I agree. Some names are being thrown out who were players that didn’t make it but weren’t “whipping boys”. I think to qualify as “whipping boy” you need to have played a minimum of 40 games - ie. enough games for supporters to turn on you.

This removes Mitch McGovern (33), Athorn (30), Boekhurst (25), SMC (19), Doering (18), Andrew Merrington (18), Bootsma (14), Mick Martyn (13), O'Shea (11), Tarczon (11)

Maybe I set the bar a little high at 40 games, but I don’t think we should be including the likes of DVR, Jesse Smith & Caleb Tiller. They didn’t play enough games to become whipping boys.

I think the 40 game limit is fine.
McGovern gets in because he has played more than 40 games across two teams. And b/c of his namesake of the Marsh twins variety who is an all time classic cricket whipping boy!
Someone like Boekhorst was not really a whipping boy b/c he was never really up to it.
Houlihan, Campo, Murphy, Gibbs, Stevens, Plowman are some of those who fit the bill perfectly.

Heavs was saying that there should be an opposite applied here - blokes who became much more revered the more they didn't play seniors.

Forgot to add Luke Blackwell and his routine 40-45 touches a game in the Bullants every week to that criteria too.

Maybe there should be a separate thread about those blokes then.

I recall when we played Collingwood after Jordan Russell went there Carlton supporters obv started booing him.
This filth supporter said to my mate, "that's a bit harsh" and she said "Don't worry, he's used to it we booed him when he played for us too".

In fairness it did seem in the early days of the draft teams would just pick a name totally at random out of a hat. I'm pretty sure we picked James Cook at #2 one year. The mediocre forward, not the explorer.

I remember Campbell and Thornton starting about the same time and discussing (probably with you actually) that I thought Campbell was a long term prospect but Thornton wouldn't last 5 mins

Hahaha, then there was that great time in TC history when he was possibly up for trade & we all got all pissy that the Hawks wouldn't give us pick 6 for him

Didn't Tim Rienets kick 3 goals with his first 3 kicks in his first game?

Your memory is better than mine

I know he baulked around someone at the Heatley end to score a goal in 1990

IIRC...weren't they both Coburg VFA boys??
