I think I saw this thread topic on CSC or TBV a while back. Anyway it's such a good idea I don't think whoever would mind if we use it on TC in this of all weeks.

Anyway, mine would have to be this gem from Geoff McClure's Sporting Life bit in The Age, the Monday after the 99 Prelim. I'm pretty sure McClure is a Carlton supporter by the way.

CUT THROAT FINAL

To prove such tactics had a classic Sheedy ring about them, we need to turn the clock back seven days. The scene: a back street in East Melbourne not far from the MCG. The time: less than an hour after the Blues had defied the pundits by recovering from a 73-point mauling by Brisbane to beat a rampaging West Coast, thus setting up a grudge match between two of Melbourne's sworn football enemies. As former Blues 204-gamer Barry Armstrong walked from the MCG to his car his attention was grabbed by the sound of a horn from a passing car. Armstrong looked around only to see Sheedy's cheeky face, the Essendon* coach mischievously running his right index finger across his throat, no doubt suggesting such was the fate awaiting the Blues a week later. "Of course it got back to the club", a senior Carlton official told us yesterday. "All of this is Sheedy at his best, but it worked against him. This was no grand final victory, but the next best thing because, even if we don't win the flag, at least we have stopped Essendon* equalling our record 16 premierships".

Shame holding off the premiership record only lasted a year. :oops:

But I still get a kick out of meeting a Bumbers supporter and just saying "Nineteen-ninety-nine" to them. It never fails!

It would be nice to edge ahead of them and get #17 so that we at least have the sole premiership advantage over them. A few more would be nice too.

He's the classic snake oil salesman, absolutely full of shite!!

I loved it when we played them in 2001 on a cold April night and went into the game without Kouta, SOS, Bradles and another very big name IIRC.

We pantsed 'em and sheedy said those changers had thrown his entire strategy for defeating the Blues up the creek :o :o :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Yeah, Brett Backwell must have been really hard to match up on compared to Kouta :lol: :lol: :lol:

Actually, my favourite one was a non-Carlton one.

When North were facing up against Essendon* in 1998, when, in the lead-up to the match, he referred to North as marshmallows (there's a little contention as to whether he meant the players or the administration).

At the end of the match, convincingly won by North, Sheedy was pelted with marshmallows by the Kangas faithful.

Loved that.

Then there was the two Skinny moments … #1 taking MOTY in his debut match for us. #2 kicking 5 goals including a sublime kick off the ground from the Olympic Stand forward pocket.

I was at that game. Seeing the shoulders slump of the two Bomber players next to him at the time made me feel good inside.

Agreed Camelboy, but we still have sole bragging over the number of grand final wins. We have sixteen to the Bombers 14 as two of their premierships were in the period when they didn't have to play finals because the premiership was awarded to who ever finished top of the ladder.

Both matches in 2001.
Houla chainsaw in 2003.
Nailing them in the wet in 2004.
Winning by a kick in Round 2 last year after being down 28pts at 3/4 time.

Them paying for Justin Murphy, Matty Allan and Scott Camporeale to drop marks, set up clangers and wander round with their hands on their hips is nice...

nothing beats '99 - as everyone says - it didnt matter that we didnt win the flag, Essendon* fans were queuing up for GF tickets as soon as Rnd 22 finished - it wass great to see them all packing up, as we happily took up their places.
