I think our drafting has been reasonably successful in the recent years considering the penalties. The one that still kills me is 2000 - Livingstone (4) and Sporn (11) - when you look at the players still left in the draft and how useful they might have been....

Kerr, Kane Cornes, Shaun Burgoyne, Jamie Charman

Charman was a zone selection for Brisbane so he was off limits to every club bar Brisbane, but every selection in the 2000 draft was poor and that draft could have set up for the future if we had made the right choices. :(

Squandering so many chances in nearly every draft is the main reason why we're rock bottom.

The draft is a lottery... Sure you can identify talented youngsters and hope they make AFL players, but there are no sure bets. Just look at the top 10 list of any given year. There are very few examples where over 5 of them are considered champions. As people consitently point out there are always champions taken at later picks in the draft.

I have had a good look at the draft history and Carlton has not done too bad overall or I dare say not consitently worse than any other club.

I think we have traded unwisely and we could have done without the recycling of a few guys past there used by date, but overall I would say our selections in the draft have not been any worse than any other club given the selections we have.

The late 90s was where it all went pear shaped and Parkin has basically acknowledged that he got it wrong by not going for youth after the 95 Premiership. So while O'Sullivan was our recruiting man at that time, I think it is too simplistic to point the finger solely at him.
