Well I asked the question in my avatar. Your thoughts? Methinks another player has been struck down joining the likes of Martyn, Mansfield, Johnson etc.

It was a great number. From 1934 to 1980, 6 players including four 100 gamers.

Since then Michael *shudder* Mansfield has been the only 50 game player out of eleven players.

Rod Waddell started the rot.

Perhaps he had a shocking last year caused by a hex placed on him for some reason?

Mangels' bio really needs some work - I don't recall ever hearing of him before and the likely hex that has caused concern for almost 30 years now. Pat?

I never really understood why Michael James didn't make it. I remember him having played well in 1990 (as backed up by the stats in the blueseum). Did he run into injury problems or something?

From memory he spent most of the next season on the injured list. Groin or hamstring. We lost he and Andrew Phillips around the same time, both looked promising.

Thanks for that Brad. By the way - the loss of Andrew Phillips was one of the greatest player tragedies (besides Motley) I've seen at Carlton. I don't think that even the loss of Whitehead robbed us as much as Phillips' loss. In fact, we had a poor run with our rovers - first Naley went home early, then Phillips had the career-ending injury, then Whitehead too.

I agree.

Am I right that Phillips had 40 possessions in one of his last games and a couple in the high 30's?

I thought he debuted in 91?

Or are you referring to reserves matches in 90?

Apols for being pedantic Molly :)

It just stuck in my mind because I knew someone who went to school with him.

I remember reading in a Blues News back then about how he went nuts in a school game and kicked 20 or 30 goals. And that he broke his dad's record at the school for number of goals in a game.

Wow. St Pat's in Ballarat it was.

Lest we forget Blues News eh.

I can still remember the one with Jeff Fenech on the cover giving a big thumbs down to a Carlton jumper - marketing at its finest!!

I was only thinking of the old Blues News this morning whilst looking at Carlton merchandise on the website. They used to have players modelling the garments.

Steven Edgar looks fetching in a Carlton bath robe.

Spot on. He was a huge loss, I remember people raving about him in the early days.

Oh and verbs, I remember that comment from the blues news!!! Wow, those were the days!!!

Hey that's a bit harsh!

Alan Mangels took a fantastic high mark once. Was it against Geelong?

No one has mentioned Brad Shine...

What a player..

Maybe next year we can recruit Courtney Johns and give him the number 10 guernsey?
