Post subject: | The future |
This has been discussed before in previous threads but given our current plight financially the future of 10 clubs playing out of Victoria and the continuing trend of interstate clubs dominating should we look playing some games interstate in the future. I may dislike Kennett but the guy has done some great things at the helm at the Hawks and the deal to play more footy in Tassie is a financial windfall for the club. Why shouldnt the club look into the possibilitiy of playing maybe 3 games in the Newcastle area in the future. It is the last remaining area that could host an AfL club. It has a high population base and from all reports is becoming more popular AFL style. Sydneys success has opened the door for another NSW team. Some of us I am sure think because we are Carlton we dont have to worry about this but if we dont move with the times the results could be worse for the club long term so long as the games are on Telly and we get a deal where we play a certain number of games in Melbourne. The other thing the club should consider is dropping Carlton and just calling us the Blues. Some might just think this is a no no but hey we only train there now.Really IMO the suburb name has become redundant. What does Collingwood,Richmond StKilda mean anymore. The club has not being progressive enough in this area. If we dont move with the times the end result could be far worse. An appropriate post to start for the summer snooze period. |

i agree with what you say about selling home games interstate for now as we are in such a financial mess but you cant be serious about changing our name. if that happened i dont think i'd even barrack for a team anymore i'd probably just watch afl from a neutral view. |

Quite sober and drug free for a change. Even if we start winning games Even if The board is over thrown and Brown kicks in 700000 and Pratt's son throws in some more to get rid of the debt. In wont completely solve the problem about remaining viable in the future years. The idea of dropping the name Carlton and just calling us the Blues would possibly make the transition into the interstate market easier. And in relation to how I feel about the name since we have gone national and moved our home games from Carlton is when I think of Carlton Footy club I dont think of Lygon Street or Royal Parade. its natural that as the game has gone national the Carlton part has lost part of its meaning and signifigance to me.Thats my personal feeling. Its always part of our history butto me its not as important now than it was in 1972. King Andy wants the game to spread into all viable areas of Aus .The Hunter Valley is really the last area. It will happen in some capacity. That is for certain and it will mean more money because the AFL will support it. |

WHy do you think it is so stupid. Do you honestly think the club can survive in its current form. It cant in my opinion. You can disagree with me about dropping the name but we are [REDACTED] at the moment because not only does our club dont go with the times we dont think about the future. 9 clubs in Melbourne doesnt work Mjonc you see. The Kangaroos will become the Gold Coast team down the track. The Hawks have Tassie covered for the next 5 years.A study has been done and a third team has is viable in the West according to the report now. For whatever the reason, we at Carlton supporters and the board alike reckon we can survive in our current form because we are Carlton. This culture is the main reason that has got us in the shit in the first place. Sure we pick up good kids win more games more people will turn up. But long term that wont guarentee the Clubs economical future. It will become harder and harder as the competition further expands and the cost of running an AFL club increases. Why not go with it so we become stronger economically. If you think I am a tool fine. But at least back it up with some evidence. Jeff Kennett is on the money. 9 clubs in Melbourne wont work. 5 maybe 6 will. I believe Hawthorn are right in what they are doing. And they are in a lot healthier shape than we are. And why are they called Hawthorn now. They havent played there for 33 years they dont train there anymore. They still have a base in Melbourne but will get 20 million for playing interstate. My argument is the names of the suburbs are less relevant now than they were 30 years ago. My brother is a Doggie supporter. When the club got rid of the Footscray name he was a bit upset but now couldnt give a @#$%&!. Most doggie supporters are the same. Because Carlton dont embrace change very well we are in the predictament we are in. A new board ,new coach and dollars from Brown and Pratt IMO is only a short term fix. |

We are Carlton.... The most successfull team in the history of the AFL. If we sell a few home games to other states, we will be selling the clubs soul for a quick dollar... No quick fixes... |

Selling the name for the future? What do you estimate $ value that a name change will bring to the club? Your selling tradition, Bulldogs and Kangaroos have sold their tradition and still are welfare agents of the AFL. So again please enlighten me as to the $ value that changing our name will bring to the club? I follow Carlton, the Carlton that is based in the suburb Carlton, the Carlton that has such a strong Italian association, including Italy centric Lygon St which just so happens to be in Carlton. We have won 16 premierships as you guessed it Carlton. the famous catch cry of all supporters when referring to us is Caaaaaarrrlton. As Sticks told everyone at the B&F night, we are Carlton!!!! |

What do you want to call Victoria. She been dead a few years so our State name isn't very relevant is it. Maybe give it a nice Chinese name to increase its marketability offshore. Mate not a very sharp tool at that either |

apart from the competition for local advertising/sponsorship dollars how is less teams in melbourne going to help the situation?? will it mean that crowds for the remaining sides go through the roof? will it mean that there membership sales go through the roof? if carlton went interstate, would you go out and buy a collingwood or Essendon* membership? if carlton move, i will stop going to the football apart from the 6 or so times they play in melbourne. it is the mindset of invitation and embracement to fundemental change that will see clubs relocated or merged interstate. sounds great in theory. yes its terrific, the club will financially viable. can you see yourself being passionate about the newcastle blues?? given that i've barely missed a game in 21 years of carlton membership (since age 7) i would be disillusioned to the point of giving up on football. embrace change but not at the risk of ruining the carlton football club. |

The AFL won't let Carlton sell home games nor any other club. That now is policy. |
Author: | The_Cranium [ Sun Oct 01, 2006 4:15 pm ] |
Post subject: | |
the policy prevents them from selling their home game to an interstate teams home ground. eg. melbourne 'selling' their home game to brisbane at the gabba. they could however move their home game v brisbane to cararra or canberra or tasmania etc |

9 clubs in Melbourne wont work in the long run. Clubs have to find the dollars to remain an organisation like any club. Some people are in denial about how bad it is at Carlton at the moment. We are in debt to the tune of millions.Football at the highest level has changed enormously. How do 9 clubs work in Melbourne.2 clubs in Melbourne are being proactive. I would not think theAFL are going to be giving out loans to the Carlton Football club for ever. So whats the solution to the long term future of the club. If some are so certain we will play all home games in Melbourne how do we economically do that in say ten years time when we are in a lot of debt now .I dont Know how much we are in debt but its millions. How do we get rid of the debt ,then become economically viable again. Rather than just slag off give me some solutions. |
