So Davey would make all the difference at Carlton yeah????

Look! We already have a crumber more talented than Davey .
Tell me everything you knew about Hudson and what you know about him now?
Where did he come from and how many games will he play???

How good is he???

Ok, maybe the Hudson pick was more speculative and to be honest harder to gauge. And I can understand the club leaning towards a ruckman that had played at AFL level. In hindsight a mistake, but at the time not so easy.

But Davey was all the talk that year. I saw him play a couple of times in 2003 for Port and he looked fantastic. His finish to that year was great. Davey and Kenna were touted as equally attractive forward pocket/goal sneak type players. I was hoping we'd pick him up. Instead we chose Kenna and the rest is history. This was a mistake. No if's or but's. I am happy that we have Betts on board and he will be a ripper once he adapts to AFL and Denis' instructions. But are we not able to assess a draft pick for what it is?

I saw him play too.
I thought... no left foot.. wouldnt go in cant mark.. flashy .
I also saw Kenna a couple of times and he dominated.
It was a gamble and it could have gone either way but it didnt. We took Kenna... because he showed more goal kicking sense in the VFL.
There is nothing wrong when you have a go and it doesnt work.
Moorcroft would have been a mistake.
Kenna was a gamble that didnt work.

Davey got run down while at full stride against the Eagles.
Doesn't add anything to the debate :)

Not doubting his skills, or his ability - he is one of my favourite players. We all know that he is soft, and I think that this is one aspect that won't really develop in Houla.

From an outsider's perspective, I thought Houlahan was terribly disappointing. He has obvious ability and skill, but his intensity for an experienced player was awful. The way he allowed Jordan McMahon, who is not known for his defensive exploits and acts of desperation (until this year), to intercept a short pass to him which Houla had a 5 metre head-start and waited for was really indicative of this guy's casual mindset. Pagan should show this passage of play to the young players as an example of them how not to impose yourself on the contest.

The obvious positives of the night were the wonderfully insightful commentary from Matty Campbell and Kevin "thrill of the grass" Bartlett. The Foxtel B team would be reaching Z proportions on FTA TV.

Synbad is right...Davey is just icing on the cake, a fancy finisher...we need solid core players to build a team around. Melbourne have a good structure so Davey can do his thing...we need a Brad Miller, Jeff White, Rivers etc to give us some spine....Davey isnt that type of player.
Synbad is also right baout the draft picks....we need quality players not maybes, hopefuls etc ...we need a Rewioldt/Judd type combo with our first couple of picks....you cant get that with down the list picks unless you get real lucky...

Mott and Kenna were a gamble. I didnt have a problem with them being selected on that basis...Eddie Betts is a gamble....Bryan is a gamble, as was Hudson and as was Davey...

We need to clear the decks and start again...forget bagging the coach...it isnt his fault....has only a few decent players...the 2000 draft has failed to produce any great players and that was probably our best chance in recent years with early picks..

Positives from this rnd..

Fevola was very good and tried hard, Carazzo is no superstar but he does run all day and have a go and seems to find the footy, Bryan....I thought he rucked ok in the second half and actually palmed the ball better....took a nice mark up forward and at least looks like a footballer.

Walker....didnt mind his game...playing with some spirit and isnt intimidated and taking some decent marks.....
Lappin and Thornton were both ok ...

Lappin's 50m goal was fantastic...just a shame the Dogs kicked about 14 just like it

Didn't see the game, which as I said was my positive

But I'd say there would have been a strong chance that if we had taken Davey, he may have gone the same way as Kenna. It's a lot easier being a goal sneak for Melbourne than it is for Carlton the last few years.

I only saw the game live, so missed the TV perspective (and cannot/will not put myself thru watching a replay) but I thought McGrath played pretty well.

He's no star, but at least put in and offered leads, placed shepherds etc. He'd be unlucky to get cut this year.

Others for me were Simmo, Walker and obviously Fev who all worked real hard all night.
