Hi Guys,

a trivial rumour and one that has been sent from someone to someone else to someone else and then me, so I can't confirm the source, but as a famous Aussie once said "done't let the truth get in the way of a good story".

Anyway this is what I was sent......

"I have it on good authority that Carlton had a meeting last week to discuss our inability to win. Apparently Pagan gathered the players around and asked for their opinions and, in front of all the players, Matthew Lappin said that although Pagan had been there four years, he was still uncertain as to what style of game the coach wanted him to play. They tell me you could have heard a pin drop. Pagan took Lappin aside after that and, surpisingly, he didn’t play last week, but is back this week."

Watching Lappin play this year (and plenty of others besides) it's obvious that many of the players think this.

Whether it was said or not is, as you point out, purely rumour. But if true, the coaching situation would be bordering on untenable.

Took a while for your 1st post klaatu seeing as you've been here since day 1.
It was worth the wait though  ...an interesting post.

I call for a thorough cleanout of the board & the Football department.

A bit harsh on the 3 new guys on teh board, but as far as the rest are concerned - you are 100% right. We must make sure none of the 3 that stand this year get back in.

Keep Newton, Lee & Bear on the board. Keep Mitchell, Kernahan & Dempsey (full time) on the FD. Get rid of the rest. I'd call that a thorough cleanout.

So why didn't he play last week? Was he really injured?

As much as I'd like that to have happened, I cant imagine that being true - something like that would have gotten out into the media and would make major headlines.

One of the things that gets up my snoz is that Malthouse,Matthews,Sheedy and DP are seen as unsackable by various people.

DP is contracted to 2008 but I reckon if we dont improve next year then he may not see out his contract.Of course it isnt just Pagan its the invisible right hand man Elshaugh as well and a few others.

From what I have seen I am super impressed with Mitchell. He may be the next senior coach.

The point of the rumour is that DP seems inflexible and is over sensitive to criticism. And the team does play play with passion to some degree for the coach. Our players dont seem to do this all the time(last week being a good example)

Doesn't ring true to me.

If a coach calls a team meeting like that to try to involve the team in discussions about team performance, either explicitly or implicitly he gives them permission to speak freely. Once he does so, the team, and perhaps the AFLPA, would be rightly angered if he punished a player for speaking freely. Particularly when the bloke allegedly singled out is a senior and popular player in Skinny.

Sounds like someone did a cut-and-paste job and changed Matthews/Akermanis to Pagan/Skinny. No doubt Skinny's absence for a week was all that was needed. If Skinny had been demoted, you'd think there may have been some substance. But in a team that is being beaten regularly, and in the middle of a gruelling season, if I were Pagan and I wanted to punish Skinny in this situation, I wouldn't do it by giving him a week off. I would have played him as a tagger on Gary Ablett for the whole match. Or I'd tell him to follow around Milburn and niggle him to put him off his game. After all, the technique of punishing a player with an unsavoury assignment was used with Fev a while back.

The coach has retaliated against people saying stuff after they had been invited for feedback before.
It sounds within the realms of possibility.

Almost 4 years of an uncompromising Pagan hardline approach and 4 years on from Black Friday, we are still struggling to survive in a pit of quicksand.
We as a club should be more advanced down the road to recovery than we presently are.
We still have only a proposal of a facility upgrade at Princes Park and a sprinkling of elite playing talent which needs a modern development approach.
We are still laden by debt, barely treading water surounded by an ever increasing number of sharks.
We need to break this current cycle.
We need a fresh approach.
We need major change.
We need a new group of leaders to step forward.

I want to know why www.sackpagan.com isn't a real website!

Then there's the subject of our not being able to afford to pay him out? Maybe that's what the loan from the AFL will be used for!

Yeh, but putting him on Gehrig in Full Back made him a better full forward, for mine

Could you elaborate on this comment, Synbad? Who and how?

If we use the AFL money to pay out Pagan, then not only have we truly become the new St Kilda, the chances of us ever getting any "head office" assistance in the future becomes less than zero.

To use that money for that reason is mismanagement on a scale even JE would cringe at.

Just as we have to make do with the talent we have on the list at the moment, we also have to make do with the Coaching staff, if indeed they aren't the right people for the job at the moment.

Fact 1: We don't have Wells or Goddard*. Get the f*ck over that.

Fact 2: Pagan has a rock-solid contract with Carlton. Get over it.

Goddard's a lumbering inept player anyway. Who cares that he can kick the ball long if he does SFA for 99% of the match. Anyway that's an argument for another thread.

Maybe if Kouta retires we can use the money we save from his contract to pay out Pagan!!!! Be about the same and we wouldn't lose anything compared to this year. Seriously I'm sure he can be paid out over a few years. At the worst we can pay him over the term of his contract. Can't have this go on for another 2 years, we'd have no members left by then! We win less games each year. It's probable going it's to be less than last year and anywhere between 6-8 less than 2 years ago. Enough for me. Drag us through the street broke for all I care, just get rid of him. Have to be financially better off in the long-term. We lost the equivalent fo what we owe Pagan for the next 2 years in lost membership this year and with some re-newed optimism we may get that all back next year. That would cover us.
