Tonight, a committee of the Melbourne City Council approved $2 million each towards the redevelopment of Princes Park and Punt Road Oval.

Nice one MCC and good work Blueboys. I am sure work will start soon.

Maybe they literally mean Princes Park, and they'll just play some scratch matches on the parkland outside MC Hammer Oval....

Great stuff.

So now all the Club has to do is raise $2m and Smorgon recently put some $ into that... I wonder how close we are? Or are we already there?

It would be great PR to be able to start this - actually get something big up & running; new beginning - all that jazz

Sure is Molesy...it takes us out of the darkness of the last 5 years; the 5 year sentence is over? I think so.

Elite training facilities, a coat of paint, a squad of 30 kids, (9 top 20 draftees and 3 father sons), and another preseason under their belt, sounds good to me.

$2M from MCC
$500K from AFL
$? Victorian govt
$? Smorgon, benefactors...

This project shouldn't be costing the club much from their pocket.

Carlton....the place to be.

The Whitten Oval redevelopment has a figure of $20 million attached to it, with the MCC, State Governent, etc. contributions, I hope ours is a similar sized redevelopment (as I've seen the actual building plans for the Whitten Oval redevelopment and it's VERY impressive).

ours is 12mill brettie,

so I guess you can assume that it's going to be 60% as good as the doggies, but 40% better than the tigers.

I suspect the discrepency is in the amount of community-based development: the western oval will probably have a greater number of facilities for the local residents.

$15.7m for ours:

Size doesnt matter though surely. When you consider the whole of the Whitten Oval needs to be redone (and the surface is often brown and untrainable) its a question of what needs to be done, not how much $ you're spending.

Agreed Molsey - didn't know what the figure was for ours, plenty can and will be done with $15+ million as I daresay some of our current facilties may have been in a tad better condition than the John Gent Stand (Bulldogs main administration facility and only remaining grandstand).

I imagine most of the Western oval stands would be demolished where a couple of Carlton's would just need a face lift.

There's more federal votes to be won in the Western suburbs than there is in inner city Melbourne. ;)

Actually they're both incredibly safe Labour seats. Lindsay Tanner holds Melbourne. Nicola Roxon's in Gellibrand. Both have been ALP seats pretty much since they were formed.

I gather the missing $2m is that to be provided by the Club.

I wonder where the club would be at if we'd built this instead of the Legends Stand all those years ago.

Yup, of which the club has raised some funds, as mentioned when Smorgon donated some of his own cash earlier this year.

On a positive note, that's probably the best announcement I've read coming from the club, which is pleasing given my comments earlier in the week over Smorgon's speech.

They've set the bar at a reasonable standard, I hope that they keep all announcements at that level for the future.
