In the VFL Prem final he hit the same bloke twice. This was so disappointing and JD is on his last chance at the club.I really hope he turns it around.I remember the last game against the pies in 2004 and he and Walker were fantastic that night and that in my view was the most disappointing aspect of our season this year that Davies hasnt kicked on.HFF is where I would play him.

Unfortunately from what I've seen, Davies problem is he's just not that good.

Davies is one the few players that I've really enjoyed watching over the last few years. Yeah, his kicking can be sloppy, but when given the opportunity and ground time he puts his body on the line and is fierce at the man and the footy. Couldn't say that about 90% of our list pre-2005. His stats compared to 'Time on Ground' would put an end to speculation that he his lazy on field (why is this stat not kept?).

I agree with what Synbad said about stuicking him in the middle. Or maybe give him the jobs Walker had this year (tagging). Make him work hard for it.

Couldn't agree more. Where he lacks in disposal he more than makes up for in aggression. Although I reckon he has more to offer, this is just about the perfect tagger recipie. Guarantee him 100 minutes every week and you'll see a better Justin Davies.

I reckon he'd get under the skin of a few players, ala Franga.

I think we just need to build his confidence ad self-belief. Once he has that we'll see some improvement.

Justin just needs to add consistancy to his game.

What is his role in an AFL side?

He doesnt win anywhere near enough ball to play inside midfield.
Doesnt have the pace or skills to play outside.
Is far too inconsistent with his kicking to play forward.
Lacks the pace, anticipation and ability to play back.

His hardness and tackling is a feature but can a player be retained for those features only.
Not on a good list.
They are the standards we must apply.

I'd prefer the spot go to a player with scope to improve.

Steven Baker would suggest yes?

Steven Baker does a stopping role for his team.
You are comparing a B&F winner in a finals team to a player who cant hold his spot in a wooden spoon side Knackers.
If Davies could do half the job Baker does, he'd be worth retaining.

Best role for Davies would be that of keeping a spot on the list warm until the super draft!!! How many chances do you get. How do you tell kids on the rookie list to keep battling their guts out for a chance when he has already had more chances to stitch things up than a Baghdad undertaker!!!

And he does it well, because he's got pace and terrific discipline, neither of which Davies has (unfortunately).

Not suggesting the two are one and the same.
Where would Steven Baker play if not for his hardness and tackling?
As to whether Davies could be half the stopper Baker is... I'd love to see him given that chance so that we could compare.

BV, I agree with your assessment and acknowledge that if he can't find a spot this year, he will be fortunate to survive.

Let's be honest - he was lucky to survive this year. Maybe another one of those who had a contract at the right time?

Anyway Bill, stiff sh*t, he has survived. lets hope he repays us next year with 15 + good games.

The proposition is quite simple for Justin. He needs to perform next season or he will be off the list.

If that is not enough justification for putting the extra effort and work on his deficiencies then its been nice knowing ya Juzzy.

I am beginning to doubt he has self-motivation to do it but I hope he can prove me wrong coz he has the ability to do those little magical things that can turn a game.
