I wonder why we get overly hung up on 1st round picks. Obviously "really" early picks tend to statistically prove their worth (with notable exceptions- ahem... Watts) but after that it is incredibly subjective. Consider Hawthorn's Preliminary Final team. Below are the top 5 possession winners from the prelim with their draft history.
1. Mitchell - 2001 Pick 36
2. Duryea - 2009 Pick 69
3. Gibson - 2005 Rookie elevation
4. Hill - 2011 Pick 33
5. Hodge 2001 - Pick 1
Other than Hodge, these guys were not considered any better than 2nd round when they were initially drafted. What this tells me is that our recruiters have misfired with tragic effect and our coaches, senior and assistant have been chronically inept in developing the talent we have. Worse still we have coughed up, Kennedy, Betts, Waite, Jacobs, Laidler, Robinson, Garlett and Grigg, who were not considered good enough for us or were booted out. And we will soon lose Henderson and Yarran. Other than the Kennedy trade that gave us Judd, all of these illustrates the point that both our recruiting and coaches have drastically under performed.
By all means get the best talent available but make sure they want to be at Carlton, they fit into the strategic plan and we FREAKING DEVELOP what we pick. Hopefully Bolton and SOS get it right, otherwise we are seriously screwed.
So a message to SOS...
1. Bring no-one in that is older than 23 - no matter how good they are - yes, even Dangerfield.
2. Pay no-one over 600k per season - see above
3. No contracts greater than a 3 year term
4. All contracts should be heavily weighted on performance
5. Pick local. If we have to choose between interstate talent and local, 9 times out of 10 pick local - I think I will spontaneously vomit if I hear that Cripps is homesick in the next year or two.
6. Exploit father son picks ONLY if we consider them worthy of a spot. That includes Jack Silvagni.
That'll do for now but its a long overdue rant I just had to have...
Peace Out...
