Yep sounds OK to me too, lets face it we gotta try something or someone new, we cant just keep plodding along setting new lower standards of mediocrity....and then failing to achieve them!!

Has this guy been reading TC?

These are the same issues many of us have hammered home the last few months.
I dont know Greg Lee but I like the way he thinks. The members, sponsors and corporates will stick fat if the message is consistent, concise and POSITIVE

Agree..he talks about the issues that we talk about...especially the business plan and how the debt keeps creeping up every AGM without proper explanation...sooner he gets in the better and the sooner he takes over as president the better.......
I dont know him either but he is saying all the right things I want to hear....

Looking forward to reading more on him when i receive this letter in the mail. I wouldn't vote for Lee based on that article? Tells me nothing about his plans just talking the talk like everyone else on the outside.

Thanks for the extra info Speedy, appreciated. 8)

Agree with BV, and as others have been saying, devise a clear and honest plan, promote it to the punters, be they potential members or potential sponsors, and they will come.

I'm pretty happy with this guy and what he has already done for Carlton, especially seeing how it was with the current administration. The last thing we want is internal friction :(

My only concern is what are his strong points in terms of being a leader for the club (ie. president) - is he marketing-savvy? Media-savvy? Profit-savvy?

Eddie McGuire is no profit whiz, but he certainly has marketing appeal due to his time spent wheeling and dealing with channel nine, clearly Kerry took him under his wing.

The media side of things are unquestioned, but there's no doubt in my mind Collingwood always had the financial support and fanaticism to push on as a club regardless of results, the results just broadened their market appeal.

That's the way we need to approach it - our problem can be fixed off-field without a huge output on-field. Results merely broaden the periphery. Then once we tap into the high-end of the market, we will boom. But let's not forget Collingwood were solid performers financially prior to 2002 and 2003.

We have a lot to learn from Eddie as far as what he brings to Collingwood's table, as this snippet from today's Crikey suggests:

"18. Eddie Everywhere's McDonald's conflict

By Stephen Mayne

As keen students of Eddie McGuire's vast conflicts of interest over the years, we couldn't help but notice the amazing Media Watch story on Monday night about Ronald McDonald gate-crashing a Hi-5 spot on Channel Nine's Mornings with Kerry-Anne.

We all know that Eddie has been the master of using his many media platforms to plug away and boost his empire over the years, but the latest sequence of events is the first example since he ascended to the Nine throne.

Eddie was announced as Nine's new CEO on 8 February but he's retained the Collingwood presidency, where he remains a rainmaker, if this snippet from The Age on February 27 is to be believed:

Collingwood and the fast-food giant (are) ready to sign off on an amazing three-year sponsorship deal that …will mean (Collingwood coach Mick) Malthouse's face bobs up on ‘Maccas' outlets all over the country. Sensing the talks between the two parties had stalled, (Eddie McGuire) slipped into the Lexus Centre to head up a crucial meeting and by the time he had left, an arrangement was in place...â€

I don't think that's a problem as per the quote below:

"Lee, 50, runs a national recruitment and labour hire business, Octopus Staffing and Recruitment, and is a board member of William Angliss Institute of TAFE.

He is regarded as a future club president"

William Angliss are a specialist hospitality, tourism and culinary arts centre.

Combine that with his staffing and recruitment business and he sounds like he's in the catering business to me.

This tells me nothing about his credentials in the role of club president, despite his idea with the heroes stand. What are his skills? How will they further the club? It sounds like he mainly excells at management.

EDIT: So I dig a little deeper...

Greg commenced his business career in the Marketing Department of Unilever in Melbourne. He followed this with a number of senior roles in major advertising agencies controlling the advertising for national branded goods companies, and rising to the role of General Manager at the age of 28.

The final year in Greg’s advertising career saw him work almost exclusively on recruitment campaigns for the RAAF. It was this experience that saw Greg decide to shift career focus from advertising to recruitment and HR. Greg founded Octopus Staffing and Recruitment on January 1, 1994 under the name of United Recruitment.

Greg holds a B.Sc. from Monash University, is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a member of the Australian Institute of Human Resources and a past committee member of the Victorian RCSA, MIMA, and Tourism Training Victoria. Greg also sits on the council of the William Angliss Institute of TAFE

So he has a monash science degree (meh), specialised in advertising until 94 (tick) and has spent the past 11 and a bit years running a recruitment and HR business (meh).

All the boards he has sat on relate to his last 12 years. Geoff Southby works with him at Octopus Recruiting - coincidentally Geoff has a science degree (from Melb Uni).

Discuss.

"Labour Hire" alone is one of the greatest rat races in business....ask any unionist....he won't be fazed by the runnings of a footy Club.
