Shaun Higgins as a FA? Won't sign and just got omitted. Hasn't been injured this year.

Where would you play him?

I'd pass.

Docherty on one back flank, Higgins on another. Gives us flexibility to interchange him with Thomas on a forward flank. Maybe a little too old but if he replaces someone like Armfield or Tuohy it's a definite upgrade.

We should be looking at anyone available at the right price who can kick.

He is 26 , sign him up

How can you say he is too old when reality is FA's cannot by virtue of the qualification rule by kids?

Can kick. Sign him up.

Wouldn't cost us a compo pick either given we won't lose any FA of note this year (potentially Waite but we wont get anything more than a 3rd rounder at best)

Apparently has put off contract negotiations too. Unrestricted so we don't have to worry about Dogs matching it. But again, can't see him picking us over a better team like Geelong, Hawthorn etc.

Would be on decent coin at the Dogs, at the very least by pure necessity of having to pay the minimum in the cap and no-one really to give it to.

a) Do we have a brighter future than the Dogs or potential suitor? Probably not
b) Can we pay him more? Probably not.

My thoughts exactly. But it's worth a try.

He will be 27 at the start of next season.

Does anybody actually look at where we are on the ladder? We are looking like finishing bottom 4 and people want to top up with a 27 year old. Learn the lesson from picking up another injury prone 27 year old on huge coin from last year. It doesn't pay dividends.

Has anyone considered the requirement to rebuild the club with youth?

It doesn't cost us a pick. So it's not stopping us from picking up an extra kid.

It eats up a spot on the list, therefore it does.

If we want to cull as many we want to, we're going to end up having to use picks in the 100s to make up the list spots. I'd rather higgins than a 5th round pick.

It's a tough balancing act. You don't want to play kids before they are ready. You also don't want to deny them opportunities to grow and develop.

This year he's been pretty durable. It'd be a risk but an upgrade. Especially if we want to cull as many as we want to.

Ditto!

I actually like Higgens and wanted us to draft him at the time.

However, he is not what we need going forward.

BV I disagree with you on this one

I think we are going to have a bit of a void in terms of experience with the old midfield guard coming to the end and I think it doesn't hurt to get some experience in

And FAs (assuming he is one, I admit I haven't checked) can't be toddlers by virtue of the FA criteria

If it doesn't cost much in picks and dough I'm all for it as you're getting much needed experience and skill for zilch

I also don't think we are totally rebuilding from scratch

We have about 20 good players 27 or under so it's not like we are St.k who under Lyon refused to blood youth over a sustained period

I actually believe IF we can add 4 good players over the next two years we can be back in business

That's no guarantee though and it will need good drafting but adding a skilled 27 year old helps nail one of those four holes per se

The other three you'd be looking to add good kids

So you mostly add youth but also get for nothing a skilled 27 year old in the knowledge we are going to lose Scotland, Carrazzo, Judd, McLean, Waite, etc

I guess it depends if you think we have No hope but as I said I count 20 or so good players 27 or under which tells me we don't need to view this as a total rebuild
