Kingsley always has one game a year where he kicks perfectly and is unstoppable. I'm glad he chose this years in the pre-season. Don't forget two years ago he kicked 8.0 against Essendon*

Thornton had 8 kicked on him. After the first 4 goalls they put Hartlett on him and Thornton switched back on him on the last quarter.Thornton had a shocker although there were a few goals not even Southby or sos could have stopped and there was no big body blocking the runs 50 out.Thats a concern that needs to be addressed. And Kingsley's 7th goal was from a shocking decision where Thornton beat him but the umpire deemed holdin on.

I hope umpire 17 doesnt officiate in any games for us because he was pure shit. Some of the contested freekicks are so iffy that players confidence in going for the ball in pack marks will be effected. One thing that doesnt change is the standard of umpiring. The last quarter was particularly flower awful.

I thought that for long periods we were the better side but as has been mentioned we just lacked any efficiency in front of goal or going into the forward-50. You knew we would lose the game because of our wastefulness and Geelong's superior efficiency but there were definitely some good signs. We had plenty of the footy and got it forward enough times but Scarlett was great for Geelong although we didn't put their defence under as much pressure as we could have. We need to sum up the options better when going forward as opposed to just blazing it long inside 50 and hoping for a pack mark or a crumbing goal. But still I think it's a game we could easily have won and were unlucky that Kingsley kicked 9.0 which he'll never do again. Apart from Kingsley's match and the last quarter though defensively we weren't too bad and actually worked pretty well as a defence when under pressure. Again though mistakes in the midfield proved costly.

Overall I just think it's a bit of a missed opportunity for us but I'm not too bothered. Was good to see Setanta, Murphy, Hartlett etc and although none starred, all showed some good signs. Who do we play next week?

I guess hope springs eternal where footy is concerned, and I was feeling optimistic before the game. We were bottom last year and there is no quick fix and I don't see any quantum leaps about to happen. Hoepfully we'll improve a bit at a time.

Who is our skills coach, we have a rucks coach, forwards coach, midfield coach, but who coaches skills, because whoever it is needs to be sacked. Hardly anyone in the side knows how to kick. Who amongst our players has quality disposal skills, not many, some are adequate, too many are poor. Walker is certainly a guy who could be a McLeod type, but his disposal is very poor for such a talented player.

I thought Setanta was terrific for a virtual first gamer, in a losing, ordinary side - 6 marks 12 possies, 5 shots on goal, good contests....kicking needs a bit of work, but none of his misses were anywhere near the gimmes Carazzo and Walks fluffed.

Livo was the big winner out of this game. Got to give him a go at FB. Whits can win the ball at CHB, but he's very exploitable.

Scotland looked disinterested as he did several times last year. He has talent, needs to use it much more often.

I thought Houla was woeful. Flings the ball away when in any danger of being tackled, no-one's idea of a tough midfielder. Back to the Half backline with him. AB was average, but when he gets the ball he takes the tackles, unless there's a genuine option.

Simmo is really promising and Murphy showed a bit.

de Luca has great mobility and terrible hands, he'd be great if he could handle the ball like Fish. But then he wouldn't be at Carlton. When you get a guy who has been overlooked in several drafts, probably lucky if he's as good as ADL

The second qtr was a shocker.

Look I was at the game. I thought our skills were pretty bad, but it is the pre-season. The glaring problems was our tackling. When kingsley kicked his 8th goal, it was pathetic, the Carlton players seemed to make a path for him to stroll in and kick the goal.

So many tackles missed last night. I could not believe it. I thought we really lacked intensity. I cannot believe we dont use Melbourne Storm as help in tackling.

I thought that we learned nothing over the pre-season. Unfortunately we are going to need to wait for our youngies to come through.

Backline is woeful also. When the ball went into our backline you knew instantly they were getting a goal. Seems to be all our players were all over the place, leaving a path in the centre for geelong to run the ball out uncontested.

Positives for me were Murphy, Setanta, Fisher and Blackwell. How comfortable did Blackwell look out there, quick hands, smart etc

We will get there eventually but it will be a long long year again. Disappointed with Scotland, Waite, Houlihan (Mr turnover king), Kouta. We need to to provide guidance to the youngsters.

A couple of my observations....

Setanta is great value..attacks the footy well and can take a mark...gives us some presence as well..
Jarrod Waite..doesnt do enough...could be the next Pavlich the way he has built himself up but needs to get more intense.

Andrew Walker....looks bigger and stronger and is one of our few runners...still has disposal problems though.

Kade Simpson...impressive...smart skills, good pace and has some brilliance about him..pity his bigger teammates couldnt look after him better when Milburn gave him some attention..

French/Mclaren....didnt do enough....Blake and Cam Mooney are novice ruckman but we ony shaded them instead of dominating...

Luke Blackwell...like his work...smart evasive skills and has good awareness...

Marc Murphy....attacks the footy really for a little bloke but like Andrew Walker his disposal dissapointed me...kicks floaters....however I like his confidence and poise and he knows what he is doing which is half the battle...

A bit of cred to Corey McGrath....did well enough to keep him on the back flank....

