so let me get this right, Tex on Murph probably won us the game but that was a mistake, we should have played him on a wing and let Murph kick 5 goals 'cos tex needs to be unleashed and we can afford to keep losing (falls in with the total clean out plan).

The best always start from down back...... Walks is learning every facit of the game and anyone can be an attacking player and run foward YOU GUYA HAVE NO IDEA accountable football, smarts, reading the play he has a lot to learn young walks and in a few years time you will see a champion Carlton player emerge

So Cazz, what was Murphy's possession tally? That's all I wanted to know.

G'day Guys

Been reading reports on this forum for some time now, so seeing that I was at Friday night's game thought I'd better register and reurn the favour. Bare with me as this is my 1st post.

Match Overall
The match overall was of a good standard which was remarked upon by a number of spectators bulldogs and blues fans alike. There were a number of skill errors but no more than you would expect at this time of year. We made a lot of decision making errors which kept the doggies in the game. Enough of the negatives as there were plenty of positives. Our tackling was great, which after last year was fantastic to see. Our forward line looked potent when ball kicked in well, backline competed well and we probably won the battle in the middle.

Here's a couple of individual player reports:

Lance Whitnall
I will probably get crucified by the anti-Lance brigade on this board, but he was superb. Consistently led his opponent to the ball, and when Chris Grant was moved forward gave him a good old fashioned towelling. Turned defence into attack with great use of the ball and showed composure when needed

Marc Murphy
He's the real deal. At the bottom of most packs, clean hands in tight and knows where to find the footy. Will not only play every game this year (barring injury) but will spend plenty of time in the guts.

Eddie Betts
Ignited the crowd with his 3 goal third quater. Caused defenders to panic with great chasing and pounced on any crumbs or fumbles. He was the highlight of the game

Got to agree with '72. Nick Stevens as always was the ultimate professional and played very well. Whits absolutely dominated Hahn and Rocket was forced to put Grant in the forward line. Although they were a bit inconsistent, honourable mentions to Waite and McGrath. Overall it was a good competitive workout. Its amazing how a little bit of confidence helps players find their targets rather than missing them by 10 metres.

My post was in no way a criticism of 1AW as he did the job that was asked of him. To answer your question yes I would prefer we lose a practice match in order to develop our players overall game. If 1AW's defensive skills needed serious work (as most of our midfielders do) I would be all for him performing shut down rolls in practice games. However I believe he has shown he can perform this role and therefore I would like to see him develop his attacking game, as from your reports he did in Alice Springs. Come season proper by all means use him as a tagger if it helps the team as I believe in trying to win every match.
That being said it is my opinion and I do not pretend to know more than a 2 time premiership coach.

Not sure what role he played in Alice 9only that he is recorded with 25 possies0 my point is after the 100 point drubbing (and the crap we copped because of it) Pagan and the boys went for wins (he stated this would be treated as a serious game, or some such) so we played Tex on their dangerous fast forward and he seems to have beaten him. isn't that a good thing? Or must we lose, complain and never do things that work?

Forgot about the whole dress rehearsal scenario, in which case 1AW was definitely the most equipped player to handle Robert Murphy which he displayed last night. However the match up was not my concern, my concern is that one of our most talented players is focussing primarily on spoiling tactics. That being said this is only an observation from 1 game.

Don't get me wrong I walked away from last nights game feeling very optimistic about all our young players 1AW included. When he did step out of his shell he pulled in a screamer that would make any highlight reel. There is plenty to be excited about.

Highlight for me was in the 3rd qtr,the ball was in dispute inside the Dogs forward 50,a direct confrontation between Nick Stevens and a Dogs player,Stevo did not beak stride or deviate 1mm,very heavy collision,Stevo won the ball, and a Carlton goal resulted.
For me Simmo was our best, and agree with everthing about Eddie, and our Murphy IS the real deal.

That happened right in front of the grandstand where I was sitting and I can tell you the impact was felt by all there. Just wondering DOA did you notice Eddie get straight up, take his kick and not even acknowledge he'd been hit after he copped an extremely hard knock to the head in the last quater. Note his kick found Stevens who nailed the match winning goal.

Great to hear the Blues doing well again.

AW will be a pearler.
There's no need for me to say anything else.
Like someone saying we are wasting him as a tagger 1,000,000 times, so that when he has finished his defensive apprentership (which will make him a better attaking player) and is sent on the attack and carves it up they can say i told you so.

Anyway...

We are coming along ok.

Welcome back again Bainuzz. :-D

Cheers BV, thought I'd pop in and see what you crazy kids are up to. Especially now the real thing is on our doorstep.

Apparently ABC Asia Pacific shows 5 games a weekend up here in China, that's gold. It will be nice to hear the end of the fake optimism and talk of who is the real deal and who isn't based on practice match form. Gimme the real games and the real season and lets pick those bones apart.

I was told a dozen or so but haven't actually seen the stats or the game.

All I know is that The Coaching staff were very, very happy with AW and the way his defensive game is coming along. Never fear, they will unleash him soon enough.

There is no doubt 1AW has got a great leap, and to hear that it stuck last night going up for a sceamer means that he went for it, felt it stick, will remember how it feels, will gain confidence going for his marks, and we will see a few spekkies stick from him this year.

A photo in The Australian and The Age of a Walker screamer is something I'm looking forward to this year.

Murphy had about 12 possessions and Walker 9. Walker Mark of the Year in the second quarter and Eddie Goal of the Year in the third. Also should have given Archie and Scotland honourable mentions although sometimes Scotland's decision making is questionable.

Has there been any photos or tape of Walker's screamer?
