Is this orchestrated or what???

Next we'll have Fitzy saying he wouldn;t stand in the way of Carlton paying out big contratcs....

or the big benefactor in the shadows...Blue throat....

I worry about the class of this club.... but then maybe it is just coincedence.

I understand the whole idea of using the media to drum up support but this is way too organised and regular to have been done by a Carlton person!

And Blue Throat it is! Or is it Blue Throats?

yep definitely not the board - perhaps the board in waiting...yep the blue throats who'll become the blue coats when they cut the throats of the present blue coats (who cut the throat of Collo while he was in his blue coatr) hey this is all very tumbling rome, fiddles and 'she burns! she burns!' stuff.

Lets look at all the MEDIA'S supposed candidates. Note - some poetic licence involved.

Sheldon - Hasn't coached for 10 yrs. Does that make him current?
SOS - Has done 5 hrs per week as assistant to the assistants assistant. Nothing more, nothing less.
Ratts - Short time at Melb then got out and quit coaching before returning to coach a 3rd Div side in the Eastern Suburbs.
Hickey - Coaching 'Up the Bush'.

Sorry but I'm simply not inspired. Atleast if the Club sees a need to change then lets look at some real options i.e guys that are coaching teams in the major competitions around Australia (and having success) or a full time assistant from another AFL club who has done more than two seasons moving the magnets or a recently retired player from not more than 2 years ago.

I'm not really a fan of recycling ex CFC players just for the sake of it. Real New blood or nothing IMHO.

Spot on Cazz hardly inspiring. Perhaps we're an easy target for budding coaches?

Absolutely correct.

Assuming he retires at the end of the year, I would love to see MICHAEL VOSS become an Assistant before any Carlton past player. Look at Voss's history and look back at his sensational career and you know he is the best in the business. Carlton should go all out and do everything it can to get him to the club. He should be our number target.

I am sure Denis would love to have him as an assistant as well.

Damn!! the article about me wanting to be an assistant coach for the Blues was due to appear in the HUN tomorrow.

M Voss would be fantastic - he demands RESPECT.

It will be extremely difficult to convince him to just pack up and head south to a rabble of a football club. The Lions would also be loath to lose him in any capacity.

Then there is the other issue concerning dollars.....he won't come cheap. As the saying goes, you pay peanuts you get ______.

We pay more then peanuts and we still get monkeys, couldn't see Voss heading to Carlton, has it too good up there and they will manage to slot him in (besides, he will probably play on?)

Penguin will try and control who is under him to alleviate any possible threats to his position.

Assistant coaches or other specialists can bring different things.

The skills that we need most are:
* the ability to develop youth generally, and particularly regarding kicking skills;
* tactical ability regarding games;
* cutting edge training and physical development knowledge.

Perhaps training issues should be left to a highly qualified physical trainer rather than have an ex-player try to assume the responsibility.

It is hard to say exactly what Libba and Trout bring to the table. You hear stuff about Libba training AW for kicking, and Eddie Betts for fitness over the off-season. He seems to have the ear of Pagan when they walk to huddles during games, so he seems to contribute to tactical decisions (though how effectively can be debated). You would hope that he has responsibility for tactical development of the midfield.

Daniher is probably not there for his match-day tactical knowledge. He is probably there to develop the skills of the talls, and his laid-back country-style demeanour and humour probably enables him to build relationships with the youngsters.

Trout is probably more of a personal assistant to Pagan.

So, what qualities are we looking for in an assistant coach?

SOS, that's the problem - we have a structure that doesn't seem to get the most out of the personnel at our disposal, regardless of whether or not we think they are the right people or not.

Let's list our priorities at the club:
1) Skills
2) Tactics and Team Development
3) Junior and Rookie Development
4) Specialist Coaches

Ideally, we need a head coach, two assistant coaches, a fitness/dietician guru, club psychologist, and some specialist coaches - these can be part-time.

At the moment, we have no coaches who is a designated skills coach, or if there is, the club hasn't told us. This is the area under which we desperately need help. The fact that they go hand in hand with junior and rookie development would show that ideally, if we were going to restructure the entire football department, then we'd want an assistant coach who can coach in the skills department as well being able to relate to the juniors and be tough on them but still be able to gain their respect. This is a tough gig and in a sense the most important one. A second assistant who could do the same role or be subordinate to this assistant would be necessary. The two would have to work well together, a group interview would be critical in the process of appointment (but that's too hard for CFC). Surely, Greg Lee with his Recruitment Agency would be able to give tips to HR on how to recruit people...

Our other problem is the role of the senior coach. What exactly are the roles for the senior coach? Obviously match-day is the big one, but also how much input should he have with the players? The leadership group amongst the players should work as one with the senior coach and assistants to implement the coaches' strategies and make sure that the rest of the team understands and listens to the instructions. The leadership group is the senior coach's biggest ally and when the rumours at Carlton are that some in the senior group don't respect the coach, then it is not surprising to see our performances falter.

That shows that the senior coach must be a people person, in addition to being a tactically brilliant match-day coach. He must be able to engender a spirit of respect for each other, a team ethic and be willing to spend time with his players getting to know them and also help them as they review their tapes etc. and communicate with his players regularly. There were rumours flying around that Denis barely speaks to his junior players - this is not acceptable if true.

The days of the coach who remains aloof are over. Players don't take that crap anymore. Little wonder Pagan is rumoured to have no respect amongst the players and I would not be surprised if it was confirmed.

all these guys were the ones who hated Denis and left because of his inability to coach and he made them retire
Agree with the other sentiments about assistant coaches

Voss is contracted until next year at least. Lions need to pay him over $1 million (their version of Kouta - wonky knees included).

Next season, the club must still endure some significant back-ended player contracts — Michael Voss, for example, will earn well over $1 million.

I reckon he is one player who may step straight into senior coaching without the usual apprenticeship as an assistant...at Brisbane only though...
