Barassi virtually banned the drop kick when he arrived at Carlton in '65.

Robbo and Syd Jackson were "excused" until such time they grubbed one in a game....they never did.

Jezza was not a long kick and never really mastered the torp or the drop kick and relied on the drop punt to kick 115 goals in 1970.

Robbo spent many hours teaching Jezza the art of drop kicking; but he never got the timing right, and his drops invariably went almost as high as long.....he seemed to "spoon' them.

Southby kicked torpedos I would say 95% of his time when kicking out.

I may be wrong but Robbo only used the drop kick to kick in, when he played in the backline.

Also Jezza started playing footy late, about 15 if i can recall, so he was not classicly skilled, he had his own style.

Ian Robertson was a centre line player (centre or wing) and I can never ever recall seeing him play in the backline.

The fullback always kicked in in those days....I never missed a game or a training session, and never saw Robbo kick out from fullback....not even at training; and why would he? he didn't play in defence.

Also....I wasn't criticising Jezza; just reminiscing.

Correct Warby!

I would suggest people look at the old tapes.. the drop kick , whilst glamorous lacked the %..

Gary Crane(as much as i loved him) for one was an ordinary kick at best and certainly no expert at kicking drops!

Jarusa has not been on line today.must be installing the Chrissie lights, but when he is on line next it would be good if we got some stats on the older players mentioned if any exist.

can remember Jackson shanking a drop kick while kicking for goal.

Think barass's ending of the drop kick wasn't in '65, more it progresse the game sped up.

See its funny i reckon how the drop kick is blamed yet how many shit kicks do we see today., shots at goal, shots kicking out, passes, etc. Less? More? the same?

This the drop kick has received a bad press but every week I see as many crap kicks as I ever saw as a kid.

Sorry, my mistake.
I thought when you said Robbo, you meant Robert Walls.

1. John Nicholls - before my time but ask my father who was the best Carlton player ever and he'll spit out his name before you've finished speaking.

2. Alex Jesaulenko

3. Bruce Doull

4. Greg Williams - best footballer I've seen

5. Stephen Kernahan - My favourite player of all time

6. Wayne Johnston

7. Craig Bradley

8. Geoff Southby

9. Stephen Silvagni

10. Robert Walls - Riewoldt minus the tears

1: Nick - not just what he did, but what he allowed his team to do. Nick made every player better amd hurt any opposition player, he was called Big Nick not for his size, but for his impact.

2: Jezza - Only Nick ahead of him because of the way Nick could influence a team.

3: Diesal - probably should be higher hell I can't displace those first two. 2 Brownlows, should have been 3.

4: Crosswell - for sheer brilliance this bloke is oft forgotten but jesus he could play.

5: Sticks - Great player, great captain.

6: Dominator - pound for pound, the best finals player I have seen in Navy Blue.

7: Doull - For him to be rated 7 shows just how great the champions of this club are.

8: Southby - until that fateful whack, Geoff Southby redefined this game. His anticipation, his run, his ability to shut down the best and then almost taunt them was amazing. he was whacked because that was how to win that final, by taking him out!

9: Walls - often overlooked when discussion about great CHF's take place, but he was easily one of the best.

10: Bradley - never beaten, always ran, as good a competitor as anyone who has played.

And there are probably ten more who could fit in and it would still be an amazing list.

Unbelievable, Danny. I couldn't have said it better myself. I agree with all 10 in pretty much that order (certainly the first 4). Not many people remember just how good both Crosswell and Walls were. Had they had Norm Smith medals back then, Crosswell might very well have won it in 1970 and Walls would've gone close in 1972.

Pound for pound, I reckon Crosswell had the most talent I've ever seen in a player, and I'll never forget the game at PP where we kicked the record score against Hawthorn, and Crosswell kicked 4 goals......IN ONE QUARTER.....FROM THE WING!!!!

I think I can too danny....but it was rare.

I did say "virtually" banned the drop in '65....my memories of Barassi when he first arrived at training was of constant shock after shock every night....old style Carlton training was a thing of the past.

We regular track watchers were abuzz "what's he changing now?"....it was an exciting time to be at Carlton.

Hey.....Mick Kennedy was a premiership player Sheik. Could you replace him with Iam Herman or Brett Sholl maybe?

Hey Sheik go easy on Rod Galt. I used to love watching him play (admitedly in the twos), and Peter Mac wanst too bad a bloke for a guy that played for the filth.

Yeah I know, I don't normally like to include premeirship players like this but he was just a player, as was Scholl. We got the wrong one from that family for sure.