Lappin...our best player, class disposer of the ball and a real pro with his reading of the game....

Hartlett...tough gig down back but I like his style...smooth big man who isnt unco and I reckon he can make the grade....

Out of all the NAB games I have seen they have all been below H&A standards...

Walker has taught me to never be dissapointed in a high draft pick player...I saw Deledio kick heaps of floaters and also get run down from behind several times last year and yet he is allready superstar status....So Murph for me did bloody good. He dished it off by hand a couple of times with poinpoint accuracy and 0 hesitation...I liked it :-D

HEY PAF Were you happy with the great Irish's game? :-D

Lots of encouraging and positive signs for the Blues playing against the pre-season premiership favourites and, as the reigning wooden spooners against a team seriously tipped to have a chance at the flag this year, not a bad effort at all.

Well done to the boys for fighting all the way -- after last year, the money aside, winning these games are neither here nor there. We lost to the Cats in '04 as well, with O'hAilpin playing his first ever game for the Blues. '04 was a nice year, much better than '05, so I hope '06 is just as enjoyable.

Expanded benches, short quarters, umpires who can't bounce and screw up the "novelty" rules, plus we missed more than we normally would mean I'm not stressed at all.

Was an awesome night! Loved seeing the new guys and am looking forward to the new season.

Did you see the game,Geelong played crap, were rusty and we played poor also, unless that's us playing good.

Our backline looking like a disaster,Lappin was great,Whitnall ok,our midfield is a worry,Kouta getting old,Stevens the only class act,i'm worried already Simpson and Bentick will not get 20 possesion and more a game that i was hoping and may struggle,Scotland,Chambers play good sometimes in game some weeks, leaving Walker to only step up in the midfield as i doubt Russell,Blackwell or Murphy will star in 1 year of AFL and with Davies and Houlihan i guess we hoping, but already the guys on here dont like Houlihan game, but he does get a lot of possesion, but wasted it.

Sum it up,dont look too good, but at least we got one good thing when it can click, a pretty good forward line with Fevola fit and want's to play,
Fisher,Waite,Ohalipin,Betts,Deluca and throw in Kouta,Whitnall and Lappin up there, some goals can be scored.

Prez and Budzy, thanks a million. Budzy. I signed up to your torrent link in your signature, is it normal to take up to 9 hours to download a game, prez, is the link you were going to post any quicker????

For that matter, does anyone know if there is a quicker way and roughly how long should I expect it to take, I have no idea of these things.

Date of the game: 25 February.

Our season doesn't start until 2 April.

While there were some aspects of the game that were disappointing, overall we possibly should've won. Geelong are a good side and have been pounding us for a few seasons now, so there's a bit of perspective to be had here.

Murphy clearly has great talent, and I love the way Blackwell finds and uses the ball. Fisher is ready for his best year so far, and O'hAilpin has a presence in the forward line which few others can match.

A bottom four finish this year is probable, but I'm not making any firm judgements on individual players based on a game played in February.

Yeah, we're some way off the best in the league but it is far from being all gloom and doom!

The defence is a worry but I think there was enough positives in other areas to walk away relatively pleased that we will improve. Whilst Hoops still can't lay a tackle, I was pretty happy with his effort. He fluffed it a few times but he was getting his body in the contested plays and having a dip. This type of play doesn't come naturally to him so he will take time to learn. I like him in and around the guts because when he he gets he is one of very few (Stevo perhaps) that can hit a player on a lead! I look at his game as a positive

Thornton is a MASSIVE worry. He has really dropped off the pace. Barely AFL standard. The defence needs a good reconfig and with the addition of Saddo this will help, but I would prefer Livo in the last line as he is superior in the body on body. More a scragger.

Otherwise there is some hope. We still are unaccountable in the middle and allow too much space through the middle. Walker needs to be released from these negating roles. I wanna see him getting his own ball and making some play. Someone mentioned earlier that you don't use pick 2 for taggers and I like that analogy. Walker is better than that. I'd say his 1st game attests to that. Blackwell, Murphy, Carlos, Walks (in patches), Hartlett and Skinny all showed good form. Fev looked rusty but did a couple of nice things. Waite will be better for the run. Fish is fantastic. Most of these guys are kids and shows there is a future.

I don't think that Saturday's team is our best line-up. I think they will all be better for the run and almost prefer that we are in the practice game circuit to improve many areas without the added incentive of trying to win the NAB. Playing at PP is a huge bonus this week and with the Ants playing the curtain-raiser should be a great day to spend at PP. Looking forward to it

Ahem, this might be a bit hard to take, but I reckon our forward line would've been better with Longmuir providing an option as well. He's creative enough and experienced enough to pose a third string sort of option to fev or Setanta.

Waite looked ost for mine - probably match practice, but he seems to focus on tackling and chasing tail more than being creative and hurting the op with finding space and using his mobility. He's only a kid but he needs to play smarter.

I would like to see Livo at FB and Thornton at CHB - although he got carved up badly. I'd also prefer whitnall forward because we don't have a very smart structure down there at present and it needs direction from someone.
