also nice to see at least a few posters have sort of figured out what I was on about and managed to stay on topic

as an aside - am I correct in saying that collingwood was seen as embracing 'greek' heritage in the 70s along the lines of carlton being italian?
Collingwood? - Sto Dialo....
I think the Daicos (tenuous) mecedonian link may have caused that impression.
Don't think it's a problem NO MATTER HOW you look at it....
Every which way I read the posts 4thC they sound like "I'm not racist but...." and "...some of my best friends are black/asian/wogs etc"....
As Agro said (Agro, did I live next door to you?) ...There was a huge population of Greeks and Italians living around CArlton, Brunswick, Fitzroy and they as well as their kids realised that Footy was a part of Melbourne and supported!
These guys are now the corporates we are trying to get sponsoring the club....is it that difficult to understand???
The generational wave will dictate what you'll see when....The senior corporate or political figures (Hi Bracksy!) are now coming from the 2nd gen. of those immigrants in the 50s and 60s...and so on.
Chances of getting a major Asian sponsor is very slim....why?
Because the average Vietnamese or Cambodian (Chinese origin) came out in the 70sis working his butt off getting his kids through school and developing his business/income security/savings/home.
The next generation (probably only in their 30s now) are building on these , climbing the socila/legal/corporate ladder NOW....
they won't be potential sponsor targets for another 20 years....
Now lets see...Wogs in the 50s ....sponsors now about 50 years later...
Asians in the 70s...sponsors in about 20 years..or 50 years after the immigration wave....
Capisce?
Katalaves?
Cmprenez?

firstly, I dont actually have any black friends atm so if you are going to quote me at least be consistent
If Daicos was the only meditarranean link then obviously I am wrong - I was talking about the 70s though so it was a pre-daicos era. My concern about 'old' money isnt that they are italian - its more that they are from 'within' - sponsorship from locals or people who have long term links with coterie groups, former board members and the like. We didnt seem to be actively going out to companies that have no prior connection to the club. Perhaps its just me, but where are the big companies? Does our nike sponsorship compare favourably to what other victoria clubs receive for mcdonalds, anz, red energy, coke, NEC, and the like?
Its got nothing to do with finding an 'asian' sponsor or from any other ethnic group. Until we find an asian AFL player from one of the major ethnic groups (chinese, viet etc) then you arent likely to be getting that money - and we are probably still 10yrs away from that.
If we were going to go after a specific ethnic group for new sponsorship money we should be after anything with an irish link. Perhaps something tacky along the lines of the bridie o'reillys chain or similar.
I'd prefer if we didnt - I want us to target the big companies (as Ed did for collingwood) - Most companies of such size will have a sponsorship budget of some description so its a matter of being able to sell your brand to them and keeping them interested. It could be an a AUDI, BMW, Mercedes, Gatorade, Red Bull, IBM, Apple, etc.
