This seriously is a winnbale game given how badly the Roos are travelling at the moment.

Do we want to waste one of our 2 wins remaining in order to not lose the PP on this game?

Marc Murphy and Josh Kennedy in the Ants has shown what early draft picks can mean.

Thoughts?

I want the Blues to win.

Hawthorn are at least making steps in the right direction now.

They are making their first steps - much like a kid making his/her first steps.

We are still a gurgling, bubbling, farting mess. We haven't even begun to crawl. if you want to play finals footy in a few years time carlton have to start at least making progressive steps in form and confidence now.
You can't go from a bubbling mess to a runner in the space of two years.

look at port adelaide - they are the role model. they recruit well and have had few picks in the top 10... look at how well they recruit.

Saying all that - i don't think carlton are capable of winning anyway.

the coaching staff don't seem to want to make the courageous, tough decisions on player placements.

Tap - The impressive part about Port is that they have 10 players currently playing with less tha 50 games .

Unlike us they were not over run by West coast and we only had 8 players with less than 50 games playing .

Its a worry that Port may rebound quickly because no other clubs shits me as much as that bunch of Ferals

Of course we want to win.

It doesn't matter if North finish below us, we can trade some players for there first 2 draft picks.

The plan will be their second round draft pick and Hay for Callum Chambers, early in trade week, then later in the week we will trade Hay back to the Roos for their first round pick. :-D

of course we should want to win, but whether the club sees it that way remains to be seen. It is a sad statement on our competition that we are even having this discussion. Bring in a lottery - the sooner the better please

Gee we must be travelling ok. We can actually pick and choose which 2 games we want to win. If that is the case then I don't want to beat the Kangaroos, I'll take a win against Sydney in Sydney and then we should choose to beat Collingwood.

Loss please.

We need one more decent crack at the draft before we go full steam ahead.

Go for the win. There's nothing like going to work on a Monday morning after a win. Not to mention actually enjoying watching the footy for a change!

It's not like we're going to overdo it and make the finals or anything. If the next draft is "that" good then Bryce Gibbs is just another fish in the ocean.

Game on.

true, the draft may be good, but the decisions that have to make could make a big difference.

Example - 2001 draft. Top 3 picks are all quality, but Judd is superior to the other 2. At least at the moment. WCE made a good decision to get Judd and it could be assumed that they may not be as dominant if they had Ball or Hodge

Last year I was one of the people (albeit cringingly) hoping we'd lose matches so we'd get picks 1 & 4 - as opposed to just pick 5, which could easily have been the case.

This year is the difference between the spoon & finishing 13th pick 1 as opposed to pick 4? Or am I missing something?

Depends on how many wins for us this year CK. If we win 4 matches or less we'll get a bonus pick at the start of the 2nd round (pick 17 if we're last, 18 if we're second last etc).

So assuming Essendon* comes last and we come second last with four wins (and all other teams win at least 4.5) we'll get picks 2, 18, 20 36, 52, 68 etc.

On the other hand if we win 4.5 or more matches and Essendon* only win 4 (and all other teams win 4.5 or more) we'll get picks 3, 19, 35, 51, 67 etc.

In other words,

Tank this year = Additional top 20 pick.

realistically the only team carlton can beat is Essendon* (and only when injury depeleted).
don't be surprised if the Blues put in one of their worst performances of the season (just like other winnable games against Hawthorn and Richmond). not because they're trying to be bad. just because they are that bad.

seriously one good game against the eagles (which carlton lost anyway) should not delude some people into thinking we can pick and choose the games we want to win.

Its time to send the Kangaroos to the bottom and begin their relocation to Southport. Not sure who i dislike the most, Brent Harvey or Andrew Lovett?

Thanks GWS & that is what I suspected.

I know it's a super draft & all that but I wouldn't be too pissed of if we finished on, say, 6 or 7 wins & missed out on the additional top 20 (& looking at the draw I think that is quite achievable if we play like we did for 3 qtrs against WCE)

At some stage this young Carlton side has to get accustomed to winning & if we beat North, Ess, Fre, Rich, Haw, I'd be quite happy.

There are some years where tanking is a necessary evil & obviously I thought last year was one of them for Carlton.

But if we can finish off this year strongly that could auger really well for 2007 & 2008. I remember the Hawks were pretty average in 99, then closed out the last 6 or so games well & made the finals in 2000. Then in 2001 were within 2 kicks of a GF appearance. The dogs last year had a cracking 2nd half to their season & have carried the momentum into 06.

we definitely need to win this game. if we dont there's a fair chance we'll get the spoon again. i'm sure no carlton supporter will be able to bear a 3rd spoon in 5 years. if we win it'll only mean we have a better chance of finishing 15th which is the ideal position for us given the quality of this year's draft. we get a really good pick plus and we dont get a spoon.

SOrry GWS - just one step in the logic I didn't get but its probably inferred... is the move from 2 to 3 because North gets pick 2 assuming Carlton's win this weekend propels us above them (and it stays that way all season)?

ps North! Who calls them North these days?
