Matthews did have 1 really good senior game - he went 3rd man up in the ruck a number of times and got the ball out each time. Can't remember who it was against, but it was out at Waverley.
He had a great leap but didn't have the body strength. His kicking was also not his strongest point, but adequate only. Had he been 3 inches taller he may have made it or a yard faster, but .....
He also had some relatives come done and play in the U19's(as he came up through the Unders himself).

Steve....I think you're talking about Adam Matthews, who we drafted in the '99 National Draft at pick 92 from the Murray Bushrangers.

He wore #38....D.O.B. 20-01-82; and was a 198cm and 88kg Ruckman from Corowa-Rutherglen U18; who was recruited hopefully to eventually fill Matthew Allan's spot in the side.

He got on the Senior List only to be delisted at the end of 2001; and placed on the Rookie list in 2002; when his season was badly disrupted by a shoulder injury; and only played a few Ressies games.

He was again delisted at the end of 2002, having played no Senior games.

No Warbs from his description I am pretty sure he is talking about Ashley Matthews circa 1989, Jezza was coach - Ashley played his one and only blinder for Carlton - thought he had heaps of potential, I think this game was against Fitzroy - which is why Fitzroy took him as well as Peter Sartori, we got Darren Kappler who we on traded to Sydney together with Simon Minton-Connell and a draft pick for Greg Williams.

Always thought Matthews was around the 186cm mark. He ended up playing a few games in the ruck for Fitzroy because of his big leap.
Was part of the 1991 clean out.

Agro-Agro-Agro.....my old mate! .....I've already discussed Ashley Matthews on Page 1.....I was telling beowulf who Ashley's relative may have been that came down to the Club in 1999.

Wasn't there something sinister about him???

Not that I can recall.

There were a few raps on this bloke after he completed a particular pre season and in one of the early practice games he had a horrific collision with Blake Campbell. It was the beginning of the end.

Added the details of the Williams deal to the profile:

Williams was aquired in 1992 when Carlton gave Simon Minton-Connell to Sydney, Peter Sartori and Ashley Mathews to Fitzory. Sydney also gained Darren Kappler from the Roys, and Fitzroy gained draft picks.

PS Not sure how you can be so cruel to liken any player to "Judas Hammill".

If it helps his nickname was 'Smash' - for some reason the name Paul McMaster is jogged in my memory of late, were they similar?

I think 'Smash' Matthew's good game may have been against Hawthorn at Waverley - Ang Chistou kicked 5 that day

Thanks (Mighty) Dukes

Well, it was suggested earlier in the file but I have no opinion on the matter. You could perhaps change it if there is a better likeness, or raise it in the Player Bio thread?

Smallish KP who pinch hit in the ruck sounds more like Rohan Welsh to me.

Warbs - Ashley Matthews had a younger brother who played U19's, was a Deacon squad member. There was also another Matthews from the same area who made it into the Deacon squad a little later, although I am not sure if there was a connection.

If there was a connection between Ashley and Adam Matthews, I didn't know it. I remember big Adam, he has rels at Sydney. He was also so incredibly injury prone that I don't think he ever wore the colours fully fit. He even had to share the ruckwork with Jeremy Dukes, as he had enough tape on him to keep Elastoplast in business.

Ashley was definitely a contempary to Paul McMaster.

That was 1993 and earned Ang a Rising Star nomination. Happened well after Matthews departed.

I agree that Matthews good game was against Fitzroy.

I can help out with this question:

1. Ashley Matthews played his best game against Hawthorn at Waverley in 1989. We lost the game 95 to 90, but we stormed home against what was a very strong Hawks. The fact that Matthews was in the team probably suggests we had a few injuries. There was another lesser light who played a part that day but I can't think who it was - it wasn't Rohan Welsh though.

2. No relation to Adam Mathews - different spelling. Adam is a cousin of Ben Mathews at the Swans.

3. The Ang Christou game was in 1993 against Hawthorn - he kicked 4 goals that day - it was at Waverley. Welsh was good that day.

4. Rohan Welsh had a day out as a ruckman running with Jim Stynes in 1992 vs Melb at Waverley. Stynes never had any rucking skills - he just ran into his opponent, so Welsh somehow managed to out run him. Welsh was a bit of a tragedy - breaking his leg on a footy trip in 1993 - never the same again. Had ability.

Hopefully I've covered off the questions raised in this thread.

Note that in 1989 we played Fitzroy once - fairly early in the season and won a high scoring game. He may have played a blinder against Fitzroy, but its the Hawthorn game I remember him taking some good marks and kicking a couple of goals as we stormed home.

Was this the game when Dunstall kicked his 100th which also gave them the lead? It was either then or 1992, can't remember.
Or may have been the game when Trevor Keogh was our runner and got into a tangle with Moron Brereton

Yes Molsey, that is the game. About all I remember is that it was cold and there was enough rain to make things slippery, which is why the marks Matthews took were all the more impressive.

Other things about the day:

1. I'm sure someone else who was a bit obscure like Matthews had a good day - but I can't recall who.

2. I would have aggressively questioned the objectivity of the umpire.

3. I would have said something insulting about Hawthorn

Given the number of games I've watched in my life the lack of clarity of my memory of these games is disappointing.
