Time after time we continue to miss targets which result in most cases in goals to teh opposition.I can guarantee if we didnt makes so many mistakes we would have won atleast ano9ther half a dozen games this year. What can we do to improve this for next year? If we do improve this I think we can realistically win 10 games next year! |

It is because our players are less skilled than those of other teams. |

Although our side's a bit different now (maybe alot), I remember in 1999 we couldn't hit a target to save ourselves, then suddenly we were a chance, the players wanted it so much more, all of a sudden we couldn't miss a target and ended up in the GF. Alot to do with having real want and focus. You be surprised. |

Alot of it comes down to CONFIDENCE - we don't have it!!! |

Read the thread title using Popeye's voice. Funny. But yeah, agree with the sentiment - today was frustrating - I coulda strangled Nick Stevens after that dribbled shot on goal in the last qrtr. |

That's exactly it- I reckon we missed heaps more targets in the last quarter than we did in the first 3 when we had our tails up and were in the game. |

Watched it on Foxtel and Healy made the comment that Scott Clayton wont recruit players who cant kick properly....some of our blokes have poor technique which gets amplified under pressure....you can try and fix the technique or get some better players with a higher skill level...... Adelaide have very few poor users of the ball... a lot of their no name players who have become good players all kick the footy well. |

Adelaide have very few poor users of the ball... a lot of their no name players who have become good players all kick the footy well. See I have a bit of a problem with that. Are Adelaide's and Footscray's and whoever else's kids necessarily invariably better kicks of the footy, or do they just play in better sides than Carlton, in something resembling a current culture of success. Whilst I do agree that individually some of our players aren't the best kicks, it'd be pretty harder for young fellas even at Adelaide to use the ball well at Carlton than it is currently. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying we're a super skilled team by any stretch I just can't accept the argument that Adelaide and others necessarily have much better users of the footy. Personally I believe a lot of that perception is shaped by the relative successful culture embedded at the club in question. I bet if you put some of our young blokes into Adelaide their skills would be perceived as better too. |

Adrian Deluca (when did he adopt the second glove?); 3. Denis Pagan

Part confidence part technique; some of our players we know can hit targets most of the time but due to a lack of confidence are turning it over. Some simply don't have the talent to deliver. |

its because our players have poor skills. and the sad thing is its guys like Andrew Walker (some of the worst disposal in the game) who are apparently the future of the club. Its no wonder Carlton is no better now than it was 3 years ago. |

The disturbing thing is that we turn the ball over when there is no pressure. Perhaps the first thing i would ban at training is the lob pass! |

It's confidence and belief in one self because Walker has a heap of talent and I think his self belief and confidence might be shot. ![]() For all the people who want to sink the boot into Walker's technique (Teague and Livo can barely kick fifty metres!), his kicking wasn't poor when he scooped the ball off the turf in his debut and had the poise to put it on his teammate's chest after resisting the urge to kick long to the square. Or when he snapped that impossible goal on his left over his shoulder against the Dogs in last year's Wizard Cup. The comments in this article about Brennan reminds me of how we're asking Walker to stimy his natural instincts to attack and play the team game as a defender. I think this hurts his decision making and he doesn't know whether to attack or defend his man in case it hurts us on the scoreboard. Percentages must add up for Brennan Quote: Here is Brennan's dilemma in a nutshell: the need to reconcile his ability to do the improbable with the team (and coach's) requirements to play the percentages, a contradiction that results in hesitation and poor decision-making. Not that he is discouraged from playing his natural game.
"One of the things that we try to do with younger players is get them to trust their instincts, and it's hard to know whether your instincts are going against the team philosophies,"said Lions' mental skills coach Phil Jauncey. "He's (Jared's) beginning to understand the basic skeleton of our team philosophies, so he can then use his natural flair at the same time, allow it to come out naturally." Walker's kicking wasn't this bad when he tore the Cats a new one in the VFL last year and he needs to be released to a wing for the sake of his career! We also need an assistant coach who had more ability by foot than Libba. Do we have a mental skills coach like Phil Jauncey at the club? We had that shrink at Carlton when we won every game bar 2. All the Lions kids are coming into the side and playing like they've been around for 2-3 years. ![]() Money talks! ![]() |

Agree that our poor execution and turn overs are bloody frustrating to watch. I think a lot of it is confidence. We know guys like Stevens, Houlihan and so on are good users of the ball, yet when they're making mistakes as well it's saying something. ![]() |

People forget to factor in how the target presents themselves to the kicker as well. Much easier to drop the pass into open space than hit someone lace out surrounded by opponents within a metre or two. |

Much easier to drop the pass into open space than hit someone lace out surrounded by opponents within a metre or two. Exactly. I was at the game today listening to 3AW. There was a moment in the third quarter where Blackwell was running up the wing being chased by Cooney, he looked up ahead and only player he had to kick to was Lance surrounded by two WB players. If he kicked it to Lance it was highly unlikely Lance would take the mark. So Blackwell kicked it a few meters before the contest to give Lance a chance to win it at ground level and pass it off to Blackwell running past. The commentators condemmed his kick as "shocking" and went on about it but personally I didn't think Blackwell had much choice. Skills will improve when our midfielders starting running for each other, getting into the right positions to recieve the ball giving teammates some real options when they have the ball. |

I think it's a combination of factors, a lack of pace, a lack of skill, players being forced to play out of position, a lack of depth and a lack of confidence generally in the side doesn't help. |
