opportunity is ajar...and its 10 oclock on the Malthouse premiership clock.
That would be the plan....

We just have to keep on accumulating young talent and experience to nurse them along till theyre ready.

Now I agree with everything you've written there.

The part we really disagreed on was the impact anyone we recruit is going to have, you're not expecting miracle's and either am I.

Am curious about who we're targetting though. Can you give us an idea the type of players? Maybe age bracket, position and style of play (In and under or downhill skiier). Don't need to tell us anything specific like club or size.

Brad were targetting alot of players but a player who might come through the psd would have to have BALLS.. and would come because he isnt the offered the kind of money at his current club that he deserves (salary cap restraints)..

I never said one draft where we come last would fix up ourt problems.. but it will go along way to fixing our troubles.

As time nears and those players are still not signing with their current club its easier to call them
I already made the mistake of hinting a player who we were targetting and he had given us an indication he might be available and then ended up signing with his club.

Te club needs to be proactive in targetting more than one player and is.

It wont be Kosi.. my info tells me the Saints have revised his contract.
Also a kid is not likely to leave because the pressure is immense.
Age bracket would be a player in his mid to late 20s .

Thats the age we need. Someone in that 25-27 age bracket. The kids are coming via the draft.

Don't need to mention names, for the very reason you got caught out on. We are targetting midfielders though right? Maybe KPP in defence

Just blokes who should generally take the bull by the horns and contribute to the club on the field as well as show kids what is required to be a good AFL footballer.
Somebody who should command some respect about the place.
Im pretty sure the club understands we need leadership and players who can set an example .
That kind of player would be on top of our target list.

I reckon over the next few weeks youll hear talk of a respected player or two from succesful clubs that wont be happy where they are.

Synbad do you get the impression the identities of these people are known or are you just saying that about this time of year such players will become known through the media?

Well im saying that there are individuals at good clubs that could lead this club that are getting paid sweet fupp all at their current clubs. (Like below 250k and there is no room to move) There probably nearing their last contracts if not their second last contracts and just need to get some renumeration at this stage of their careers.
Blokes that could make a difference and help make our players walk taller.

amazing what our players get paid compared to players from other clubs.

I have heard names.. my bet is on one name i have heard but havent heard it around the club so far 'this year' but we have chased him in the past but he was contracted. We just couldnt free up a pick to use for him.
this year he is out of contract and there is more than the $$$ reason he wants to change clubs.
His name has been filtering out around the place recently and the reasons he wants a change.
The club would have touched bases with him no worries .

Synbad I hope its no one too old. I think we have gone that path already and is the reason we are in this situation at the moment. We need to start picking up the best talent in the next few years and "grow" out own players.

I agree we need leadership, but you can get those qualities in 24-27 year old players and not have to go for the 29 and 30 year old players. I hope they dont target anyone older than 25 years old.

I dont want quick fixes.
