Post subject:  Mark Williams (the ex Carlton one)

Mark Williams, former blues battler of the 1980s #39 form memory???, has coached back to back in the VFL. Depending on where you stand this may indicate that coaching flags in the VFL is a soda or that this is a fair acheivement with a chance to add to it this year. Anyone know much about his coaching? Given the theory floated recently of Mitch being a low/no cost replacement for DP, who appears to be on real shaky ground with the Board, would Mark W be a chance to come to Carlton? Did he coach the Ants and was moved on to make way for Mitch? Could he be a handy assistant? Anyone know if he has been considered as an AFL assitant. I don't think he has a role at the Dees but several of their players have developed nicely through the VFL

He was coach of the Bullants before Mitchell and couldn't get along with Pagan.

Ross Lyon is a great mate of paul Roos.
I guess he jumped at the chance of working with him.
Regards Pedro.

He did not jump straight away. He was offered a longer term deal with Sydney but chose to accept a 1 year deal from Carlton in his last year at the Blues then he jumped.

Always thought Ross Lyon was a good operator and the time he has spent with the Swans would have made even better....maybe he might like a challenge and be prepared to come back as an assistant if we made a reasonable offer.....dont know enough about Williams MkII...heard him address the players at Sandy and he seems ok but doesnt seem to be seen as a coaching contender at senior level...

I remember Ross's work with I think it was young Waite back then and I just liked the way he spoke to the kid and to others. Quiet, forceful and articulate. Our loss I always thought.

Champion person is Mark Williams. 8)

Definitely had respect from players and did pretty well for the Bullants considering they were up against AFL players each week when they were a stand alone team.

I believe Mark Williams left because Carlton wanted more control of the development of younger players at the Bullants so a Carlton person was made coach (Mitchell). The issue back then was that the Bullant players were better than Carlton's VFL players and the Carlton players were not getting the development they needed. A lot of those old Bullants players who played before the Blueants now play in the GVFL or SANFL.

The dilemma for Mark Williams was, should he play his best 22 or play the kids for Carlton's sake?

If you want to get a name for yourself as a coach you need to play finals and win premierships. He made the right decision.
