I think I realised why we have one of those short kicking gameplans... We can't kick long. Watching McGrath on the weekend was a little bit frightening - it wasn't that he didn't see Fev one-out on the stick-man, I reckon he honestly thought that the trip was beyond him. At first I thought that Fev should've seen this coming and positioned himself a little further up, but looking back it was only 50-odd metres. Its probably the same reason why two blokes got caught out running the ball from centre-wing to HFF (OK Stevo bounced the ball on the only pot-hole out there) but there was definite opportunity for Eddie to kick long to the one-out contest rather than take the extra bounce. Wondering from the regular observers at training what the likely kicking distances are for our midfielders. Both on the run, and off a few steps... |

McGrath is a beautiful left foot kicker who can kick it 50mtrs no problem. Probably just a brain fade why he didn't go to Fev. Acuracy is our main problem and gaining some confidence & poise will help to fix that. |

Budzy is right ... McGrath would have had no problem reaching Fev on that shot. Perhaps this was another situation where that "creativity" has been drilled out of the players, and he was looking for a loose target instead of an obvious mis-match. Now with the 2 chase downs , I think a factor was that in both cases the runner thought the chaser had been shepherded. The problem was that in both cases, the shepherders did not finish the job, in that they threw the arms out but did not actually put the extra effort in and run the extra few metres to make sure the shepherd was effective. From memory, it was Josh shepherding for Stevens, can't remember who did it for Eddie. The guys should have been given clear instructions to get Fev in the one on ones, but this did not appear oto happen. In fact the forwards kept crowding each other most of the game. Fisher was injured when he backed into Fev instead of leading his man away, although perhaps he did not realise Fev was so close. |
