Post subject:  Q: How the f@#* did we ever win the pre-season premiership?

Can anyone please explain how a team that collects so many wooden spoons can within the same time period come out and win a pre-season premiership (defeating the all mighty West Coast Eagles in the process)?

Fluke?
Reflection on how serious others teams take the comp?
True reflection of our form?
Tanking the rest of the time?
Coach lost players in season proper?

Please help me understand...

Combination of things

- the specific rules in that comp that discouraged flooding
- home final
- other teams not taking it seriously
- momentum from end of 2004
- new Fevola chant

... and probably a heap of other things, don't think it was any one thing in particular.

The amount of run we had from the backline. Don't under estimate how important Chambers was in the win. Kicking goals and providing a lot of the run.

I think that taxing style of play was probably never going to stand up in the H&A season and teams pretty much worked us out.

No team flooding our forward line

Then look at our forward line in Rd 1 that year
The Kangaroos 'worked us out'

Geelong won it also doesnt guarantee any thing. All it did was give us some money.

I still wonder myself............
A miracle so great, Disney should make a movie about it.
Remember Prenda's long goal and the hot night, for a few weeks in Feb 2005 we were back.
TBirds injury late on cost us the next week against North big time.

Still wouldn't change a thing, loved every moment of that Wiz Cup.

I think with the backline being stable without Lance back there really helped us up forward, Lance And Fev dominated that series.

We laid everything on the table and the other teams worked us out . Two years on there still working us out

Hard run, committment, high skill level, passion, everything we don't show now . After 10 wins the year before, and the the Wizzer, we had every right to expect something alot better, possibly finals, even if it was just 8th. While not every side takes ithe Pre-season Cup seriously, or may be at a different level of preparation, you still have to play damn good footy to win it. WCE, our Final opponents, had some huge wins through the series as well. Teams with bad lists, supposedly like ours, don't win it. If we were that bad we wouldn't get past the first round, even against teams that really couldn't have cared. Sadly Pagan lost the players, again, for the second time and our current plight is the result.

If you play well you can get around that. Working a team out is one thing, being good enough to carry it out is another. No excuse for winning just 7 games in 2 years since. Indicates alot more is wrong

George it's easy. Shortly after that Wizzer Cup win we extended Pagan's contract. The rest is history.

interesting question george.

Sure a number of clubs don't take it seriously but at least half do.
And historically sides in the Wiz GF have big seasons. Adelaide this year WCE last year. Geelong will be only the third finalist in a decade to miss the real finals (not absolutely sure of that but its close).

WCE would have been playing the GF to win.

In the season proper our Coaching Panel were out thought.

Still it is amazing that we went on to win the spoon. It is hard to believe that there wasn't some element of the coach losing the players involved. It was an unprecedented season for a Wiz winner - maybe we wanted another first -premiers and wooden spooners in same season (well second to achieve that after Fitzroy in 1917).

a conspiracist might suggest it was DP sorting his new contract before tanking for picks

Attacking style of play was a key factor. Just like we showed against Collingwood last week.

It's as if the coach says, "Just go for it fellas," and doesn't worry about any special game plan/strategies/flooding... That's when we're playing our best footy.

Run fast, tackle hard, take a risk or two, have CONFIDENCE in your teammates.

A mickey mouse comp yes, but we made sure we didn't play like Goofy.

We played with alot of confidence and attacked .. created etc...
Then we had no plan B..., when the other teams used a tactic like flooding....

Sounds like a lot of you are pointing the finger at Pagan.

i.e. In the Wizard Cup the team were encouraged, confident and hell bent on attack, but then when we went to a system where the players were berated and instructed to hold on for dear life with a defensive mind set manifested by way of flooding.

Let's sack the coach...
