With the recent T-bird Saga i got thinking...we didn't read anywhere that Kouta or Lance went to Brett and told him to stay....we read it was Brendan Fevola! Now if you were to think about it....can you actually picture Lance doing it? Do you think this would have an impact on Brett? My answer...NO! Diametrrically opposite we find Fev! I can see him sitting with Brett and discussing it...telling him to stay pleading the case for the Navy Blue. This guy is the face of the club. He has a great connection with the younger brigade at the club. He can sell the club. And he doesn't put up with shit from the opposition! We know that if someone went after Gibbs next year, Brendan would be the first in there and Murph probably next!

Revamp the leadership structure! I want to see:
Captain: Fev
VC: Stevo and Lance
Deputies: Simmo, Murph

THat has to be our leadership group! I dont no if AW would want a role in there but if he did, i'd stick him in no second thoughts!

Forget this off field crap! Lets turn it around on the field! I want these guys leading the club into the future..and very soon add Gibbs to that group!

Well done to Fev if he was the catalyst .. but we must remember that Fev spoke out against the club when he talked about Thornton's contract recently. He has to be more diplomatic than that.

yeah i heard about that aswell, Fev should be made captain. He has an influence on his team mates and people respect and look up to him. He i sthe face of the club and no one loves the club more than Fev. His the first person to fly the flag especially with the younger blokes. He is the face of the club and he is our best player so should be captain.

I think Fev would be best in a vice captain position rather than captain-he would then be freer to be himself and still play a leadership role-and allow someone with a cooler wiser head to do the diplomacy/people handling/media communications that an AFL captain invariably has.

1 year too early IMO.

If he keeps his form up, maybe 2008.

Fev for captain is another piece of the puzzle.

The time is now for Fev I reckon - Whitnall's time has passed for mine. We should have made him Captain when we made Kouta captain IMO.

Keep up the good news - make Fev captain and GET GIBBS :-D

Fev did tell T-Bird and Russell to stay- but just because we didn't see Kouta or Lance in the media telling them, we can't assume they didn't tell them to stay.

Fev is great publicity, but I still believe Lance has more leadership material- on the field and off the field, as he seems more level-headed. I would give the vice-captaincy to Fev, but I think Lance will and should get the top job. The captain isn't necessarily the best or most popular player.

Ok Im happy to be shot down in flames here(if ive been lied to) but apparently Fev is up at the Gold Coast at the moment.

I have a very very good mate whose God Father is Ted Whitten, ted and his ol man were best mates and I so no reason for Teddy(yes named after Ted) to lie to me.

Fev was having a drink last nite (no he wasnt unruly and I hope it was Alex who was with him) and apparently he "Loves Carlton" :P .

Thats all, though you would all like some positive news.

PS pretty sure its the GC cause that where my mate is today (could be Echuca yesterday but im pretty sure Ted's been there for a few days.

He is definitely on the Gold coast since Thursday I think. Thornton's been in Fiji all week I believe.

I have never been in favour of Fev being captain, however I have been very impressed of late with his desire to get out there and give things a go.

I am talking about running in the Grand final sprint and putting his hand up to tour Ireland. I mean how many top players run in the Gf sprint. It's a good sign of a guy who is enjoying his footy and is proud to wear the CFC.

That said, i don't think he's captaincy material. He's still prone to the odd sulk on field, and given his great form this year, why risk it by loading the extra pressure on him.

The problem is we don't have a really obvious alternative.

Lance for the next year or two, then joint captains Murphy and Gibbs for the ten years after - I'd like to see that.

Does anyone get the feeling that Whitnall is preferred but they're waiting to see how he comes back from the 2 months off?

A comment was made to me that in 2-3 years the likes of Murphy may be ideal as a Captain. Whitnall could hand-over at that point (if appointed). Fev would still be a big player and wouldn't necessarily hand it over at that stage. So it seems like 2 ideas are being considered:

- Fev
- Whitnall with handover to Murphy in Year X.

I still vote Fev. Kids love him, sponsors love him, and his public work isgetting much better. And who better to inspire the boys with a 60 metre goal? Unless Whitnall is moved back up forward its going to be hard for him to inspire anyone IMHO - I think his quieter H2 2006 had more to do with other Clubs working out how to play him rather than the rumoured fitness issues.

All this talk of Fev having sat down and had lunch with Thornton...

Thorton has been in Fiji through all of this, and according to his manager, is still there.

Fev has been in Australia, pushing his case for an irish adventure. First in Melbourne, and now, from all reports, on the Gold Coast.

So might we conclude that this supposed lunch between Fev and Thornton is a false rumour?

For what it's worth, while Fev's efforts and attitudes havebeen great for the last 9 months, 9 months of good behaviour after 6 years of petulance (and there was still some petulance this year...remember the Hwathorn game) does not warrent the reward of the Captaincy. Gotta do it for longer than that.

But it's the new Fev that is fresh in everyone's mind.aaand the public admire the new Fev, and his ability to turn things around.

So highly regarded is Fev, that Tarrant called him for advice.

IMO it's Whitnall's turn to captain the club, but I also don't believe that it's about whose turn it is, but rather who will do the job the best.

Lets see how Whitnall shapes up for preseason training.

Getting the leadership group right is more important than the captaincy right now.

I'd like to see the hard working, superfit Walker in that group. I think it would do his confidence and self esteem a world of good, and in turn, for Carlton too.

Senior Leaders: Fev, Whitnall and Stevens
Rising star leaders: Simmo, Walker and Waite.
Veteran leaders: Lappin and Kouta as mentors.
Supplementary leaders to be considered: Thornton and Murphy.

Only because Fev was the only one of the idiots who'd got himself into a mess, who'd managed to get himself out of it. Tarrant wanted to know how to do it.

But 9 months does not maketh the man.

Agree Siegried. Fev has taken steps forward but still has some to go. To his credit he siad a few weeks back that whoever it was would be just warming the seat for Murph.

Good list BB but Waite would need to do a whole lot more with his talent to qualify for a leadership role

Yep Gerry...the wisest thing Fev has ever said. In fact, that comment was, to me, the biggest sign of his improving maturity yet.
