Yes, everyone knew he wanted to introduce it, but that's not the same as actually raising and debating it before the electorate.

Short memories.

You are completely wrong about this.He went to the 96 election saying 'never ever' will there be a gst and then he went to the 98 election with a policy to introduce a GST and just got over the line notwithstanding they had less of the primary vote.It was introduced in 99.

i have no opinion on the matter of USA/australia relations in regards to the myriad of ppls who believe howard is bush's lap dog, but it just gets a little annoying with how far ppl take it.

a good analogy and one that has been trotted out time and time again is the comparison of world politics and world leaders to a schoolyard. in this schoolyard there is a fair bit of push and shove, its a western suburbs schoolyard. as we all know schoolyards are subject to heirachys. in this heirachy australia is no where near the top...however, our friends are. like with many relationships at school the use of the word 'friend' and the degree with which you judge and arrange your friendship with them differs from person to person. youve got your close friends, the ones you hang out with everyday. the ones you go to class with but dont usually play on the oval with. and the popular/bigger kids you should stay the right side of. America is that last kid. theyre the biggest kid in the yard, theyve got the most money to spend at the canteen and the biggest body...occasionally schoolyard scuffles break out. in these scuffles its always wise to make sure your aligned with the biggest kid in the yard cos when push comes to shove he'll clean house. you gotta choose your friends wisely, im not advocating war or anything like that...just, when ur a small kid in a big yard its important to know who the biggest is.

Well, the Baron Harkonnen, sorry Kim B, showed that he has no idea. The number of gaffs he makes is unprofessional in someone who would be a politician. No wonder we don't vote for the Floating Fat Man.

No.

He went to the 96 election saying "I'm not Paul Keating" said in the 96-98 Parliament "never ever", and promptly introduced it in 99/2000 after the 98 election.

It was never debated as an election issue. At all. Whether everyone knew he wanted to or not is another thing. It was never put before the electorate as an election issue and debated.

I'm happy to be proved wrong.

Mate you're flat out wrong. The GST was the central component of the Government's tax reform package which was their major policy at the 98 election. Howard confirmed that he would introduce a GST on 13 August 98 (press release below), and the election was in October. So you can argue that it wasn't debated for very long (although there was considerable lead-up debate before Howard finally confirmed it), but you can't say that he never took it to the electorate because he did.

This is a chonology of the entire GST debate in Australia:

Howard hates the working class, the unemployed, refugees, intellectuals, Muslims, and the environment.

Kim Beazley ridicules Carlton.

Beazley, you bastard!!!
