We all would love to leave Lance up forward but as we seen against the pies the hole down back only gets bigger, while the losing margins become larger. Carlton needs lance down back. Or are we happier to give it a go and lose by larger margins? Atleast before we were always in the game, losing by smaller margins and always with a sniff of victory but skill errors and dicision making costing us the game.

atm I'd rather watch richmond games (ignoring of course their horrible club) where their players are willing to take the opposition on (including first gamers who get plenty of game time) rather than a team that floods continually and 'plays' newbies on the bench.

The problem with our game plan is that it doesnt give much for the supporters to be positive about. Most here would probably be a lot more positive had Kennedy spent most of the time on the ground and perhaps taken a couple of marks or kicked a goal or two.

The only problem is we are always robbing Peter to Pay Paul.

If we get our front six settled, then we can genuinely work on a back six and our midfield.

We just keep shuffling the deck chairs.

Having said that of course he is playing awesome down back.

Given we ae are at, just play him forward at least for one half. You never know, we may win the ball and he fire early and it lift our confidence.

also on whitnall forward - u dont know how many goals he may have kicked or created. From very limited opportunities he managed to kick 1 in the last when we were completely gone - average that out and that might have been 4 goals for the game (and perhaps more through passes/knock ons to other players)

so far this year from memory Whitnal has played 3 quarters of football up forward

He has kicked five- Given one to Betts and had Waite mark one on the goal line he has dished one off to Kouta and another to Fev( I think)

so basically he had contributed 9 goals in the 3 quarters that he has played there. not bad for a side whose best this year has been 13 goals

dont ask me how many he has saved for us down back.

and another point we need to consider on sunday we were 16 points down with 6.45 left to play in the 3rd quarter we had up till that point almost 60 % of the possession. At that point Rocca out marked Whitnal for the first time in the game - It was all down hill from there. It always amazes me how quickly things can go belly up in a game of football as the next time Collingwood moved forward French was out bodied and outmarked by Davis.

I'm starting to think its not the coach the admin or the players - I think we need a better Shrink

Lance should play up forward. You should always play your best players in their best position.

SB - there was also the mark just 1/2 second after the siren that could have been a goal in the hawks game

in terms of goals saved - that is almost impossible to figure out unless u count all potential marks inside 50 by his opponent and all chopoffs etc as a goal (which is unrealistic)

Valid point that we were still in the game. I mentioned to my buddies that if we could hold the margin till 3/4 time, we were a real chance, based on our 2nd quarter. Then came a horrific turnover from Walker on our half forward line, and then Rocca took that mark.

TalkingCarlton is for talk on the team, the coaches, tactics etc. If you wish to discuss individual players then do so at TalkingPlayers. If you want to discuss the way the site is run then feel free to post your thoughts on TalkingIssues, TalkingFutures or PM one of the mods.

Constructive feedback is always welcome. We're trying to make the site a little easier to keep up with. Some things we'll get right, some we won't.

Sorry Brad old mate. Just having a bit of fun at the expense of those who graciously give up their time so I can waste my time more efficiently. What if I want to do a post on multiple players??

Depends which players. If its Pickett, Salopek, Bartel, Zantuck, Akermanis it'll probably end up here

Our problem on Sunday was not whether Lance was forward or back (although I would agree that you play your best player in his best position). The problem that we had was that we were getting crunched in the clearances. Our onball brigade just couldn't get the footy. So when the Pies had the ball all the time our backline was under seige. Lance was getting chills in the first part of the last quarter because the ball was just not getting past our half-forward line.

Interesting observation Mallee.
The statistics show that we dominated the clearances in the first half but Lance played down back when we were on top and had no one to kick to.
Late in the third and in the last quarter, Collingwood dominated the clearances and Lance was put up forward.

Bad management methinks.

BTW, we won the clearances on the day.

Is that clearances to advantage though? Seemed to me a lot were just roosts forward to nobody in particular.

I thought we smashed Collingwood out of the middle for the first 3 qtrs and the stats above seem to back this up. We were turning it over and letting them come back at us and score. Definitely not a clearance issue ... more of a midfield turnover problem in our attacking half.

In the final qtr once we went with Wiggins and a few different options in the middle, collingwood took it out of there at will.

The weekend was the perfect reason why Lance has to play forward. The fact that Rocca was his matchup disguises the fact that Whitnall had been flogged by Croad and Richo the past few weeks.

Collingwood had numereous avenues to goal which is why they are scoring to heavily at present. If Carlton play Whitnall up forward we have another 60+ goal kicker to aim for, all of a sudden our midfield grows confidence in that they have a target to kick to and ohhh we may actually play direct footy again.
