Following from what Cazz said about our ranking system for contract negotiation, I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell us which two players T-Bird falls between in this system.

You wouldn't be giving away too much IMO, unless of course the CFC have completely cocked it up.

He falls somewhere between Fevola and Longmuir.

Supposedly Fev has given him a call asking him to stay. Hope this is true. He really does love the club.

I was thinking Fevola and Teague... :P

Anyway decided to have a quick flick through the list and rank the first 15 (on pay-packet then talent long-term) or so and throw some figures where we have a rough idea of what they're being paid.

Fevola - 500-600k
Stevens - 500k
Whitnall - 400k
Walker*
Simpson
Murphy*
Thornton
Lappin - 250k
Houlihan - 200 - 250?
Kouta* - 200 - 250?
Kennedy*
Scotland*
Waite*
Fisher

* - Denotes that figure may be askew from expectations due to age, change in form

Don't pay too much attention to the figures, unless I'm completely off, they're just something myself and others tried to pull from memory.

So going off this, Thornton is on the lower end of the scale in the 250 - 400k range, in which case 250 to 300 would be a good offer.

Yes I know these aren't the figures of their base offers, but I assume they rank them on predicted output at the time of signing, even if it means there's a few slots empty towards the top pay brackets (or so I hope).

If anyone feels they have more accurate figures or rankings, feel free to provide them.

I just posted this on another site. The numbers are a bit fuzzy obviously, but the principle is the same:

Quote:
Do the maths people. $6,470,000 in salary cap to go around 40 players and 5 rookies. That's $144K per player.

Now assume the bottom 18 players actually average roughly half of that ($75K), with half of them on base payments (about $55k from memory), and the other half on the remainder of larger contracts from when they were starting players. Add in the rookies on $40K - that's $1.55 m gone. Add Fev, that's $2m gone. Add Stevens and Whitnall - that's $3 million gone. That leaves $3.47 million for your remaining 19 players out of your starting 22. That's $182k per player.

So any time you go "T-bird - he's worth $300k easy", that's $120K you've got to take away from someone else in the starting side somewhere. 10 guys from that remaining 18 who have to take a $12K pay cut. Or 5 who have to take $25K. How many times can you do that before your last 12 players are getting paid absolute peanuts and have no incentive to stay whatsoever (ie you never have any depth in your bottom 12 players)? Waite’s on more than $182K. So is Walker, so is Lappin, and if Simmo’s not he should be. That’s four already. So that does that mean players 11-22 are on now? …. $120k maybe?

Now obviously the salary cap is going up but we will have two No.1 draft picks and a pick 4 who will expect to be paid accordingly within two years. That combined with increases in the various base payment levels will eat up most of the salary cap rise.

Now the above numbers are just approximations, but the point is there is never as much space in the salary cap as people think there is. This is why it is laughable, in hindsight, that we ever believed we were under the salary gap when we were paying Campo and Lance $500K each and Kouta a cool million.

I should probably add my point is that when you break it down $240-$260 is not a bad offer for T-bird, particularly when his management and the club will probably end up splitting the difference and settling on $280.

We'll have to settle for 3 in a row instead of 4 then

I thought Fev was closer to $350, 000 plus marketing allowance...and seeing he is one of the few marketable players at the club that would actually lead to people buying memberships/merch/attending games he is well worth it...

Here is proof of the beat up about Thorton leaving the blues.

The Age - Stephen Rielly
September 28, 2006
CARLTON full-back Bret Thornton might have played his last game for the Blues, with the 22-year-old understood to have privately indicated that he is prepared to move to Hawthorn.

The Australian - Greg Denham
September 28, 2006
Meanwhile, Carlton is confident of retaining its required players, including Brad Fisher and Bret Thornton, who are both out of contract.
Blues general manager of football operations Grant Williams said he expected the pair, and another 10 uncontracted players, to agree to terms in the near future.

Now what do you believe.
What ever the case we cannot afford to lose a 22 year old young defender especially considering our backline is fragile as it is.
O'Hailpin is still learning the game, Whitnall is not your tight checking backman, Livingston will not be there next year & Saddington is injury prone.
For those who suggest that we will get Hawthorn's pick 6 for Thornton, it wont happen and because it wont happen Thornton must stay. Pick 24 and a player is not good enough compensation for losing a 22 year , 91 game defender.
Surely Thornton is worth $250K a year. Priority should have been to sign up our kids and not sign up Kouta who is finsished. I cannot understand how we cannot afford to pay Thornton. Who else are we paying. Other than Fev, Stevens and Whitnall no one will be on big contracts. We still have to pay 92% of the cap.
C'mon blues this should have been dealt with ages ago.
We should be focusing on building the side and not destroying it.

New thread???

But if you read closely the 2 stories can co-exist quite nicely. The Age said Thornton has privately advised he may leave the Blues, whilst the Blues are confident.... 2 viewpoints, 2 sources, that could both be right.

Why would you bother when the Herald Sun's "such a convenient size"?

I will be absolutely amazed if Thornton does not re-sign at Carlton.

But just in case - I would offer our pick 12 ...

I actually saw him play a bit later in the season and he looked very impressive. Thats why I'm prepared to trade him for Whitnall without a sweetner

Let's be honest though, as good as he is and will be...he's no Marc Murphy...there's no parting seas and curing the ill from Nathan Jones
