Just tell the other clubs its the million dollar fine + interest the AFL are giving back to us...

Quote:
Melbourne, the Kangaroos and the Western Bulldogs all receive at least $1 million annually from special distribution funds because they suffer demographically and historically when lined up against rivals.

And those guys didn't have bad management....

Geez, 10 years ago I never would have dreamed that the blues could sink into the hole that we're currently in. Those clubs that are making life tough for us must be pretty confident that they wont ever fall into a similar hole in the future!!! I guess you couldnt ever forsee a situation where St Kilda were Cr@p, had no members and lost heaps of $$$. That would be pure fantasy wouldnt it!!

Melbourne were, along with Collingwood, the biggest club in the VFL up till the 60s. Bad management meant they were a rabble in the 80s. How far back does the historical disadvantage apply to.

The AFL does a good job of bypassing their rules when it suits them eg Giving Freo the points against the Aints, Whacking Carlton in the 2002 draft even though trades had been made that made that unfair, (Richmond giving pick 4 to Kangas which became pick 2)

In 1968 , the year we won our 9th premiership , Fitzroy also had 8.

It doesnt take much to sink into the blackhole of nothingness if you cant get proactive and make the necessary changes in structure.

I tend to agree, it shouldn't be a hand-out, but a loan. We CAN get back to where we were as long as it doesn't take another 4 years of spoons. I'd say to the AFL and other clubs that we'll take the cash as a loan as long as we get our priority pick back and, say, an extra round 2 pick  .

The Blues are also struggling to cope with the costs involved with the upkeep of their home ground at Princes Park, which has to be maintained because it is still used by the AFL to host pre-season matches and under 18 matches.

The Blues believe it is unfair they are saddled with those costs for a ground from which they no longer derive any income by playing matches there.

The AFL however wants the ground maintained because it believes the ground - now known as MC Labour Park - best fits its need for a third back-up venue in Melbourne in case the MCG or Telstra Dome are ever unavailable for long periods.

This is the statement I'm most interested in.
This is the first time this barrow has been pushed by anyone outside Carlton.
Hopefully the AFL are throwing this bit of bait out to see what the response is.

I haven't read this whole thread yet, however, can somebody please tell me why we recive no income from the AFL scheduling pre-season and under 18 matches at OUR ground?

I know it wouldn't be anywhere near enough to cover the annual maintenance costs, but if it is true that we receive no income despite games being played at the ground, regardless of age level or status, then our management really are on the nose.

I'm looking forward to the AFL announcement post June 24.

The current board seem to be doing a good job. Well done to Smorgon and his team.

Quote from today's age, embedded in the ground redevelopment article:

Quote:
Demetriou said the AFL Commission would meet on June 24 to consider a separate financial rescue package for Carlton. "There's no doubt that we'll help Carlton … you should read into that (that) Carlton will be around for a long time to come," Demetriou said.
