If you look at the bottom of the page, you'll notice some of the targets that the Age puts forward for the Bombers' benefit are Simmo and Russell.

All speculation as per usual...

Ooooh maybe we can do a Sheeds and trade away a young player or early pick to get back Campo so he can finish his career at his rightful club!!

Or maybe he wants to trade us for our Million Dollar Man. Please!!

Ahhhh the 5 stages of grief. We've all been there and now it's their turn. We're at #5 but they are now in the transition between 2 and 3.

1. Denial (this isn't happening to me!)

2. Anger (why is this happening to me?)

3. Bargaining (I promise I'll be a better person if...)

4. Depression (I don't care anymore)

5. Acceptance (I'm ready for whatever comes)

My prediction last year that Campo and Sheedy's careers would both finish at the end of 2007 are looking more and more likely :-D .

McVeigh is a top 8 pick from NSW - the Swans would never let him go.

Brent Staker has to be their sole target.

This makes me laugh:

Essendon* recognises that its position at the foot of the ladder is a once-in-a-generation opportunity; the Dons haven't been last since the Great Depression and mightn't get another (free) crack at both the best kid in the land and first uncontracted player for decades.

Yeah, because after this year, they're going straight back up to the top of the table.....

Forget about Essendon* we should be having a crack at Meeson and Hansen or at least drive the asking price up a bit....

Most players are on 2 year contracts so close to half of all AFL players will be out of contract each year. I'm sure Essendon* will want to add to those recriting triumphs of recent years- Murphy, Allan, Campo & Fevolution's own Ty Zantuck.

If I was Jordan Russell and weighing up the alternatives.

Carlton: An asshole coach who keeps me in the VFL while losers like Prendergast and Livingston play seniors. When I do get a game I get kept on the bench for 3/4's of the match.
Essendon*: A coach who has said he will play youth at every opportunity and will basically promise I play 22 games in 2007 if I work hard.

C: A coach who has been told to try and get results because 'we are carlton we dont play to lose' with no idea of the current footballing environment.
E: A coach who has the backing of the board to bottom out and pick up a future Brownlow Medalists like Bryce Gibbs because they understand the footballing environment.

C: An idea of a marketing initiative is to go on the footy show and say how broke we are, are looking to sell home games interstate and couldn't negotiate a 'blockbuster' game on a public holiday if our life depended on it.
E: A marketing initiate is to play on ANZAC day each year and be pro-active in fixturing more big time matches. eg. The dream time game - it won't be long before that is played as a big Friday night game with 80000 attending regularly.

Wow, I wonder where I would choose if i was a Collingwood supporter as a kid(I think he was) and had the choice between Carlton and Essendon*.

Well sheep, when someone like Russell leaves I don't want to see you crying about it when we have finished the year on six wins and missed an opportunity to pick up a priority pick.

This makes Friday nights game an even more important one given that it is an 8 pointer - CARRRRRRRRN THE ROOS!!!!!!!!

Secure enough with myself to realise that wanting to lose doesn't make me any less of a supporter.
Willing to put a bit of short term joy aside for the long term good of the club.

CG, you logic is not quite right here. Losing consistantly year in year out will make players such as Russell, Simpson & others at the very least consider their options elsewhere.
Some of your other points are quite relevant though.

I know I actually agree with you. If I was Russell and we won 4 games for the year I would want to leave. If we won 6 on the other hand, I would be hell bent on staying and wanting to be part of the next premiership no matter what.

Considering that Essendon* will finish not that far from us (again!!!!), I think they had best beware of US, trying to poach someone from them. I am sure our admin has NOT forgotten the tactics they used last year to get Campo.
The only problem is finding someone to steal.

Number of wins are irrelevant. It's not that simple. It's the vibe of the club "onfield" that is very relevant. We have shown nothing over 4 years onfield. If we don't start showing some improvement soon, I wouldn't be surprised if some of our youngsters jump ship soon.

Or maybe an enlighted coach(who has had a quiet word with him) giving just a taste to those not quite ready allow time to develop in possible a Bullants Premership side with other young developing players. Thus allowing them to breed a winning mentality with the other long term futures of our club.

Id rather our kids develop in the twos and win rather than get smashed phycially and psychologically week in week out.

yeah i think that'd do them more good but they should still be given little tastes of the afl game every now and then in the twos they'll become more confident, learn from their mistakes which wont be as costly as it would in the afl and then they wouldnt do it in the afl and they'd be more hungry to play afl.
