On BF there is a report on the Bullants B and F night, it mentions that the following players were thanked for their services as they will be leaving; Fisher, Tiller and Johnson. There was no mention of Austin or Anderson. Also it was reported that Ellard has been elevated onto the senior list.

Heard similar Kezza.

Out of curiosity, I know it's discussed in unofficial forums, but what are people's thoughts on the football club itself promoting that discussion.

This from Carlton Facebook (and similar on Twitter) ... List changes for 2011 will be finalised later this week. The question now is how many more changes do you think there will be? And of course who will not be at Carlton in 2011?

I'm all for moving with the times, but i don't agree that the club itself needs to promote the discussion amongst it's supporters. For example Monash University recently said in a press release it would be culling 300 employees by the end of this year...so would you deem it appropriate that on the Monash Uni Facebook page that they ask their followers who should be axed? Bill Smith in accounting needs to go - he is in his 50's and will be retiring anyway; Professor Singh gave me a credit when I clearly deserved a distinction...he is shit...let him go

Just examples of course, but similar stuff is appearing online as we speak. The club in the past has derided such forum talk on sites such as this one. Now, it seems to have joined in. Do they really understand social media, or is this very much still a work in progress?

IMO...it's not appropriate.

I agree. More respect for the players being cut is req esp from the club.
On these forums, you expect someone to say Player X is a hack or can't kick, but its not professional for it to appear on an official club page.
I suspect the person doing Twitter/Facebook isn't very senior/experienced.

The club by all means should use Twitter/Facebook to announce list changes etc, but to actively invite speculation is amateurish and disrespectful to the players.

Distinctly lacking in class, in my opinion. I'm all for the club embracing social media, but for the official club mouthpiece to invite such inherently negative discussion is completely inappropriate.

The comments on any given facebook update are generally lowest common denominator stuff. It's good the club is putting stuff there but the comments are an embarrassment and should be disabled.

For what it's worth there are photos of White and Cachia working with the rehab guy at Visy, which would suggest to me that Cachia will get another year, not surprising after losing Grigg and Hadley.

The counter argument to that is that his wife thinks he has more than perfected the double entry.

I am so sick of the Singh haters. You probably deserved the credit. If Singh was given time and allowed to settle down like some others in that faculty, he could've been anything.

Bill Smith won't be missed...... soft and unaccountable!!!

Ok...expected a few of those comments...but you get my point. Not sure the Carlton Football Club staff would feel all that comfortable if Liam decided to run a 'What members of CFC staff need to get the arse and just how many should be sacked?' campaign on the TC Twitter site.

Are you listening Mr.Coutts? Every message that goes out is attributable to you. You mightn't understand social media yet, but after more than a decade in the Communications Manager position, you'd think you'd have a better understanding of the Carlton Football Club.

Not good enough.

Was just about to write that perhaps if enough people tweeted that they think it's the comms department that should be axed, then they might get the message.

This is extremely distasteful and amateurish.

Thats nonsense - Smith has finished top ten in Leger balancing and tax reporting in 8 out of the last 10 financial years. He still has alot to offer the team and he should be kept around for a few more seasons and act as a mentor to the young graduates coming through the finance department. If he goes he'll get snapped up by Swinburne or LaTrobe and then the Monash will have egg on its face. Can you imagine how embarrassing it would be next year with a minute to go on June 30th and the new graduate is still under a ton of paperwork and meanwhile Bill Smith's team over at Swinburne are already having EOFY drinks and have rolled over to 2011/2012.
Also how do I explain to my son that he has to take his Smith posters off his wall.

Do your research. He was runner up in the Emmy Noether medal behind our captain.
Why do we continue to sponsor him at Talking Calculus if we're not going to support him?

Shame.

Love the Smith and Singh discussion. Exactly right.

Saw the twitter by the club. Thought the speculative part was pretty ordinary (in sporting parlance). Letting us know that the delistings will be tomorrow is fine. Validates the service as newsworthy. However, a comment talking about how people will be wanting to thank these players for their committment and how the hard it is for the club to have to cut good people from its list.

For a big organisation that relies on popular support, the club is dragging it's feet in the tech race. Average website run by *glup* Telstra. Very little mutlimedia. Best stuff is done outside CFC - the work done by Blueseum. The twitter site should have more stuff that shows the normal work involved in the club. Some tweets about training, meetings, "great meeting with the new assistants today. Going to be a great year for CFC!" etc.

In a club the size of this, have a couple more people (staff or players), write a weekly blog that only goes to the fansites. Eg, Mark Riley writes a blog for carltonsc, and Ellard writes one for here. (Or whoever). We are lucky to have Cazz, Doc, JK and Kenny Hunter on the inside, but a player writing about what goes on (without giving away trade secrets) would a) give him some media/PR practice, b) please supporters as they see the club is interested in them c) give the club a great opportunity to apply some spin.

The club also has to make the online benefits and component of membership more and more substantial if we are to compete. A look at the big clubs in other codes show a far more reaching and interesting site for members. The questions they are asking now should have been asked long ago, but at least they have been asked. Now we need to see how they use all their data. I don't know how tech-savvy Mr Coutts or the Comms Dept are, but on face value, I'm not particularily impressed. Hopefully by the start of next season, I will be.
