Named on the interchange bench in 13 of his 30 games (BP in 10 others). Did very well to rack up two premiership medals in only 30 games. Debuted for the Blues as a 24 year old.

Stephen's data says he came from Geelong/Leopold/Geelong/St. Pats Ballarat/Koondrook, so looks like he was a bit a journeyman.

Cool name though.

He spent the whole of the 1981 Grand Final on the bench. You can still see him wearing his track suit top as they do the Blues do their victory lap. David Parkin later apologised to him for not giving him a run.

Found out he had been delisted by Geelong at their gurnsey presentation night, when someone else was called up on stage to recieve his jumper!!!! Only then did an official come over to him amd tell him he was not required that year. True story - he told it at a Carlton Gurnesy presentation dinner about 6 years ago.

I have memory of him playing a part in one of Lou Richards stunts where Lou would make a statement along the lines of "if the Blues beat such and such I will have Mario tip a bucket of Spaghetti over my head in Lygon St"

The Blue's must of got up because the was a photo in the Sun with Lou covered in Spaghetti with Mario in the photo.

back pocket in 82 GF (now this is 82 - the year of drugs, alcohol, a few wanky plays and a certain European lass as mad as a cut snake (and just as writhing )

He was picked for balance as much as anything and because of their talls - retsing ruckman. Played a solid game (hell we won, they all played solid games) was a player who dominated in local football but really had nothing that stood out in the VFL.

Mario Bortolotto....DOB: 26-06-1957.

191cm and 92kg.....in 1981; he was a Plumber and Single.

He wore guernsey No. 6; played with Carlton 1981-83; and generally played as a Half Back or in the last line of defence.

After being discarded by Geelong after 14 games and 3 goals during 1979-80; he was selected in our 81-82 Premiership Sides.

Played 32 games at Carlton for 1 goal.

He also played in the 1983 Night Premiership - say what you like about him, but he could into the team at the right time. Given the jobs he had, he was servicable.

Probably his best game for Geelong was against us - he kept Maclure very quiet at a time when he was going pretty well. He wore 29 for them.

No. 6 for us and always played well in the big games. Had he been a bit faster he would have been around for a lot longer.

He was involved in the Lou Richards stunt as he was one of the more Italian members of the team at the time. He may not have been there often before we recruited him, but he fit in well when he got there.

He played on David Cloke in the 1982 Grand Final and held him to 3 goals, you were right and was picked against the threat of Richmond going tall in that game - but they oddly left out Brian Taylor which could have caused us severe problems in the last quarter.

We did the same thing in 1981 - we only bought Scott Howell into the side to negate the height of Peter Moore, Howell towelled up Moore, but Moore went into the game with a hamstring scare (Howell/Towelled - I like that)

I remember talking to Bortolotto at training in 1983 (I think he was injured) and he said words to effect that his was a Cinderella story - and that he was quite aware that great players in the game had never played in a final let alone 2 winning Grand Finals. A modest and genuine bloke.

Great work people...

got reported in the 2nd last game of 1983 against north at PP (at least i think it was the 2nd last game ... ). copped 2 weeks and IIRC missed the next 2 games against Essendon* (rd 22 & elimination final).

by this stage we were so light on for talls that we actually missed him in those Essendon* games.

bosustow also got reported in that north game, and never played for the blues again

Spot on Agro. Good performance by Borto. One of those goals was a handball over the top and another a free kick, from an extravagnet marking attempt by Borto, so he was only really beaten for one goal. Cloke was Richmond captain and Tiger fans never really forgave his insipid 82 performance, he went to the Pies not long after. Borto, along with Wow Jones gave us lots of mongrel. Mark Lee was a talented ruckman who thought he was tough. Wow was a battler who really was tough, and gave Lee a bath and Borto did the same for Cloke.

Great bloke.

I sat next to his uncle at a Carlton function and he told me the same story Speedy recounted about his departure from Geelong.

Proudest moment was definitely 1982 GF - played well on Cloke who was probably their most threatening players.

One of about 30 players on the ground with stronger claims for the Norm Smith Medal than Maurice Rioli.
