Post subject:  Carlton v Bulldogs.... Discussion?
Have had enough of thinking about Geelong. I despise them and their even (yet a little slow and out of form) list.

Watching Roos v Dogs was interesting today. Dogs were clearly off the boil skill-wise but the Roos played a half-baked Crows game today, with an extra marking player in the goal square to cut off the long bomb (Bannister?) and a good 3-4 extra midfielder at the 50 to force the long kick. On the rebound they were pretty precise going forward, particularly to THompson of course.

Many here hate the defensive game, although Pagan has had a spare man i n defence in his Coaching Manual since 1993, but does anyone think that's not how we'll play? We cant outrun the Dogs, have to try to win the rucks and win the marks. They remain short.

For tags I'd try to take West and Ray out - their real centremen. Pagan will probably try to take out Cooney (with Walker, interesting match) and Gilbee. But its their linkmen that i think need to be stopped.

Thoughts?

I'd like to see Blackers go with West - what an education that would be for the kid.

Play Russell on Gilbee

Play Setanta on the wing

Play Tex on Ray and tell Tex to go for it! Make ray chase him.

Play Edwards/Jackson for Sporn

Play Batson for French

Play bryan for Mclaren (sadly Synners appears to be right again. damn! damn! damn!8) )

We did manage to beat the Doggies in a practice match in the country earlier in the year. I know some people here went up there to see the game might remember how we won.

Why do we always cop teams on the rebound?

The one I'm really worried about is Brad Johnson. I really can't see that we've got anyone quick enough and good enough in the air to go with him. With some decent delivery from their running players, expect him to get five or six goals against us.

This is where guys like Bower will be good for us in a couple of years. But now... who do we put on him? Maybe Bannister can do a minding job down back?

Been watching a fair bit of the Dogs this year, and they get shitloads of drive from half back.

McMahon is lightning quick (maybe a job for Tex?), Gian is still getting back to match fit, Boyd can't be far off most improved player in the comp, and if you close all them down, guys like Hargraeves and Gilbee bite you on the arse.

Next week could be real ugly I reckon (as if this week wasn't?)

why didnt we get eade when we had the chance to?..he wouldnt have costed more than pagan :(

Lets face it,the Dogs are everybodies second team.They are one side that ya love to see win.So much spirit,they never say die.Always up against it and forever on the precipace of extinction.But like true bulldogs,they never give up and are never defeated.Its true folks.I once owned a Bulldog and they are magnificent animals.Best dog i ever owned.Broke my heart when he died and i cant bring myself to get another dog.It would seem like a betrayel.And for that reason i am always in the dogs kennel.But not this week.Unfortunately injuries have finally caught up with them and they are extremely vulnerable.Hate to say it,but i gotta horrible feeling its all gonna unravel for the dogs.Started today and we can definately beat them
Pretty simple game plan required .Play ugly ! man on man.Just man up on there midfield running brigade and they will collapse.Who gets who doesnt really matter,just so long as they are all manned up ALL DAY.Dont let 'em breath for a minute.

if we dont man up on every player they are going to absolutely pulverise us but the problem is that the majority of our players arent going to be able to keep up with them no matter how hard they try, they are just a lot quicker and a lot fitter than our players. if pagan floods against teams like Essendon* then expect a tidal wave in our backline for the bulldogs.

The way the Roos played it is that the Dogs were forced to take long shots to the goal square rather than have time for the lead. Johnson would kill any of our players on the lead. The Dogs will work on being precise over the week but we'll need to block them up (against the orders of most posters it would seem) to have any shot of being credible.

walker would kill him for speed and endurance but johnno is way too strong for him , i guess walker has a bit of a height advantage in a game we cant win, i dont think it would hurt to give walker a bit of experience as to how the best small forward in the game plays.

Isn't it time given there small forward line too be proactive and load our forward line first.

Fevola, Whitnall, Kennedy, De luca etc. With Betts etc as crumbers.

I think we get plenty of the ball but don't use it well.

I think we don't use it well based on a certain skill level, but also a lack of confidence after awhile. Surely with a potent foward line our mid field will gain confidence and deliver better.

Defensively Thornton would be our main man, but potentially if Bryan was too come in he could fill a void or even Sentanta at times. We don't need too be too big down back.

We need too match them with run and use a taller forward line too our advantage, at the Dome it will be dry, and that is a fact.

I thought the same thing. The problem is that amongst us we've listed 5-6 players Walker would match up on. He can't continue being the problem solver down back.

Their skills will kill us every day of the week.
It'll be a good opportunity for the kids to play a team that plays consistent fast, running football with plenty of drive from the half back flank.

Blackwell on West for football 101 for his size and speed.

Good suggestion, Deano Supremo, about the job for Tex.

I think a half-forward flank/wing where he isn't expected to tag one of their key players is the way to go.

Does anyone know how much time Blackwell was given on the ground?

and although Sentanta wasn't brilliant - i would have still kept him on the ground and given him an easier match-up...
