Blu944... couldn't have summarised it better myself. I agree with everything u said. Scotland or Lappin (if he hits form) are the most suited for this role. Scotland's skills on both sides are such a key to that role. Lappin, because of his unpredictability (for the opposition) and creativeness seem like our nest best option. JR down the track when he gets more confidence as well... he's great on both sides also. Walker is a star. I love how he runs so hard when he gets the ball... just like Simo. He needs so badly to improve his kicking though.

Getting nervous BW??? …you and your boy should be!! …we now have depth which means there’s less and less places to hide for some of our supposed ‘senior’ players …and that’s a good thing isn’t it????

Funny how a comment like that can get yet another personal and unnecessary response from a certain poster whose opinions are generally way off the mark (and I think I might know), though he was half right here:
Quote:
Ryan Houlihan - 25
Full credit to Houla for giving it his all this year. Has been tried in a number of different roles and shown enough for maybe another club to be interested in a trade. With this years deep draft the club need to make a courageous decision to trade for picks. TRADE

I guess he had high hopes then. Oh well. Off the mark yet again. Completely non sensical. Totally out of touch with reality. It's amazing how he always reaches the same conclusion, regardless of anything. He's obviously got it in for him and takes it out on me. Does he expect anyone to take him seriously? As someone said, if anyone wasn't happy with Houla in 2006 they'll never be happy. I guess that does mean we can expect plenty more bagging and negativity- regardless of what he does. Hopefully no more abuse and name calling.

But if he has hopes I'm going to waste my time talking to him he's going to be disappointed again. We don't want any more public squabbling, do we?

It would be nice at this time of the year if we could ALL get behind ALL the players who have been chosen to represent the CFC, whether some of us like it or not. And let's express our opinions without getting abusive or personal, either to each other or the players who have been chosen to represent the CFC. It would sure be nice to be able to express an opinion, maybe pass on some info without the same poster making a personal issue out of it. Merry Christmas!

Good post BW. Houla had a top year and I was very impressed to see him add the size he needed to compete as an inside player as well as an outside player. He's worked hard on his accountability and having "touch" on his opponents at stopages which has paid dividends. He should be commended for his improvement not bagged.

Having spoken to most of the players mentioned in the original thread,I can assure you, not one of the guys has any memory of having such a role specifically designated .

Scotland will always be an asset wherever he is played. A real true blue , for a player that started at the black and white.

Lappo had a terrible year last year and as much as I love him I think that he will only get worse.

Don't write Lappin off yet. He'll be back this year and will be playing great footy again. I guarantee it. Top 10 in our B&F again.

Not sure the 'sweeper' role should be designated. It's the type of role that a number of players could satisfy depending on the opposition and the extent of our injuries.

A player like Jake Edwards could play as the sweeper off the bench as an introduction to senior football. Jordan Russell definitely has the attributes, and, as others have stated, Laps is as clever as the come.

If we were fortunate enough to cover the defence addequately in 2007, I'd love to see Laps go back to the forward line and wreck some tandem havoc with Eddie.

Good call on Lappin going forward. He is great in the air (for his size) and also great on the ground. He would add some unpredictability and creativity to our forward line.

Sadly, I think that Scotland and Walker will fill this role for most of the year.
In one way, it would be good to see a young player such as JR given the opportunity, but i think that our lack of experience will make the club go for an experienced player like scotland most of the time.

He is a mature-bodied, skilful player - attributes that will come in very handy in an inexperienced backline when the pressure is on.

I think that JR lacks the self belief and composure to nail the role on a weekly basis.
Houla could do it, but will be needed elsewhere for his experience.
He will also need to take another step forward with the youth around the place now. (No, that's not Houla bashing, everyone will have to step up to another level).

I don't think that the club will use Gibbs there - he would be more valuable around half-forward to use his ball skills for goal scoring opportunities/creativity.

I'd love to see Scotland and Walker playing in the midfield week in, week out, but can't see it happening for 22 rounds.

I too would love to see Scotto in the middle. He won us the first Melbourne and Essendon* games last year when played there. I get the feeling that Heath considers himself as a midfielder as well.

Walks could be a devastating midfielder if his disposal just improved a tad. I'm sure it will. I have the utmost faith in him.

It would be very interesting to see whether players positions would change much under a new coaching regime. We may not have to wait long to find out.

It's interesting to see a lot of people still can't wait to see AW in the midfield, I personally prefer him as 3rd tall/CHB, his defensive intensity and courage at the contest are factors for me here. I'd love to know from DOA what Andrew himself thinks, is he still serving his 'apprenticeship' or does he see himself even working towards holding down a KP?

I always thought he would be key position but now have changed my mind. May just lack a few centimetres. He is such an athlete anyway he would be wasted there.

AW IMO will be a flanker type wingman...

If we play him as a 3rd defender, his talent would not be maximised...

He will turn into a very good wingman....

I think AW will be used more as a running type player, wherever that might be - HBF, midfield, sweeper.

I think that the thing that stops him from being used exclusively as a tall defender is his high-flying.
Great at times, but not necessarily a great thing in the backline unless you have the judgement of SOS.

Like others, I think his talent could be wasted as a backman.
