Lance as captain means we'll have a lean year...

Still trying to work out if this was a piss take or not... :?

FEV is the only one who has said "I WANT THE CAPTAINCY, AND I WANT TO TAKE THE CARLTON FOOTBALL CLUB BACK TO THE TOP"

The other candidates have said "if the coach picks me to be captain, I will do it"

Who has had the leadership to demand the captaincy not only off the field, but on????? The Fev

the more i think about it, fev is the man. if this does come to fruition 1 of 2 things will happen.

1. (hopefully the one) fev takes on the captaincy and with the added responsibility lifts his game to a new level again, continuing the team oriented acts, and completely leaves his petulant past behind.

2. (hope not but possibility) fev takes the captaincy and with the added pressure of the mantle his game suffers extensively. with more and more scrutiny, if fev has one his 'episodes' the club and fev will be crucified by the media.

i guess my one concern is whether or not fev will be able to handle the added pressure. if fev having the captaincy was going to have a detrimental effect on his onfield perfromance then its best that we look elsewhere.

of course we could always opt for the junior footy option and rotate the captaincy each week. give the kid who tried really hard last week a go at being captain this week..... at least their mum's would be happy.

I was appalled to see the physical condition of Lance Whitnal and Nick Stevens today. There are 6 players in the AFL who aren't professional enough to keep themselves in a shape that befits their title as paid athletes, they are: Dean Rioli, Lance Whitnal, Jonathon Hay, Richard Cole, Stewart Dew and Nick Stevens. It is terrible that a third of those players are on our list; it is beyond reprehenisble that those two players are the front runners to take the group forward next year.

It should be no suprise that young players like Luke Blackwell and Eddie Betts return from Christmas break with unacceptable skin-folds when the those two leaders constantly present in sub-standard condition. I don't wanna hear about injuries or reduced programs, I've played with guys in suburban football who take care of themselves and present better than those two, and they pay to play.

I've cut Nick Stevens slack all year because I expected him to suffer in the absence of Camporeale, but his poor form on the field is now being suplemented by a lack of work off the field - which is completely unacceptable. In fact the only thing Steven's has offered this year has been a guided tour of his new mansion in 'Beyond the Boundary'. I never expect Stevens to be toned and chiselled in appearence - that's not his body type, he is a carbon copy of Michael Braun, but Braun, although having more injuries is fit and looks it.

I don't care whether these two players are put up for trade, I'm fairly certain they wont, but to reward either of them with the captaincy would be tantamount to negligence given the number of young men who will be looking for guidance as they are starting their careers with us over the next few years.

I'm glad that Fevola has turned around his life and his form, and I'm very appreciative of the exposure and young supporters he brings to the club, he truley is a franchise player. But he isn't captaincy material; anyone can see Brendon's thoughts run 2 seconds behind his mouth and that's not an attribute that befits a captain. He continuely claims he has the respect of the players but anyone who saw the ch nine coverage of today's game will have heard the serve Walker dished out to him, captains don't get torn to pieces by junior players for lack of effort.

The club has re-signed Kouta, not something that I would have done, but having seen the shape of the two that are exepected to step into the breach once Kouta does retire, I can understand the mentallity of the club in wanting him to stay. I would strongly urge the club to retain Kouta as captain for next year. Clubs such as Essendon* have had their captains relinquish their posts and we seem to be hell bent on doing the same, but these moves are done to give a chance to the captain in waiting, it makes perfect sense for Hird to pass it on to LLoyd, but we don't have a LLoyd.

I hope Kouta is allowed to lead the next generation of players through until his retirement and I believe by then their will be a new and viable candidate to take over. He's too young now but he bleeds navy blue and busts his arse week in week out to improve his own game, and he works tirelessly off the field setting a standard for young blokes to emulate. Andrew Walker may seem like a premature choice for captaincy in 2008, but the club should ask itself who it wants guys like Marc Murphy aspiring to become.

After yesterdays game I can no longer endorse Lance as our next captain, at the very time when we needed some leadership he did all the wrong things - he initiated Collingwoods come back and showed that he is a true fiery red head. I can only see one option now and that is to keep Kouta on for another season and then promote a younger player to the big role.

Fev...his work in backing his mates up on the field when the rough started was great...doenst take a backward step and the type of player who other players will follow into battle...backs it up with great perfomances up forward...he is the heart and soul of the club at the moment....and has a handy apprentice in Kade Simpson who reminds me more and more of Luke Power....there is your leadership team....

Walker has been showing heaps of leadership lately too. Not afraid to have a go at his more senior teammates and from what I could tell was one of the first to fly the flag when Scotland went down yesterday.

yep kept reminding dudak all day, even off the ball he was giving him a rough time no doubt he was flying the flag i just think he's too young for the captaincy.

I reckon Lachlan Hansen should be captain. If he's able to reverse to polarity of hte planet, he'd make a super captain as well. May as well let him hold up the cup if he's the reason why we win it next.

Kouta has to keep the job and hopefully someone jumps up next year. :?
Anyone else is getting the job by default.

Lance, Fev or Stevo, we'd be devaluing the role. :(

yeah i agree with that, there's no reason for kouta to step down from the captaincy i know his leadership is very minimal but if we pick someone we have to lock them in as captain for at least 3-4 years which gets rid of any hope of a trade (i.e whitnall/stevens) and maybe murph will have a super season, win our b & f and we can give it to him probably wont happen but it could.

The three who stood up to be counted yesterday and showed true leadership and heart were Fev , Simmo and Walker

I love Simmo so much - he never stops running and makes a point of running to team mates to pat them on the back - he is always in the frame on TV patting a head or tapping an ass - hehe

Those 3 should definitely be in the leadership group next year with one of them as captain.

They are also the 3 players that the Media are genuinely excited about on our list - which will also help bring the club back to the fore in the public eye

I don't really think anyone did themselves any favours yesterday. Fev got carried away and acted like a shitty petulant kid, Lance didn't do much at all, and Kouta faded after a cracking start.

So... that leaves us with Simmo and Walker.

Co-Captains, anyone?

If Richie Vandenberg is an AFL captain, we've got 22 blokes eligible...
