I guess my original point was that we all make our contribution in some way. A membership ought be a membership. I was actually responding to the regulat count diplayed on TC. I as hoping that all memberships be counted so that it contributes to a general feeling that people are getting behind the club. Recognising all levels of membership is one way of doing that.

It's not a club rule, it's an AFL rule.

To be counted as a member on the member tallies the membership must include entrance to a number of games. I think 5 is right.

This is to stop clubs having a $10 membership package to inflate their membership tallies. Membership tallies are important to the clubs not just for the direct money, but it's a measuring stick against the other clubs and can help with sponsorship etc. However, the $66 from a Blue member is still $66, and the club needs the money badly. And if you purchase a Blue member membership, you're still a member, just excluded from the official tallies to stop clubs artificially boosting numbers.

Yes I buy Blue memberships for the fence sitters and the non AFL supporter (who need a team like Carlton, but don't know it)...lots of them.

Why do I do it?

1. Converting people to support CARLTON

2. Put some extra money into CARLTON

3. Most importantly, to inflate our numbers after pt 1 and 2 have been achieved, to make CARLTON a more attractive club to SPONSORS. This, along with game attendances and FTA exposure attracts SPONSORS.

The club should be making these numbers public.

If we are not counting the Blue memberships in the official tally, then I'm only achieving 1 and 2...yes that's all good, but is there a better way to spend my dollars?

The only way I can see is to spend the same amount on Silver memberships.

I don't think it's fair that someone who spends $161 on an 11 game membership is counted when they actually save money on going to the footy and someone who gives a $66 donation for no return isn't.
I think these members should be recognized for their contribution.

Isn't that a lot like making a heartfelt donation to a charity, then telling everybody you know how much you just gave to what charity?

End point - the club is benefiting from your donation, which is why you do it.

I'm sure they appreciate it...

FWIW, bondi I agree that the number of blue memberships should be made available as a seperate count... *or at least for our curiosity* so unless someone beats me to it first, I'll bring it up with the club next week...

Living in China means that I get to no games and hence the Blue membership. I also was under the understanding that it "counted". Maybe it should be clearer in the membership information section of our website as to what the base level was to be included in the membership count. Does anyone know? Can I upgrade?

Taff, you should be able to upgrade. I was originally a Blue Member too, but in the lead up to the 2002 EGM I upgraded to Silver so that I could have voting rights. I've remained a Silver member ever since. It's only another $50 or so.

To the club's great credit, every time I have rung the membership dept they have been most helpful.

I've only been a blue member and found out last year that they don't count. It sucked when I found out because I always looked at the membership numbers during our lowest time and felt proud that I was one of them. Turned out I wasn't one. :(

Am upgrading the membership this year to the interstate anyway as I will be over there for round 3 I hope. :)

Does anyone know if the interstate membership gets you into the interstate game in your state or just 5 Melbourne games?

WABlue - it's only for 5 Carlton home games, so unless they move a home game, you'll have to dip in the pocket for the home state games.
The club tries to build in cheaper tickets to functions, and advance ticket purchases to accomodate us interstaters as part of that membership. (Although I'm going back to Silver this year because I can afford to....)

Thanks SB....yeah just for curiosity's sake (as a start). This database is a starting point to create more 'counted' memberships happen...a sort of captive group who can be encouraged to upgrade in some sort of membership campaign.

They obviously care, and like everyone they experience high and low financial circumstance, and you never know, but it's likely that upgrades will happen in their better financial times...if they are targeted and contacted.

I have had a Blue Membership since 2005....the stuff that you get is less every year for your dollar...but its not about that though...its at least giving money to the club....

If they woke up and did an interstate membership for people to see games inluded in their state ( ie : everywhere except Vic )...it would get me to buy an interstate membership.

I cant get to Melb to see a game ( spewing )...but at least this year the Blues play up here twice..Gabba and Carrara...

Now if I could get into those games ... I'd purchase one for me and the missus...

* And I think we should count as Blue Members *

An email was sent to me from the club over xmas...asking how we could give suggestions on how to improve memberships...
I replied : That they should have a PDF file on the CFC website that has all the members names and numbers (gold / silver / blue ...etc ) becuase I think it would encourage people to join....everyone likes to see their name in lights ..???

But i guess as a lowly Blue Member...it wasnt taken seriously ??

Id be interested if anyone else thinks this would be helpful ..???

how would this be helpful to Carlton footy club and other members, trueqldblue....

What are trying to suggest by putting membership names and numbers up?

are wanting a listing of members names with phone numbers for future members to contact?

or is just purely just a members name with there membership number

I know i wouldnt want my Name and number (if it was to be a phone number) to be placed up in pdf file for all to have access to....

if wanting to know my Member name and membership number how will this encourage others to join Carlton footy club...

just not sure what your really asking when it comes to members names and numbers on cfc website

cheers

I thought it, case in point, Hawthorn where people were signing up dogs and cats to boost membership numbers to give them marketing cred. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a membership is a membership no matter how small it is.

I've raised the entry of games to home state of non-Victorian members in the past and I think there are some AFL regulations that prevent this from happening. I agree though, it would be great.

Not really sure how seeing a list of members would generate more memberships.

I doubt that anyone at the club would term you as a "lowly" Blue Member. However, along with Silver Membership comes other responsibilities, which are not that great, but are there nonetheless. Silver Members, and above, are required to fork out $50 should the club be wound up. Also, I suspect linked in to that clause is the ability to hold voting rights once you are a "financial" member of the club. I'd say this has as much to do with the standard club membership regulations of Victoria as it does with any supposed introduction of different class structures.

As always, give the membership dept a call and share your concerns with them. I'd be very suprised if you weren't treated with anything but respect.

I've also been a Blue member since 2005. I've also supported the Blues through player sponsorships on TBV and now TC (third year running) and through donating time to the Blueseum project, although unfortunately that has been on the backburner for a while and will continue to be so in the immediate future.

In recognition of the job that Stephen and Mark are doing as directors, especially that they are continuing to engage with TC after being elected, this will be upgraded.

In regards to your other idea, I would think that there are significant privacy legislation issues to publishing a list of members and their membership levels (effectively publishing what they have paid). I would pull my support for any organisation instituting such a policy, as I am sure would many others.

Hey, just rang up the clubs membership hotline - first to get 2 membership forms for family members - but I also asked about the number of Carlton memberships and, more importantly, Blue Memberships we had...

As per the sticky membership counter we have around 18,300 members - when I asked in reference to the Blue Memberships I was told that they didn't have a current number... but when the season gets underway they do a census on memberships (breakdowns on each membership, costing whatnot) - and once that is done we can call up and get the numbers then...

...you wouldn't think they would have a running total, but still - give it a month or so and hopefully we will be able to get the figure and chuck it up on here *at the time I might suggest putting it on the Carlton website*... that said, we maybe able to get a number on Junior memberships and Interstates etc. as well!? :?:
