Post subject:  A question regarding Jordan Russell... (and Port..)

Just wondering, during trade week - did Port make an offer for Russell and if so, what was the offer? Because to be honest, I didn't hear a skerrick regarding him and any potential trade - so did we hold firm from the get-go?! Did they offer a matchbox car and a club sandwich!? What exactly happened??

To further that, if we were to offload him, you would have wanted a decent trade - the last thing we want now is a yet-to-be-developed player nominating for the PSD and us losing him - or worse - to give up pick 1 to retain him...

They offered a third round pick. We told them them to stick it.

In another paper Grant Williams is quoted as saying they only offered a player (who was un-named) so who knows. Regardless it was a pathetic offer.

JR will be good for CFC in years to come and I'm glad he is staying.

Cazz, why are glad he is staying? What do you see in the kid that I don't?

...a third round pick, a club sandwich - AND Chad Cornes... and maybe we'd be talkin... :P

Give the bugger a year or two, and maybe we might just have a gun on our hands?

Not picking on you exclusively Hotel but...

resign = quit
re-sign = stay

You meant the second one, right?

I normally don't care about typos, but this one creates much confusion for simpletons like me :-D :-D

I'm not Cazz. But I'll tell you why I think it's way too early to give up on him. He's a terrific size for a running player. He's got a good motor and he's very quick. He's got good skills. He's willing to tackle and chase. And he's meant to have a good attitude.

He's exactly the kind of player you need in the 'modern' game. Runs hard (both ways). Runs quick. Doesn't turn it over.

Of course he has some deficiencies, and he may not make it. But we'd be stupid not to give him another couple of years. And we'd be stupid to give him away for nothing.

I agree. It is way to early to make an assessment on Russell. He was just starting the make his mark late in the season. He was dominating the Bullants and just starting to show signs for the Blues.

The kids don't get an easy transition into the seniors with Pagan - they have to fight tooth and nail for every second of ground time they get - just ask Simmo how hard it is (and be amazed at how Murph commanded the ground time he did).

Young kids at other clubs get a much easier transition in winning teams with relatively less demanding requirements I reckon - so you could understand how Jordan thought he'd like to try elsewhere.

However, someone needs to point out to him (and those who might write him off at this stage of his career) the way the careers of Simpson and Walker have taken off after periods of being in and out of favour under Pagan.

Remember Walker spent most of the end 2005 in the Ants, while Simpson only really became an automatic inclusion in the side around the same time.

Just because you are a first round draft pick doesn't mean you will be an instant star.

I doubt Russell will be a superstar like Murph or Tex, but I think he has the potential to be a real workhorse type like a Scotty Burns who will get in there and get it done with a minimum of flash or fuss.

We need those types as much as we need the superstars.

I hope the optimism some feel about Jordan's re-signing comes to fruition. I do not understand why some are so hard on him. Everytime I see him with the footy, he looks composed, standing upright with his eyes focused down the field looking for options, and unlike others on our list, he usually chooses the right one.

In my view, when a guy like Jordan is your 15th best player or so (and has a 100 games under his belt) that's when you know you're ready to contend. With respect to blokes like Carrazzo (and to a lesser extent Bentick), they really lack the polish to elevate the team to the next level. I see them more as filler for this interim period until (hopefully) we become good again. I don't see Jordan the same way. I think there's a lot to like about him. And he has something we desperately need and that's pace.

Someone at the Club needs to make more of a conserted effort to make him feel like he belongs -- not only at the Club but also in Melbourne. Also, I hope the fact that the Club acted reasonably in trying to do a deal with Port means that there is still a lot of goodwill between the parties!

I will be gutted if we lose him because it also means that effectively we didn't have a first round pick in 2002, 2003 and 2004 which further exacerbates the impact of the draft penalities.

Huddo on SEN said they offered a choice of players but refused to offer picks.....they were using Russell to offload some of their garbage with the threat of taking him in the PSD if we didnt bend over.
We did the right thing and said No...

Saturday Age said it was Pick 39 but SEN was all about an unnamed player, as per Elwood's post. That player was probably delisted yesterday...

Russell is worth more than Pick 39 even if he didnt play 11 games given where he was drafted. Port could have got him for 23 but are trying this PSD angle. Signing Thornton up changes all that so I'd be pretty confident that he'll sign.

The CLub has appeared confident the whole way through that he would re-sign.

Forget about the turmoil if you can. Keeping 2 of our good young sub-22 year olds can only be good news going into 2007. The only way a Club should release such a player is if someone wants to pay over the odds for them for whatever reason. As we have seen neither Port or the Hawks would do so in a trading sense.

What has to be remembered about JR is acutally how young he is. He only turns 20 in November this year. He came to CFC as a bottom age player and it is generally thought that the average SA kids can be 6 months behind in their developement compared to the TAC kids when they are drafted.

In SA each team has a U17, U19, Res and Senior team. I have been told by those with experience that the SA Under Age comps aren't as intense and as professionally structured (Training wise and game intensity) as the TAC Comp. Their general style of football is less physical.

This is evident in the way Vic Metro Selectors always pick the strong bodied TAC kids who out muscle and out aggress the interstate teams each year.

So if you take into consideration that:-

A) CFC took a light, shy and quiet kid away from home at a young age
B) Put him in a new city that he had to adjust to away from his parents, friends and girlfriend.
C) Plus his general football developement at the time......

I think JR is still 12 months behind the average Victoria kid of his age.
He has the skills and work ethic, now he just has to take a few more steps ala Simmo and he will be good to go.

Interesting Cazz. Even his physical development 06 to 05 was very impressive - he grew arms!

I think he has all the attributes to make it - great pace, great build and good size for a variety of opponents. He's a pretty introspective kid who hurts from his mistakes so maybe when he gets his confidence up things'll change a little for him.

If that's the case, how good is '35-possessions-6-goals-in-the-seniors Gibbs' going to be in 6 months time???
