Priority picks?

Thanks for the wrap up Mark, sounds like a great day.

Are there plans afoot to bring in a regular mentoring program with the past players & the younger guys? I think Richmond are doing it.

Only one of the Captains guernseys was available for this event.
The entire day was a huge success with nearly all current players and an unbelievable array of ex champions participating.

It was a fantastic day for the Club. It was co-ordinated by Bob Lowrie and Geoff Southby. The support the past players gave to the concept was simply incredicle - Fitzy, Walls, P Brown, Marcou, Maclure, Parkin, Evans, Naley, Kourkomelous ( bad spelling) - I could go on. Over 35 PPs were involved and the whole senior list was in attendance. Past greats were matched with current players - Parkin went around with Murphy, Gibbs was going to play with Walls until he did his thumb.

The theme of the day was how the past players can play a more active role in helping our current guys through their careers and importantly instill the "Spirit of Carlton" into the Club.

At the dinner afterwards, Robert Walls and David Parkin spoke at different times about what the Club meant to them. Walls focused on how quickly things can turn once everyone is aligned. He also told the players that the PPs are there to help them and that a lot of them know what it is like to feel bad about the teams performance - that even though they have been finished a long time - that it kills them that the players have gone through such a bad trot.

Parko gave an absolute special - arms moving, veins pumping, about how the performance of our team will be determined by whether "you are willing to get hurt for your mate". Essentially the 1% ers. It was a great talk. I had Stevens, Gibbs and Thornton at my table and there is no question they were moved by the talk. Nick Stevens told me so later.

I am sure the "Spirit of Carlton" event will become annual. All the Past Player I spoke to were genuinely delighted to be there amongst their old mates and the current players. Mark Naley even flew over from Adelaide for the event.

Very Special Day

I know that the Past Players association has not been supported by the club as well as it probably should have been in the last few years and it has suffered as a consequence.

It would be great if the club could turn that around and again create a strong bond between the two organisations.

It is a very important part of the club and an asset that could be used by the club for mutual benefit of both parties.

Looks like that might be happening which is great news.

I think a mentoring program is a great idea. Richmond have implemented such a program. I will explore the possibilities.

And I was referring to Past Players although I do agree Priority Picks are pretty helpful too.

The Parko speech was a beauty.
He talked about the stages of development as a player and how you go from playing "with" the team to playing "for" the team.
Many of our players are at the initial stage at the moment due to their youth but Parko was letting them know that when the natural progession to selfless team football takes place, we will take great strides forward as a team.

I've heard Parko talk several times including recently at the AFL coaches conference but the spark comes back into his eyes when he's surrounded by people he's shared special times with.
He also donated a copy of the 500 game coaches book signed by Parko, Jeans, Sheedy and Barrassi. Wallsy donated a heap of stuff, as did Ken Hands who donated a fantastic Carlton cutlery set.

This will be a fantastic initiative going forward and it brings the magnificent history of the club back to the view of the current players.
It will be great for them to be surrounded by people who expected success and achieved it.
It would have been a great experience for Bentick to play with Rhys and Buckley.
Joey Anderson and Clint Benjamin joined the great Syd Jackson who can smack a mean ball whilst Murph played with Ratts.

Denis turned up for the dinner and whilst I've let it be known here that I dont rate him at all, I hope he can mould this team into a cohesive unit this year.
There is plenty of talent at his disposal and plenty of character as well. He just needs to take the right approach to fast track the development and we'll be on our way.
A great day for the blues.

Speaking of Carlton and golf...

About 6 years ago, I booked a game with a mate at Twin Waters Resort on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. The pro shop asked us if we would mind playing the round with a gentleman ready to tee off on his own. No worries and headed for the first tee.

I happened to be wearing my Carlton sports socks that day, which had the gentleman ask me about my support for the Blues.

I went on to tell him that for the previous few years, I had gone up to Twin Waters to watch the Jack Newton Celebrity Classic, in which players including Mark Maclure, Dipper, Brereton and Sam Newman took part.

The gentleman's name: Michael Young, Carlton Premiership player from 1979.

Winner of the game: Michael Young, Carlton Premiership player from 1979.

By a fair margin.

Despite not knowing too much about the man prior to the game ( I began supporting the Blues around '82), it was a thrill indeed to have played a round of golf with an ex Blue!

Thanks for the round Mick!

Michael Young: Games 37 Goals 12

He (Mr Swann) said the honour and pride associated with the club's traditional navy blue jumper was priceless.

That's what I'm talking about when I say there is a different feeling about the Blues this year.

It seems that everyone has got their real passion back for our mighty club.

Feels great. :-D
