How would this team (Round 1 2001) go up against the best 22 in 2006?

Rice Manton Massie
Beaumont Silvagni McKay
Camporeale Ratten Bradley
Lappin Whitnall Houlihan
Hotton Fevola Backwell
Allan Koutoufides Hulme
Freeborn Porter Fletcher Culpitt

They would win.

We beat both grandfinalists that year in both meetings. Brittain's 2001 mob would anihilate the current side.

Because Pagan's so crap right?

Nope that side was better. Our current side's potential lies with the youth and is 4 years off competing with the 2001 side.

Whilst I agree that the 2001 would be the better side, 4 years is an eternity in footy these days. The current side should be able to be more than competative against them well within 4 years.

I have taken the liberty of re-juggling Jars 2001 lineup into approximate positions they were playing (bit foggy on some of them) and matched our current squad against them like in a virtual game. I think it’s a fair comment to say that the best footy was behind a number of the 2001 team and the best footy is still in front of the 2006 team. Tough exercise this one. :?

B: Dean Rice......Stephen Silvagni......Glenn Manton
....Eddie Betts....Brendan Fevola........Adam Hartlett

HB: Andrew McKay....Simon Beaumont....Kris Massie
......Andrew Walker....Jarrad Waite.....Bradley Fisher

C: Ryan Houlihan....Anthony Koutoufides.....Scott Camporeale
....Ryan Houlihan.... Anthony Koutoufides.....Kade Simpson

HF: Simon Fletcher.........Lance Whitnall....Matthew Lappin
......Jason Saddington....Lance Whitnall....Matthew Lappin

F: Scott Freeborn........Brendan Fevola.......Darren Hulme
....Cory McGrath.......Bret Thornton.......Andrew Carrazzo

R: Matthew Allan.......Craig Bradley......Brett Ratten
....Barnaby French......Nick Stevens......Adam Bentick

INT: Brett Backwell....Mark Porter....Trent Hotton....Heath Culpitt
.......Marc Murphy....Dylan McLaren....Chris Bryan....Heath Scotland

Not a bad list of Players I have left out either wouldn’t you agree? 8)

Adrian De Luca
David Teague
Luke Livingston
Setanta O'hAilpin
Trent Sporn
Luke Blackwell
Jordan Russell
Josh Kennedy
Justin Davies

Well Done BrizzyBlue...

When I first came up with the 2001-2006 hypothetical, I thought of a few different concepts in trying to compare the two lists...You've captured a good one there Brizzy...Although the 2001 model wins on experience, I'm comfortable with the way our 2006 line-up is shaping...There is a good even mix of young talent with plenty of potential that I believe are about to unleash it big time!...

Denis I think has done a good job to date in building our list, and I believe this holds us in good stead in winning a few more games in the not too distant future...

I reckon that game would be closer than a lot of people would think. Not claiming a win for the 2006 version though.

Like Brizzy said a lot of those legendary names in that 2001 lineup were on the downward spiral. Just think 2001 form not career form.

What about Ratten, Bradley, McKay. Lance nad Campo were at the top of their game. This comparison is ridiculous. Make a comparison in 4 years when the young ones establish themselves. We got belted by teams last year who were only middle of the rung and some reckon we'd go close to our 01' side who beat the mighty Lions and Bomber sides who would have demolished any side last year.
Don't expect much in the next couple of years cause you are gonna be disappointed.

It's unfair to expect Murphy, Kennedy, Russell, Walker and Hartlett to be leading the revolution next year. These kids will be hitting their strides in a couple of years. Ball took a couple of years, Hodge a little longer, Waite only came on last year.

Hypothetical question for you all: Would Pontings Pillagers/Gillys Galavanters be a show against the Invincibles or Chapellis Crew?

Some people say that quality players would be good in any era. Others say the players of today are better because they have broken most of the records of yesteryear. Which is correct? Neither really, cause it is only hypothetical unless you got access to a time machine.

I called on my old mate Nostradamus to solve the above question and whilst he was pondering that question I asked him to compare the 2001 team to the 2006 version.

His answers actually surprised me:

"Brizzy, it is a plain as the nose on your face. The current team are full time pros, they are bigger, fitter, stronger, quicker and more skillful. Their reaction times are streets in front of the oldies. They have better facilities, dieticians, more specialist coaching, more video sessions, varied training routines and a good balance of youth middle tier and experience. The future indicates that they will win many more games than they lose. In fact I'd say they will be a champion team for many years to come. As far as that other game is concerned....well, who really gives a @#$%&! about cricket? Go Blues" 8)

..i agree, it's pointless pinning everything on untried youths.. ..there's been a truckload of potential champions that just didn't measure up.. ..let's not forget what we drafted livvo as.. ..frankly, i'd be happy if our 2006 team is as competitive as our 2004 lot, and we all know the number of champions we had in that lot..
